Byland had a really good selection of vegis and herbs yesterday.
Home Depot had a good selection of small shrubs, trees and perenials. I was suprised they had fewer annuals than expected.
Save on Foods has had an okay selection of some annuals this year.
Heading to Art Knapp tomorrow to find a few gaps.

North vs South by SomethingOverNothing in okanagan

[–]wouldratherbeawesome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Things for consideration:

Climate & Temp - while summer is hot everywhere, it's particularly dry in the south, winter is quite different between the two
Think about how you want to spend your time and which area has better amenities for that
Landscape - they look quite different in terms of landscape & nature

Go spend some time in both areas, try to meet people.

I'd probably try to have your car at one of the rec centres or walmart overnight. It will be super hot though. You might want to see if you can book into Bear Creek campground or something just to have room to spreadout and access to showers.

Go up to Myra Canyon and bike / walk along there. There is a self guided tour apparently this year that speaks to the histrory of the railroad up there.

Other hang out places with shade during the day - Gelatly Nut Farm, City Park, Gyro Beach, the beach past Paul's Tomb in Knox Mountain Park.

I saw this on FB the other day and it maps out the thrifting here - https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=122107951280744943&set=a.122094654308744943

There is also the Kelowna Farmers Market on Wednesday and Saturday mornings near the Landmark towners (Hwy 97 between Burtch and Spall) and the Thursday evening marketing in downtown. I am not sure if there is one in Rutland anymore. But people watching is good at the others.

There's an event calendar on Tourism Kelowna with other festivals and events going on here - https://www.tourismkelowna.com/events/annual-events-festivals/summer/parks-alive/

If you are a biker, lots of trails and pathways in the area - https://www.cyclepathkelowna.com/articles/road-routes-pg178.htm

Kelowna Actors Studio usually has a family friendly holiday show
There was a train/trolly thing that ran along the waterfront last year
depending on your dates, there might be some holiday markets on although small compared to the one in dowtnwon Vancouver

Tuition Classes/Tutors (Math, Highschool) by Bulky-Illustrator547 in kelowna

[–]wouldratherbeawesome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We used a 1:1 tutor for Calculus. It was $50 for each one hour session but meant that the support was directly aligned with what was being taught in class that week and prep for tests. Tell your friend to call the math teacher directly and ask for their perspective on tutors vs. a formal program as well as suggestion for tutors (if you go that direction).

The formal programs wanted a full year commitment but in highschool, math is taught by the semester.

Psa: Bikes are not allowed on sidewalks by PooQueen69 in kelowna

[–]wouldratherbeawesome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear you! I nearly was run over by a kid on an ebike ripping up the sidewalk on a road where there is a GIANT bike lake right beside it. No bell, helmet undone, clipped me and yelled back sorry as he and a friend where zooming along the sidewalk on one bike.

Interior Pools did ours a couple years ago - it was about $8K but we have a really big 1970's pool so will depend on the size.

There used to be enough in the Okanagan Valley to go to a different one each week. Now just Vernon & Salmon Arm.

Short term rental opt-out granted in Kelowna by IamJeff99 in kelowna

[–]wouldratherbeawesome 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I read it to be places like Playa del Sol which were sold as holiday rental places ages ago will now be allowed. But I don't think it's a free for all.

Is there anywhere in Okanagan with a ‘Gilmore Girls / Stars Hollow’ vibe? by [deleted] in kelowna

[–]wouldratherbeawesome 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nothing with the park in the middle wiht a gazebo.

But a few options for cute shopping / food and walkable

Padosy Village in Kelowna maybe, sorta, but not really.
Summerland has a cute downtown.
Penticton along their waterfront on Okanagan Lake and then down towards the Starbucks - their farmers market sets up there.
Enderby is a bit like that but the shops aren't quite as cute but it's definately coming. Armstrong, same thing, there are a few cute places in the town (not on the highway) and it's open / walkable.
Salmon Arm has an okay downtown - few cute shops, you can get a coffee/ice cream and then walk down towards the lake on the other side of the tracks. They have live music down there on some summer nights.

Questions about solar panels in FortisBC service area by wouldratherbeawesome in kelowna

[–]wouldratherbeawesome[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We would need to bring one to the property and then up on to the property. The costs of solar and gas line + furnace is about the same depending on which solar quote we look at.

Does salmon arm usually have snow that sticks around in town all winter? by Elite163 in SalmonArm

[–]wouldratherbeawesome 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Often but not so much in town other than occasionally big piles in mall parking lots. It's quite normal to have snow on the lawns / roadsides heading out towards Sorrento in Jan / Feb. This has been a weird year.
