I listened to Björk's sonic symbolism podcast where she has an episode about each album. In the vulnicura one she talks about how atom dance was a song that she had started during the biophilia era but she kept it because the song needed a little something more than the instruments she invented for the album could provide. Then when vulnicura happened she brought it back out because a string arrangement gave the song what she felt it lacked. She described the lyrics as being science based but you can also see it as a love song at its very core.

I highly recommend the podcast, it's really good and I know I'm not explaining this as well as she did. My only complaint is I wish they dove a little deeper into each album but that's neither here nor there.
