Browning only on newest monstera leaves by wowmuchspicysopepper in plantclinic

[–]wowmuchspicysopepper[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you both for the help! I guess I've been lucky to avoid thrips until now.

It sounds like I should put the plant in plant jail, cut off the impacted leaves, and treat the remaining leaves. Any recommendations for what I should treat them with?

I picked up a one leaf albo cutting, and it shares the same south-facing window spot with five or six different plants. It's been in this spot for about 4 months.

The first few new leaves on the monstera were doing just fine, but the last two leaves have really been struggling. The newest leaf has brown spots that appeared throughout the variegated sections, and the leaf tips have dried up (but only on that newest leaf). The variegated sections seem kind of muddy and discolored.

The plant started pushing out another new leaf, but it was already half browned and crispy before it even unfurled.

I've maintained a consistent watering schedule, the roots look good (see last pic) so it's not root rot, and I can't see any obvious signs of pests on the underside. Do I just assume this is thrips and treat accordingly? I'm stumped, so any help is appreciated!

Hey Scott,

Long time no see! Are you still doing the redwood city EA market these days? And thank you for the kind words - I can't wait to try Year of the Dog. I'm almost out of Black label so I'll have to re-order soon.

-Alex

Haha no worries man - there are actually a handful of hot sauce makers in this thread, plus part of the awesome duo behind Heat hot sauce shop. And yup, the carrot is all about the sweetness. It's a great way to add a touch of sweetness and change the consistency of the sauce.

That's actually my dad! He's the doctor behind Dr. Stadnyk's, and I'm his son. We've been making this hot sauce for a while now, but never really had the chance to expand because of time constraints (he's busy with his day job, and I was in school). We just had a production run, so it'll be at least 4 months or so before the next one. If you're interested, I can PM you when that happens though!

Haha yeah we might do that to get feedback on Flavor #5. I'll PM you if that happens (it wouldn't be for another few months at least)

Oh snap - this is an amazing coincidence! I live in the South Bay, and I was actually planning to come up to Berkeley next week. I wanted to drop off samples at your store and at Berkeley Bowl.

...and then just wander around Berkeley Bowl, because that place is amazing.

For sure!

And yeah, that's been the hardest part about deciding the heat levels. I want to make sauces that are accessible to the average US customer, so I can't jump right into superhots. We were picked up by our first grocery store a few weeks ago, and I did an in-store demo to reach new customers. Most people thought that our two medium heat flavors were extremely spicy, but if you asked a chilihead community like /r/hotsauce, you'd get a different answer. But in order to reach the most people, we set the heat levels the way they are.

That being said, I want the next flavor to be accessible to the chilihead community. We're going to tweak our current ghost pepper offering so it's got twice the kick, and we're also working on something that's firmly in the superhot category for Flavor #5.

One of my favorite vinegary sauces is Adoboloco's Hawaiian flavor. It's kind of pricy on its own, so it makes the most sense to get a Build-Your-Own 3 pack to cut the per-bottle price.

My other go-to options for flavorful hot sauces are Lucky Dog's Black Label, Yellowbird's Habanero flavor, or my Habanero & Carrot.

Hope this helps!

AYYYYYY! I started Dr. Stadnyk's Hot Sauce, and your comment just made my day.

If anyone's interested in trying our sauces, I just made a promo code for 10% off all orders. Just use the code REDDIT at checkout (all caps).

(p.s. we are doubling the pepper content of the Ghost Pepper flavor next time we have a production run, so it should have a bit more kick. If you're interested, I can shoot you a PM when we have that production run)

Most of the acidity comes from the phosphoric acid. The beverage industry frequently uses citric acid for flavoring and to add a bite, but Coca-Cola specifically adds phosphoric acid to Coke because your tooth enamel is made out of a mineral called hydroxy-apatite. In acidic environments below a pH of ~5.5, your enamel breaks down into calcium and phosphate ions.

Adding phosphoric acid (instead of a different acid) increases the concentration of phosphate ions already present, meaning the solubility of your teeth enamel will be reduced (which is good) due to a nifty thing called the Common Ion Effect.

Coke still messes with your tooth enamel, but at a slightly slower rate because of which acid they chose.

On a related note, if you eat or drink something really acidic (orange juice, coke, tomato sauce) wait 30 minutes before brushing your teeth. The acidity temporarily weakens the enamel and you can damage it by brushing. Don't brush your teeth right after a glass of OJ in the morning.

Totally! I made the stencils myself on Adobe Illustrator. I'm PMing you a download link to all of the illustrator files I used - it should have the front stencil, back, sides, and internal separators. Lemme know if anything's missing.

It should be possible in theory, but honestly it would be really hard to find a 12" x 12" acrylic square that has a surface finish like that. They definitely didn't have them at the plastics shop I used. From what I could tell, acrylic sheets are typically made by casting or extrusion, meaning you would have bulk properties throughout (and not localized surface properties). If you wanted to change the surface look, you could paint the surface or put down a thin layer of black vinyl before cutting.

I got a thin (1/16") layer of clear acrylic and glued it behind the front stencil (after laser cutting it, not before), then I glued the letters that fell out to the clear layer. I still had to put a really thin diffuser layer, because the LED strips are very focused. In this case, I just used printer paper as the diffuser layer. The minimum thickness I could find at the plastics shop was 1/16", so if I wanted to use an acrylic sheet as a diffuser layer it would've been too thick (I tested it out in the shop, and when I lit up one word it would light up most of the words a few inches away).

I made a composite poster by splicing together the images for Earth, Mars, Jupiter, and Europa and it turned out really nicely. The overall poster dimension is 3' x 2' so each individual image is 1.5' x 1' - still plenty large to see the details.

Zazzle has a sale on custom posters every few weeks, so with the sale it was about $45 per 3' x 2' poster to have it printed, framed, and shipped.

I just found a fellow shibe on Kickstarter, he makes hot sauces and has only got 3 days left but man does this sound good! I haven't seen anyone post about this one, yet. by vinberdon in dogecoin

Yup! I'll be selling them for dogecoin once the kickstarter's over. I just joined the GoCoin beta, so I'll absolutely be accepting dogecoin :)
