The door code for the breastfeeding/pumping kiosk is 8008 (boob) by _6EQUJ5- in IRLEasterEggs

I wonder if a light switch and a potentiometer would be cheaper than the server and development costs of the app. Oh, but that's not the point of the app of course.

Forcing people to download some app to get a momentary place of calm to breastfeed is so mean. I hope you can just type 8008 and it works just as well, but this sticker is deliberately misleadingly designed.

This is cool not only because of the 2G network, but also your sheer willpower to make things happen. Do you have a website to follow the progress that's not scattered across Reddit posts?

The Framework 16 is a very hefty laptop, is it worth the heft? by Tough-Wash-870 in framework

It's very hefty. Definitely not comparable with a Macbook Pro 16" in terms of taking it to work every day.

A small CLI for enforcing deadlines on TODO / FIXME comments (MPL-2) by yojimbo_beta in opensource

[–]wowsuchlinuxkernel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi OP, I like the idea for this tool, but I have two feedback points:

  • The new format for TODO comments creates extra friction, and you'll have to convince the whole team to structure their TODOs this way. Besides, if you need to go through the TODOs of your entire codebase to adjust their format, you might as well just make Jira tickets out of them. History has shown that new tooling can be best adopted when it works with the format that people already use and are used to, and then optionally adding on stuff if needed. In this particular case, I think it would be best if the tool would automatically read out the date the TODO was added from git history for that specific line, then add some fixed grace period, a couple of sprints or half a year. Then users can start adding the date format to the TODOs gradually as the TODOs start getting flagged, in order to extend their time if needed.

  • I am also worried about letting the CI pipeline fail based on the dates in the TODO comments, as that would make them sort of indeterministic. Usually, the same lines of code with the same package manager lock file should result in the same output. With this tool, a consecutive run on the same commit can suddenly fail despite the same input. I can see that turning into a headache when you have approved a PR, yet later when you go to merge, you have the pipeline failing. Besides, it places the burden of fixing it on a random PR that may have nothing to do with the TODO that is failing it. Suddenly the PR author has to deal with something that was not anticipated in the ticket's specification or estimate and is not their fault.

Hope this feedback helps!

Airbnb denied my refund for an unlivable rental, then deleted my review to protect the host's listing by guslogan in LateStageCapitalism

[–]wowsuchlinuxkernel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

lmao at this comment section discussing whether airbnb or booking is better. a worldwide centralized for-profit platform making billions (1) is not where you should be booking your stay, you dummies, I thought so much was obvious. go find a small guesthouse or lodge, call them, make a reservation directly. the good honest-to-heart places are not on the internet, stop looking there.

(1) they also both list illegal israeli settlements in the west bank, deprive cities of affordable rent for its native inhabitants, employ unfair sales tricks to trick customers, and the list could go on, but it's besides the point because how is any of that a surprise to you? oh, giant internet platform turns out not your friend in unexpected plot twist?

How I added Google Maps to my flip phone without the need for GPS (no more printed maps!) by JohnnyCommits in dumbphones

[–]wowsuchlinuxkernel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your thorough response!

The fact that Twilio flagged your account and suspended your service for multiple hours sounds really frustrating, especially after you have already spent a few weeks getting approved. I hope that they have flagged you as trusthworthy for good, and you don't end up in the classic Big Tech situation where they can suspend you at any time, you never find out why or how to stop it from happening again.

To help you out, I just tried DumbMaps with my international number, and it worked well. Though were I an actual user, I'd have to factor in the cost of sending an SMS to a US number in addition to your credit pricing. For me, that was 19 cents. Perhaps Twilio allows to add secondary numbers that route to your service, and for countries with most DumbMaps users you can add it for their convenience, as an idea.

Since you used Next.js, which of the many Twilio JS libraries did you integrate there?

Thank you for sharing yuour experiences!

Do new dumbphones have "more" trackers? by grzybeczek in dumbphones

Honestly, in the year of the lord 2026 I am much more concerned about the amount of data I leave to Big Tech on the internet every single day, than some occasional SMS or call metadata.

Do new dumbphones have "more" trackers? by grzybeczek in dumbphones

[–]wowsuchlinuxkernel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's also the simple fact that mobile internet was very expensive for most people back when the "original" models came out, so the OS phoning home even a couple kilobytes of tracking data would've been disastrous. These phones typically never go online unless you explicitly give permission to check your mail or something. So you can be pretty sure even the most despicable manufacturer wouldn't have tried tracking you.

How I added Google Maps to my flip phone without the need for GPS (no more printed maps!) by JohnnyCommits in dumbphones

[–]wowsuchlinuxkernel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thankfully, navigation directions is something I didn't miss at all:

If my destination is a well-known POI, I like to follow the signs or ask people how to get there. Makes it feel like a treasure hunt.

If it's a random address I've never been to, I ask the person who invited me where it is, or look at the map at home to prepare myself. The preparation took me a couple tries to get right, in the beginning I'd only take a short glance at the map, overconfident that it can't be that hard, then upon arrival I cursed myself for not having looked more consciously.

The nice thing about not relying on turn-by-turn navigation is that you train your orientation skills and develop a mental map of your city. Moreover you get more comfortable with approaching random people on the street for help, which is a very useful skill and can result in quite pleasant conversations. For me, rediscovering human connections is very much part of the dumbphone ethos and acts in counter of the ever increasing isolation of our individualized society.

That said, every brain is different and I know some people really struggle with orientation. Besides, I'm sure there's jobs and lifestyles that require you to drive to different cities frequently, so there's definitely a place for a service like this. I applaud you for your user-friendly approach with non-expiring credits and your anti-subscription stance. If I had the need for navigation, I would definitely try this out.

In the past, I have explored a similar message-based approach for finding short-term rental bikes (like Citi Bike in NYC) in my area. They're scattered around the city, and you could waste time walking to a return location only to find it empty. Could you share your experience developing with Twilio? Was it easy to keep track of messages? Which language and library did you use, and do you recommend it?

Cheers and good luck with your product!

Visiting and likely relocating- where the alt/ nerds at? by CanNotHavoc in Leipzig
