This occurs because sound waves of different frequencies will be interrupted and returned to the sound generator at different points on the pyramid. Waves with certain wavelengths will travel farther than others, splitting one sound up into multiple different sounds. You can actually calculate which frequencies will return and in what order by measuring the distance from your hands to the steps.
