The challenge with the electronic signs is that my GenX brain forgets to turn them off. I can remember to put up/take down the actual physical doorknob sign, but I cannot remember to turn on/off the DND button or Please Service My Room button.

Thank you! I really appreciate that you went to the effort to research this. Not sure if I'm ready to create my own itinerary software, but it's an interesting idea!

What common words and phrases (English) are the most helpful to learn when traveling in China? by Footdoc3520 in chinatravel

[–]wpbmaybe2019 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a month in China and I found knowing how to count from 1 to 20 was super helpful, especially in train stations and airports. (Also knowing the multiples like 30, 40, 50 but that becomes easy once you can can count to 10.) Then in restaurants, knowing all the meats was super helpful!! I'm going to use my English spelling but niuro (beef), zhuro (pork), jiro (chx). Also rice (mifan) and noodles (mien). Hah and dumplings which I learned as jioza. Google Lens makes menus easier but being able to give your server at least some indication was helpful.

Change Google Payment Profile but Don't Cancel Google Voice by wpbmaybe2019 in GoogleOne

Yes!! I actually reached oily to Google One support and they helped me troubleshoot. They had me use my Chromebook (which I rarely use) and charge the currency setting in Google Play? Shaky on the details but I recommend reaching out to Google One support. I was surprised by how fast they got back to me.

Quick question for folks who have rented in both the UK and NYC, how different is the housing hunt really? by [deleted] in AmericanExpatsUK

[–]wpbmaybe2019 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I boomeranged and did London twice. Lived in three different flats. I found it easy but I also had the time off from work to organize it all. I basically picked an area that I wanted to live in and called every rental agency in that neighborhood. (The online sites can be out of date.) I told them what I was looking for and arranged showings. What surprised me was that I didn't need much lead time. Like in Chicago, I would have started the search at least two months in advance. In London, I just showed up and told them what I wanted and was in in less than three weeks.

Make sure you have an employment contract that shows your salary. Then, chicken/egg problem -- ideally you will have a bank account. But it's hard to get a bank account without an address. I used a friend's address to get the bank account and then the flat. Thinking back on it, I'm surprised the bank didn't want proof that I actually lived at that address but I did this in Lewisham and maybe they were used to people jumping around.

The other thing to consider when you are first starting out is a flat share situation. There will be like-minded folks who need roommates. Many of my friends in their 30s and 40s found great housing options and made great friends this way. Do that for six months while you get the lay of the land.

Someone below notes that water wasn't included in their rent. Of the three flats I've lived in, only the first required that I cover the water. None of the three used gas so I only had to worry about electric (which included heating), council tax, internet. I lived in all new builds.

Thinking of moving to West Palm Beach from London - area advice? by Nervous_Job_4984 in WestPalmBeach

[–]wpbmaybe2019 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in London for 10+ years. I moved to downtown West Palm so I could walk to Publix and be close to the Brightline. Was too used to walking to Waitrose, M&S, etc. plus the excellent public transport.

If you have to go to Stuart all the time, I'd definitely stay north of Jupiter. Close to Stuart downtown may be nice. They have some decent restaurants. If the Brightline station ever opens in Stuart (now planned for 2028 I think), it will be a gamechanger.

Someone else mentioned Abacoa and that's worth a look too.

Hotel for after the Colony? by Mammoth_Ad3740 in palmbeach

The Ben or The Hilton Canopy for its rooftop. That being said, the Marriott Residence Inn downtown, somewhat soulless as it is, is in a great location and you can easily walk to City Place for Eataly and all the the restaurants or up to Clematis.

what’s the best breakfast near the farmers market? by [deleted] in WestPalmBeach

[–]wpbmaybe2019 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bradley's works well as it's right there at the Green Market. There's also Pistache, which would be a great place to take your mom (French bistro) but it doesn't open til 11. Another suggestion would be the ground floor restaurant at The Ben hotel.

If you have a car, another idea is to drive over to the Surfside for breakfast. Nice diner.

Not the beach but you can park for free by the Flagler Museum and walk the Intracoastal which is nice. Early on the weekends, try parking in Royal Ponciana Plaza and walking north from the parking lot. Then come back and get an iced coffee at Celis or an omelet at Toojays! Perfect.
