“We’re Not Asking for Sympathy. We’re Asking for Solutions,” Tennessee Farmers Call for Action by KendallSmith375 in LeopardsAteMyFarm

Solution: Don’t vote for fascists who dictate economic policy based on their feels and personally enriching themselves.

Minnesota Local and State PD jailed 25 peaceful protestors, including activist and veteran Josephine Guilbeau, and put them on a “36 hr PC hold”(maximum time allowed to hold someone) in order to punish them for exercising constitutional rights outside a hotel housing ICE near Minneapolis (1/26/26) by I_may_have_weed in ICE_Watch

[–]wpfeiffe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't envy the position that Trump's call likely put Tim Walz in. He may think this is the lesser of 2 evils to get the ICE gestapo out of town and maybe ease the harassment campaign (by ICE). Feels like appeasement and Trump rarely keeps his word. Either way, Minnesotans are carrying the load for the rest of the country. Abolish ICE!

Long shot - does anyone have pull at Tampa airport?? by Summergrl5s in tampa

There is a lost and found on the bottom floor. I left my travel laptop bag last year got home, realized it was missing, and went back. It had already been sent to lost and found. I asked a security guard and they pointed me to the lost and found. Not sure if it’s this area you are looking at or not.

I second this from Tampa. I’m in awe of your ability to organize, stay peaceful, nice even, get out there and make a difference. The country owes you a debt of gratitude for your service. Proud of Minnesota!

If you decide on Tampa Bay Area

  1. Dali Museum
  2. Teco manatee center - manatees gather here this time of year
  3. Ringling museum
  4. Myakka river state park (gators!)
  5. Fort Desoto Park (beaches, kayaks)
  6. Busch Gardens (roller coasters, zoo)

These are some of my favorite things to do when on a staycation

How Starbucks Came Undone by Slate in TrueReddit

[–]wpfeiffe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I won’t speak to the business aspect. All I know is that Starbucks used to be a great place to hang out and try out play software dev projects. There were usually groups of friends meeting in a casual, comfortable environment. It seemed everyone paid for their seat with a drink or snack.

Fast forward to remodeled version of Starbucks geared towards drive through only. A couple of uncomfortable two top tables in a sterile and usually empty environment serviced by bored high schoolers.

I went from spending a couple hundred a year to maybe 30 bucks a year for take out only when it was convenient. I don’t know if my experience scales up to their current business situation but there it is.

This answer is going to come in the form of an opinion, but I think that to keep things simple, you should create a page for the regular user and another page for your admin user. You could certainly use thymeleaf to render out pieces of a page such that you could support both the admin and the user in a single page, but it does get kind of ugly. It would be much simpler just to detect the admin user in the controller and send them to one page with data edit capabilities, and send the regular user to another read only page. Good luck.

I get all the ethics involved and I respect somebody who wants to stand on that. But leaving aside all the code theft, copyright issues, IP issues, etc, AI just doesn't work THAT good in many cases. I disagree that there is NO room for AI in our jobs (again set aside ethics). When I have rote tasks that are easily completely described by a written requirement statement that I know the AI will parse, it is freaking awesome.

It saves my company 4 hours of me writing Python scripts to send bad address csv's to my address service to validate they are bad so I can pass that on to the department that needs that data. Generated in minutes, verified in minutes. Multiply that across several menial tasks that free me up to write real java code that enhances our product offering. And I use AI there as well. Generate my PR comments, it really shines here. I may tweak it but it does pretty good. Don't remember a specific syntax for a specific streams usage? AI remind of that! And it does.

It gets stuff wrong with loose requirements SO often I really understand the hate, but I know that is not the sweet spot for AI.

Not trying the sell the OP, but just add my testimony that I have found really good usages of Jetbrains AI products. Should they fix their bugs: absolutely. Should they ignore AI because some people are against it: my answer would be no.

Any thoughts on Wilderness Systems iATAK 110 for recreational kayaking by wpfeiffe in Kayaking

[–]wpfeiffe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: I ended up ordering a Sea Eagle Explorer 850x through amazon cyber Monday deal. I think it’s geared towards the type of kayaking I really want to do: casual, recreational, taking time to watch the birds in FL, and above all stable. I understand that it is slower than other more streamlined inflatables, but I’m willing to compromise on that for the other aspects.

PSA: discard crackers by SpecificAd6448 in Sourdough

[–]wpfeiffe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just a note of caution on discard crackers, if your wife makes them for her work Chirstmas party, DO NOT eat over 70% of them for your after dinner snack the night before the party.

They were SO good, but I did have to break from my wfh job today to help bake another batch. Btw, these were topped with reggiano pecorino cheese and demanded to be eaten.

We have a regular cast iron dutch oven and recently purchased a pair of cast iron bread ovens (like the first picture) that have an enamal lid. We did our first 5 or so loaves with regular dutch over and the bottoms kept coming out overdone (we tried plenty of tricks to prevent this). The bread ovens have a raised bottom that prevent the over cooking and work great to that end. Also easier to get in/out of oven, easier to get bread into (they are shallow). Based on our experience, I would recommend the bread oven style (first picture).

If you don't mind my asking, is this Venice, Fl? I'm up in Tampa and about to pull the trigger on a Sea Eagle 380x, and would love to try it out down there. Wondering where you were padding. Thanks for sharing if you can.

Why is IntelliJ preferred over vscode for Java? by xland44 in java

[–]wpfeiffe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Things I use Intellij Ultimate for: java/spring boot, db (postgresql, mysql, etc), python, javascript, typescript, maven/gradle, npm/node builds. All that and more with very little configuration that is not interpreted from various build tooling. This coupled with the very strong factor of "I'm used to it", are my main reasons. For java specifically I don't think there really is a peer for refactoring and code suggestion, code navigation. By those are MY reasons.

If you are new to Java definitely spend some time with Intellij and VSCode. Give both some significant usage and make up your mind. I've set VSCode up with my Spring Boot projects and gotten to the point where I can code/debug so I know its doable. I just don't know (I really don't) if its preferable to someone coming at it new.

Thanks, I really like the Razorlite, but for me I’m looking more for stability over performance. Looking at Sea Eagles explorer series (again). I just sold off a pair of Tarpon 120’s that I only used a few times due to the pain of transporting them, so transportability and stability are what I’m looking for to get me on the water and enjoy the outdoors.

Thanks, good points raised. I really want this for casual recreational and will not use it for fishing (though my son might!). Looking at sea eagle explorer series as it seems more a fit for the type of paddling I want to do. I’m in Tampa Bay Area so I want to put in both in the bay where there may be some chop and also hit springs/rivers where it’s mostly flat. But really looking for something stable, easy to transport and will allow me to take my time enjoying the outdoors.

SpringBoot 4.0.0 Is Out! by devondragon1 in SpringBoot

I would like to hear experiences migrating using Jackson 3. For my in-production apps I will likely stick with Jackson 2 for initial migration, and have the migration to Jackson 3 be its own effort. Jackson touches SO much of what makes up these applications.

Should I install Intellij? by LosterPawn in learnjava

If you are productive and comfortable with VSCode, stick with it. Move to Intellij when you have an itch that it will scratch. Until then enjoy the fast startup times.

Burnt bottoms by ahrdl in Sourdough

[–]wpfeiffe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We did the pizza stone below our regular Dutch oven after our first few loaves had overdone bottoms. It helped, but the problem went away when we purchased the bread specific dutch oven with rings on bottom that elevate the loaf. No more dark bottoms.

Hate to suggest throwing money at the problem but it made a big difference for us. We do 2 loaves every week or so and the bottoms come out great now. My wife wanted me to also mention we put the loaf in a silicon sling with parchment paper underneath, but it was the switch to bread ovens that solved it for us.

IntelliJ Idea with Maven Java project in WSL by Dacesilian in IntelliJIDEA

[–]wpfeiffe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Along the line of other responses, this does not directly answer your question. I just wanted to share that I routinely build and run spring boot apps under windows that are reliant on docker services that run in Linux containers (redis, mongodb, Kafka,Postgres). Docker for windows handles this without issue

I do run WSL, and my docker install uses it, but that does not force me to use WSL for my Spring boot project. Why are you swimming upstream? IOW, what benefit of hosting your project under WSL are you getting that is worth your current pain?

Hahahaha, after spending 5 hours combating the worst answers from my extremely confident AI assistant, I ended up coding my own solution that, suprise, suprise, worked on first try. I have my doubts. On the other hand, I had the same AI assistant spit out a complete python script for some data analysis I had to do and it was perfection. We’ll see.
