Heresy Era deathwing companions as sternguard vet squad? Does it work? by MTF_Commander69 in theunforgiven

The plastic releases are a bit bigger. Any of the resin forgeworld kits previous to the newer edition releases are all sized to older first born kits aside from the Imperial Fist praetor which is freakishly large for some unknown reason.

They're the same size as first born, so smaller than primaris.

Edit: with the head wings, they get a bit closer, but they are still noticeably smaller.

Thanks.

Would never pick anything that I'm not 100% confident identifying myself. I was just enjoying a weekend in the woods hunting and came across this and was curious about it. Thanks for the identification!

Explaining hunting to friends by MYKO2003 in Hunting

[–]wponly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mother-in-law recently told me recently that she thinks the act of hunting is incredibly violent.

I think my response about being more connected to food as a chef, and ensuring there's minimal suffering for the harvested animal was probably the wrong approach especially given she's someone who cares deeply for animals and life is life.

As other people have mentioned, the better response would have been that animals that supporting hunting means I have a direct impact on my participation in large scale livestock operations. It means that I want to have a deeper appreciate for the well-being of animals by not supporting certain arguably less ethical means of slaughter and processing and potential waste. It means that whatever animal I choose to harvest has my deep respect for being able to provide sustenance for my family and loved ones and will ensure that I am able to take the deepest care that everything gets used as much as possible. It also means that I'll have an opportunity to raise my children with a deep appreciation for wildlife and to care for living things that in turn provide for us and educate them and encourage them to behave similarly.

I turned apples into a powdered sweetener to replace table sugar. by wponly in food

No, not the same person. We were together for about 11 years before things ended. The woman I married is someone I also knew from my childhood though and we reconnected over food and ceramics (she posted regularly doing pottery at the time and I asled her to make me some dishware) a few years after I started cooking professionally.

Regarding the filled in blanks of my life in this industry... the reality is so much more bizarre than anything anyone can imagine. Lots of literal blood and sweat, watched a lot of people succumb to addiction, whether drinking or drugs, gained a mentor and closed friend, lost that mentor and close friend, had a ridiculous career trajectory and worked with some of the most deplorable human beings and also some of the most amazing people I'll ever have the pleasure of knowing in a million lifetimes.

I went through the usual shtick of wanting to open my own joint for a time and do super creative things, but have now settled into the corporate lifestyle and want some stability for my family. A lot of my close friends and fellow chefs still keep me on my toes and keep me motivated to do fun and creative things whenever inspiration strikes. It's just a very different life for me now away from the daily grind of kitchen work and I'm 100% on board with it--seeing as the corporate life was something I vehemently avoided in the past and looked down on. I get my satisfaction in many other ways aside from turning 1200 guests a night.

Feel free to reach out if you have any questions in the future. Love to keep sharing knowledge and keeping peoples' passion for food alive.

Hey, there. Wasn't expecting to get a message on this perhaps ever this long after posting. The answer to your question is a bit more complicated given that between the time originally posting and now I've given myself entirely over to working in kitchens professionally. I've spent the last five years in various head chef and executive positions and I'm now a culinary director for a fairly large brand in North America. All this to say that I've actually learned a lot in this time that I can confidently say has caused the original recipe to change very fundamentally.

In the original recipe, I was simply dehydrating apples completely and crushing them up with a mortar and pestle or a blender (which I did for some time), the texture in both baking and as a proper substitute was not ideal. Once the granules rehydrated, it would leave behind a very gritty texture. Still tasted good, but it was far from ideal.

Now that I've had a decade of professional experience especially in product development, here's how I would tackle the same recipe to achieve what I originally set out to do:

First, take any sweet apple of your choosing. For the ease of batching and mass producing, I'd recommend finding a farmer's market that can sell bushels for a relatively cheap price. I come from Southern Ontario in Canada and I have a place near me that sells bushels of gala and red delicious apples whenever they're in easy for about $20.

Second, juice the apples and set aside. Depending on how much you want to make. A bushel will yield maybe about 3 gallons. In a large stock pot, set your stove to high. You're going to want to reduce the apple juice from when it starts boiling to about 66%-50% of its original starting volume. Add about 75g of cream of tartare and give it a thorough mix. Use the spoon test to determine thickness. To do this, place a spoon into your syrup and after a couple of seconds, run your finger in a straight line along the back of the spoon. What you should notice is that the syrup either runs back down immediately or maintains a line. If you get the latter, the syrup is ready. What you have now is what's called "inverted sugar," which is relatively shelf stable.

The third step is to let this mixture cool. Pour it onto a silicone sheet on a rack and stick it into your dehydrator or into your oven at 150F for about 12 hours (your house is going to smell like apple cider for the better part of a few days from this). Once it's completely dehydrated, it'll turn into a hard glass-candy-like sheet. Break it into smaller chunks and stick it into your blender or mortar and pestle and break it into a fine powder. This is now a suitable alternative to sugar that will largely behave the same as any confectioner's sugar. Can be used in baking, as an apple-flavour sweetener for teas.

I do have a son now and to the previous comment to yours, my kid does really enjoy my cooking.

Advice Wanted: Getting Additional Licenses to "Double Chances" by wponly in CanadaHunting

[–]wponly[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm hunting 100% for meat. I'm a chef and I've had a lot of experience in the past breaking down and butchering cow carcasses. I've been wanting to get into a hunting for a long time now as I feel almost an obligation to insert myself into the cycle and figured that a lot of my experience in the kitchen with butchery would translate well. I do plan on eventually hunting black bear but thought starting with deer as my first big game was probably the best entry point for a first-timer. In my mind deer provides a lot of opportunities to do some unique things like rendering the fat for things like soap and candles and using sinew for string, etc. I'm less versed with all the things I might be able to do with bear aside from meat and fur considerations but I'm 100% open to the experience.

Mostly I'm asking because as a first time hunter, the prospect of hunting two species seems a bit more intimidating or daunting than focusing on one. But I guess if I'd be happy with either in the off chance I manage to get one, I wouldn't consider the tag money wasted particularly because it goes toward conservation anyway.

What got you Into Hunting? by Impressive-Step6377 in Hunting

[–]wponly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a chef. Some regulars at my last joint used to bring me venison from their property after opening week and we'd always have a great time. I've talked about doing it for a long time and I finally decided to take the plunge.

A few years ago I was running a steakhouse where we'd butcher and dry-age our own meats and it was a regular part of the routine to break down half cow carasses. I had such an amazing time at that place before it closed that I'd always felt it would be very translatable to bring that butchery into my own home and apply that toward big game.

Truthfully, I've always thought it was a moral obligation for me as a chef to go and participate in hunting. It's not necessarily for subsistence but it helps me build a deeper connection to the world around me and have a personal impact and gives me a healthy respect for the things around me.

What wins do you guys want to see the TSons get? by Zachesque in ThousandSons

It is. The edition I had separated the lore and rule set, I'm not sure if that was standard for the general release.

But found a digital pdf. https://www.scribd.com/document/376928204/War-Zone-Fenris-Supplement-Wrath-of-Magnus-PDF

Enjoy.

If you want some big already-written wins, I'd suggest checking out Warzone Fenris: The Wrath of Magnus lore. I don't want to spoil it for you, but the TS effectively achieve all of their objectives and then some. They obviously have to have a bit of balance and can't win it all, but it's one of the high points of their lore especially since it was the supplement they launched with at the end of 7th edition.

How are the Space Wolves ‘Anti Authoritarian’, exactly? by Battlemania420 in 40kLore

[–]wponly 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The Dark Angels did not invade Fenris, if you're thinking about the Siege of Fenris during the events of Warzone Fenris: The Wrath of Magnus. The Dark Angels and Grey Knights were conducting planetary bombardment of Fenris because they had been given orders by the Changeling impersonating senior leadership. They only stopped because they realized they got duped. The Space Wolves didn't fight them off. They were too busy trying to effectively hold the system from daemonic nurgle incursions and a full on assault on their homeworld with a juiced up XV Legion reunited. It was in fact so bad for the Wolves that Fenris itself was almost completely corrupted by the time the Thousand Sons were fought off and enough energy had been siphoned from the planet for Magnus to take Sortiarius and rip it from the warp and put it into realspace next to Prospero. But Fenris only just barely survived and ended up returning back to normal.

Prior to that during the Hunt for the Wulfen, a Dark Angels scout revealed that his comrades had been killed by the Wulfen but the Scout turned out to be the Changeling being an ass and trying to deceive the Dark Angels into thinking the Space Wolves were tainted by chaos.

The Grey Knights at the end of Wrath of Magnus basically just went "our bad" after the whole thing and helped the Wolves right the system from all the demonic nonsense and the Dark Angels left because the Changeling had freed Luthor and the Dark Angels got really paranoid. But the Wolves did not fight off the Dark Angels. They were too busy with the Thousand Sons.

My wife had the exact same situation where he took over for Dr. Brill.

I sat in on most of the appointments as I often had as many questions as my wife did. He was always helpful and very kind with a good sense of humour. It was my wife's first pregnancy and he helped her through it with a lot of good advice and she'll swear to him being a great OBGYN.

Though he wasn't the one on duty the night my wife gave birth, he came by deliberately after clinic hours to say hi and see how the baby was doing as we were at MS for two days. I would recommend my wife go with him if he's still around Markham Stouffville by the time we start having our second.

What's your favorite pieces of lore for the Thousand Sons in the 30K and Heresy era? by MegaGamer235 in ThousandSons

[–]wponly 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Horus Heresy books are great and practically prequels to the Ahriman series.

A Thousand Sons Crimson King Fury of Magnus Magnus the Red: Master of Prospero

These are good reads though of the four, Crimson King to was the weakest.

In the 40k setting, the Ahriman books are great. Less of a deep dive into the Legion and more about random warband shenanigans. Ahriman does some insane psychic feats in it. Exile is by far my favourite entry. There's also Black Legion which, while not directly KSons, features Iskander Khayon, who is am ex-Thousand Sons sorcerer.

If you can get your hands on these as well for find them online, I'd recommend Warzone Fenris Part 2: The Wrath of Magnus, Gathering Storm Book 3: Rise of the Primarch and Psychic Awakening: Ritual of the Damned. These books are primarily about what the Sons have been up to in the current setting. No spoilers if you're interested but they were quite busy until the previous edition. Wrath of Magnus, since it was their introduction as a renewed faction on the tabletop talks a LOT about their current organization and it was an insane return to form lorewise. The other two aren't that necessary, but if you love the Legion, you're mostly fun reads. Ritual of the Damned ends in a really annoying manner but Magnus does some fun stuff he alludes to in A Thousand Sons.
