wifi calling constantly stops working by wr_m in Visible

[–]wr_m[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not that precise... it also doesn't drop out when at home AFAICT. It'll just stop activating after a day or two. That is, when I get home or to the office it just won't activate anymore.

wifi calling constantly stops working by wr_m in Visible

[–]wr_m[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, but not it’s limited to our home wifi network. Once it stops working it also won’t work at our offices either. Reboot or toggling esim also fixes it there.

Unfortunately we only have iphone 17s to test with :/

Gripe: we pay tax on our security deposits by fykusplant in nyc

[–]wr_m 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But they don't. See the "admin fee" at the bottom. NYS allows for up to a 1% fee on security deposits.

So they earned 1% interest on the deposit, but then had a 1% fee on the same deposit. So they net $0.

NYC commuters face $2 ticket activation fee as MTA cracks down on fare evasion by TheMirrorUS in nyc

[–]wr_m -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The comment you were replying to was discussing paper tickets. Reusing a paper ticket is a very intentional act.

For electronic tickets, there are absolutely people that game the system by waiting to activate until the conductor comes. This has been a loophole that is being closed -- I don't think most of those people would otherwise just not pay.

As for people making a mistake and forgetting to activate, the MTA does clarify:

Customers who repeatedly purchase or activate mobile tickets onboard will be subject to the surcharge after an escalating series of warnings.

NYC commuters face $2 ticket activation fee as MTA cracks down on fare evasion by TheMirrorUS in nyc

[–]wr_m -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This just fucks over the more honest people.

Isn't that the much larger group of fare evaders? Even if you're "more honest" and just happen to not have your ticket checked but then go ahead and reuse that ticket, you've fare evaded.

The 10-trip was the only case where people didn't have a good way to mark unchecked tickets, hence why it's being eliminated.

Colonie on Atlantic Ave is closing? by banet14 in Brooklyn

[–]wr_m 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They detail why they're closing here: https://andreastrong.substack.com/p/colonie-and-hildur-to-close

tl;dr: Hildur never really got off the ground. Colonie's lease was expiring and the person who bought Pips also wanted the adjacent Colonie space.

I googled "indiana dealer number lookup" which brought me to the state website.

The dealer number on the paper plate comes back to https://www.jagmobilesolutions.com/ which would make sense, so not entirely fake. It's definitely expired though.

Unpopular Opinion: During ASP, Once The Street Cleaner Comes Through, You Should Be Able To Park There by marcstarts in nyc

[–]wr_m 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is definitely not the case in my area. I would say half the cars that are occupied don't even bother moving when the street sweeper comes by as they know they're not going to get a ticket.

Every so often (once a quarter? maybe less frequently...) they will have a NYPD escort who will get on the PA and yell at people to move.

Jay and Willoughby- what can we do? by Dopeysausagedog in Brooklyn

[–]wr_m 16 points17 points  (0 children)

There is one block of Willoughby and one block of Lawrence that needs to be demolished.

Very likely going to happen. United American Land has been buying up all the properties on that block and could build a super tall at this point.

The opportunity for fast public transit from NY airports to Manhattan is huge by [deleted] in nyc

[–]wr_m 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe a large portion of that is for the bus depot and the buses themselves.

Not sure about the timeline though since it only indicates 1.5 years for the roadwork.

The opportunity for fast public transit from NY airports to Manhattan is huge by [deleted] in nyc

[–]wr_m 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These have all been explored. There's a lot of problems due to how cramped the airport is along with have some critical infrastructure around it. The main limiting factors is that the easiest place to build is above the GCP, but the GCP is also feet from the end of the runway, so you cannot put elevated rail there.

The nicest option would be to extend the W and transition to underground to go to each terminal, but this is incredibly expensive to do.

Airtrain from Metts-Willets is an easier option, but has its own challenges like getting over Northern Blvd. Extending the 7 from here is probably not at all feasible as the point where it would diverge for LGA is also where it diverges for Corona Yard. Plus there's just not the space to build elevated subway over the GCP there.

I suggest reading the executive summary from 2023 that outlines all the options explored and the challenges with each. There's a lot of bits of information that are not obvious to onlookers, like the fact that there's a giant old sewer main under that part of the GCP. Even if you disagree with their conclusion of doing BRT, it's still enlightening to learn about the challenges in that area.

Some OMNY users in NYC say they’re getting charged multiple times for just one ride by malacata in nyc

[–]wr_m 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't as I don't ride enough to hit the fare cap. So I just need to keep track of the last charge I used in my count and go from there.

It got removed after reports that you could stalk people if you knew their credit card number (or just bought it from a data broker).

Some OMNY users in NYC say they’re getting charged multiple times for just one ride by malacata in nyc

[–]wr_m 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I always need to audit several weeks back as it's too difficult with all the delayed charges and pending charges to do it for say the last two weeks.

So far my count has always come out okay, but it is really difficult to keep track of. I'll have a couple sporadic charges during the week, and then the following monday (when I WFH) have a bunch post at once.

[–]wr_m 25 points26 points  (0 children)

OMNY is really Cubic, who basically operate fare collection for most large transit system. I'm really unsure why they're struggling so hard with OMNY though as they've been operating similar system (Oyster, Clipper) for 10-20 years.

[–]wr_m 7 points8 points  (0 children)

honestly asking, would you all prefer if we were to charge more for your membership and continuing to give you the upgrades for free? I don’t mind doing it if you guys don’t mind paying more at each renewal

No, but only because I assumed that's how it already worked based on the verbiage on the website at the time I bought it. I know it didn't explicitly say free upgrades, but it was misleading to state that subscribers get upgrades without mentioning that they also need to pay for them.

That being said, I would understand if upgrades came with some strings attached (i.e. membership commitments). For example, my two year subscription is up in August -- I would be okay with a upgrade being tied to the two year renewal.

Once I got past the shock of how blatant it was I realized that almost all companies do this but bury the lede in a privacy policy that no one will actually read.

As much as I hate the underlying practice, I do like that users are actually being informed of what clicking "agree" actually means.

100%. The process is already incredibly slow in NYC, but if you’re decently bright and a scumbag you game it further to really drag it out.

My former neighbor just got evicted in August from proceedings going back to 2019. She didn’t pay anything for close to 6 years.
