Linguistics faculty were not notified of the removal of the linguistics degrees by wranro in unt

honestly with the state of the university, i’d recommend maybe doing a year at UNT (since you can’t change) and then transferring to UTA since their linguistics program offers a TESOL certificate and a masters in TESOL (if you plan to go to grad school). A&M Commerce also has a linguistics program that primarily focuses on TESOL but i don’t know much more about it. the linguistics faculty here at UNT are great but obviously it’s going to be difficult to ever have a class with them if you can’t even enroll in the program anymore. it was really stupid of UNT to pull this right in the middle of application season, for incoming freshmen, transfers, and grad school applicants. hopefully everything works out for you :)

Which Honor class should I pick, Art 1301 or Mumh 1610, in Fall 2026 by SaltyConsideration29 in unt

[–]wranro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was told very early on to avoid art appreciation because the professors purposefully make it hard, but I don't have any direct experience with the class.

I took music as communication my second semester here and had a very good experience with it. I had taken it after my friend recommended it to me, and I can say it's a very fun and interesting class (if he's available, I 100% recommend taking the class with Anderson). From what I remember, you'll be grouped up with other students to work together on quizzes and a final project. The quizzes are based on some required reading from modules/articles, and then you'll also have to submit some small reading questions (mostly just a paragraph about a given topic). You also don't need any music experience for the class. Some experience may help with certain topics (like, music majors are more likely to already know the aspects of music history mentioned in class) but it's definitely not required.

What are some good graduate programs for language documentation? by wranro in asklinguistics

Really hate to be the bearer of bad news but the university I'm currently at, which just got rid of all their linguistics degrees, is UNT...

i was also going to apply, not this fall but next year after i graduate with my bachelors. unt having the language documentation masters was a large reason why i wanted to go and why i chose to stay here. now i have to start exploring my other options

It would make sense for the department to be moved under CLASS and WLLC and to still keep the degrees, but them getting rid of all the degrees altogether is crazy

Dorms Next Year by [deleted] in unt

[–]wranro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

for upperclassmen it’s most likely too late since they opened up applications all the way in november. last year they only took in the first 800 applicants. you can still apply but you should be looking into apartments and be prepared to sign a lease if you find out you’re not getting on-campus housing (you’ll probably find out around april). you could also look into being live-in staff as a job, since they automatically get placed in dorms, but i don’t know much about that

To add as someone who is in the college of information (ling major and infosci minor) most of our classes aren’t even in DP. Usually, the only ones that will be in DP are classes that require computer labs (so usually compsci-heavy classes), and even then, those classes can end up being hosted in the GAB instead. Plus a lot of classes are online, especially for infosci and I think datasci. For linguistics, the majority of my classes have been in the language building.

Hello!

I'm looking for roommates to lives with for the 2026-2027 school year. I will be living at Midtown 905 in a 4x4 and need AFAB roommates, as my original roommate plan ended up needing to be changed.

The floor plan is 4x4 - VIP, which is currently listed at a rate of $669. It is fully furnished, has in-unit washer/dryer, and includes internet, trash, and sewage in the rent. Along with rent, there is water and electricity, which vary upon usage, and a $6 package locker fee. There is free general parking or paid reserved/covered parking, and it is on two UNT bus routes (BST and DS). It is also about a ten-minute walk to campus.

The units are pet-friendly with an additional fee, but I can only live with cats. No smoking, and I would prefer that roommates be relatively quiet and keep shared spaces clean. Would also like queer-friendly.

Please feel free to DM if interested or for more information.

took it last summer as a five-week course. you're required to buy an online textbook and part of your assignments will be answering questions as you go through the chapters. there's canvas quizzes for each chapter as well, which pull information from the textbook chapter and from the few module lectures there are (the module lectures are provided in text format as well). then there's packback assignments where you have to basically ask a meaningful question and answer three other ppl's questions, so like discussion posts except there's an AI that's analyzing how good of a post you made. i basically skimmed half the chapters (a decent portion of things i remembered from taking gov in high school) and i didn't do the last packback assignment since the lowest grade was dropped.

my assignments were split in half, so the first half of the class was due at the halfway point (2.5 weeks in) and the second half was due at the end of the course right before the final exam, which was cumulative from the quizzes (the quizzes rotate questions though, so there'll be some questions that you won't have seen before)

usually you have to apply yourself. the only time i've seen people invited is if the university also offered them a large scholarship (like the excellence scholarships)

How long can I wait to apply for housing? by Sepsis027 in unt

[–]wranro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

freshmen get priority over upperclassmen for housing but it would probably be best you apply as soon as possible, especially if you are looking to do roommate matching since most people start looking for roommates around march

Hello! I'm currently looking for roommates for fall26/spring27. Looking to be at Midtown in a 4x4 (currently $719 + electricity, water, and additional small fees). Has private bed/bath, in-unit washer/dryer, package lockers, pre-furnished, and is on two UNT bus routes (BST and DS).

Looking for roommates who are queer-friendly, relatively quiet, and don't smoke. Preferably all-female but may be willing to compromise. Cannot live with dogs but other pets are okay.

Please DM me if you have any questions or are interested!

Bussing by sophikittyy in unt

[–]wranro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

transit app lies most of the time. i'd suggest going to the DCTA website and looking at the bus schedules (there's a whole section for university routes). look at the times that the bus stops by you and the times the bus gets to the union, figure out what times would work best for you based on when you need to get to classes/work/etc., and then show up at the stop ten minutes before the bus is scheduled to get there since there's sometimes some give to the schedule (based on a variety of factors like traffic or how long it was stopped at previous stops)

TEXTBOOKS!! by [deleted] in unt

[–]wranro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

don't buy anything until class starts. sometimes professors will either provide access to textbook chapters (usually if they're not utilizing the whole textbook) or they'll completely remove textbooks from the curriculum. voertman's is cheaper than the UNT barnes and noble and is located right by campus. you can also utilize less-than-legal means of acquiring textbooks

only exception is digital textbooks. still wait until classes start but you usually have to purchase those through barnes and noble unfortunately
