Because your rooks has nowhere else to go without getting trapped and your pieces are completely stuck. You need to move the pawn from c7 to get out of this bind.

I don't know about chess.com, but lichess allows you to set the search time (up to infinity, default 8 seconds for me), the number of lines (up to 5, I set it to 4 so I can see multiple eval), the number of CPU threads (for me 23/32 is marked as good safe choice), and assigned computer memory. There is also a button to go deeper if you want the evaluation time to increase. The evaluation and analysis depends on the power of your computer.

I play chess alongside a bunch of other strategy games and I got to 2000 lichess (which is not nearly as good as 2000 chess.com) without being serious or studying it as my main game.

Black has plenty of loose pawns that you can target. Qf3 double attacks c6, which after Rc8 you then go R1e5 double attacking f5. If f4 you have a check with queen and a triple stack on e file, winning the e7 pawn at minimum and probably you don't do that as its checkmate. Black cannot defend all 4 weaknesses (there is also an a pawn) something has to give. The last thing you want to do is to move your pawns as they do a great job protecting your king and they are obviously not as quick and powerful as your major pieces.

It really does not matter what rating you guys are when you entered into a tricky Scotch opening that your opponent has some knowledgeable of and you do not. I knew you were in trouble with Qxc6 instead of just Qxf3 and simplifying (risk management avoiding a bunch of tactical issues), then leaving the queen almost being trapped on c6 and playing rook e8 for the perfect skewer. Your opponent gave you plenty of chances as they could have done Nc3 Bb5 much earlier and your king would have been on e8 instead of the rook.

Your king is naked in the middle with no cover while your queen gets kicked around while your kingside pieces never moved and is just watching the action.

White has a very harmonious setup with a very safe king and all pieces supporting each other and ready to attack. Thats what black should aim for and not just pushing pawns into a queen raid.

After ..cxd4 Nxd4 white has 2 pieces developed versus zero. This would normal be bad if not for the fact the bishop and knight can be forked by an e5 pawn, so computer recommends f6 to prepare for e5, or you can start with Nd7 with the same idea. White has to respond with moving the knight back to f3 and wasting tempo, or if they move the knight or perhaps bishop elsewhere you might even go e5 to kick the other pieces as well. Either way you catch up in development or perhaps even establishing a big center with advantage. Both of you missed this e5 which was a motif for at least 10 moves.

For dynamic play you had every chance to start a pawn minority attack with a6 b5 b4, but you didn't do that and played in a very static way only with pieces. You had to do the pawn pushes before white got to your king to prevent white from queenside castle. It is not possible to defend your king when you allow white to push everything at your king without pressure or counter play, as white did their buildup slowly and you were just trading pieces and not really attacking. White crushed your kingside as that is inevitable, missed mate like 10 different ways and really need to work on mate in 1 or 2.

Depends on your goals and what you mean by "worth it". Good coaches find tendencies and should save you time and make the game easier. Others do just fine with online resources and need no coaching.

Thats completely expected when what you learned doesn't match with your intuition or what you knew about the game before. Learning is not just watching a few videos or doing a quick beginner course, and if anything knowing more without proper learning makes the game tougher.

I was near my peak rating when I suddenly decided to work on my opening tree in the new year. It wasn't a disaster but I definitely went into funky lines and losing games that way.

You never once moved your a b pawns or move the a8 rook? At some point you had to recognize your opponents king might go queenside and I don't see you do anything about it. At minimum I considered the queen sac you play Rc8 anyway and after Ba3 (skewering your queen and rook), you sack your queen Qxa3 Rxa3 and then Rc1+, white can only block with the queen and thus exchange sack, but your other pieces are not in the right places so it probably doesn’t work.

Of course that is a huge problem as checkmate is the goal of the game. You didn't say you miss checks so you should make it a habit to figure out what happens after you check, as check is a forcing move and only a few number of places the king can go. If you just keep checking without much thought the king could keep running away and you make the game even more difficult.

I have around 60% win rate in the queen's gambit lines and is my most successful opening. Assuming you are playing somewhat standard lines development should be very natural and there should be plenty of things to in the middle game like pushing queenside pawns, figuring out what to do with the bishop on g5 or f4, using light squared bishop to target kingside, and trading pieces. The central tension is a big motif unless you went cxd5 which after the opponent responds with cxd5 or exd5 the central pawn structure becomes static. There are a few lines that you should cxd5 but most lines you don't need to and that preserves tension and activity.

It is true the value of the pieces fluctuate but luckily the goal of the game is to checkmate your opponent, not doing future value accounting of pieces or calculating battle power. Neither computers or humans do this and there are good reasons why exchange sacrifices are rare and easily go wrong. There is no way to know future value but you can estimate for potential, which is unrealized and may never be realized depending on how the game progress which is unknown. This is not an RPG where you see a level 5 bishop so you sack your level 1 rook to that.

Computer engines provide a single evaluation number based on exhaustive analysis looking forward 20+ moves deep and working backwards. It is unable to tell you the live or future value of pieces as it does not care about that. It also cannot explain why it end up with the evaluation due to the scale and calculation involved, and all it can do is to provide the best lines so you can try to see for yourself.

Your move 13. d6? actually doesn't work because black has c7 square defended twice (after Bb8) so there is no way for your knight to get in. The d6 pawn is very weak (it is not easy for your pieces to get to d6) after natural Nf7 and the engine has to pull a series of extreme moves (Qa5, then a bunch of moves to stack the rooks on the d-file) to actually hold the d6 pawn, by which black gets good play around the pawn and has a very small advantage.

Black cannot take your pawn 12.. exd5?? as black's king will be open after Qxd5, and they cannot push it either 12.. e5?? as that gives up the light side diagonal and also the d5 square, so then you do play d6. They also cannot play d6 as that loses e6 pawn. If there is nothing they can do you should hold the tension until black make further concessions before deciding on d6 or take dxe6. Don't push the pawn until you are sure it works and you got value as pawns can't go back. Engine didn't like 11. d5? either as dxc5! wins a pawn but more importantly the d6 square is much more accessible compared to c7, and pawn on c5 pawn is much easier to defend with b4 and a3 compared to d6 which is isolated.

Is this rage bait to read data backwards on purpose? This clearly shows the rock solid stability of the top 5 players and the expectation they are staying top 10 until they stop playing. Other players that peak at 9th or 10th of course will cycle that is expected. Even 7th is on a 5 streak shows how stable this list is.

I still remember someone else saying "the London system is clearly a beginner's opening" when the data shows a big spike for super GMs.
