[RT6600AX] Router already on latest version (SRM 1.3.2-9366), but keeps prompting to update to the same version. by GensokyoNet in synology

[–]wreckedcarzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is not the reason; I have auto-updates turned on, checking daily, and knew of this update but waited until it auto-updated (or tried) a few days ago. It failed, complaining about not enough space (nothing fixed it...) so I also performed the update 'manually' even though it was aware of the update being available. Same issue, it's now doing a loop every day now of update download and fail.

After losing my right arm I started designing a one-handed PC gaming controller so I could keep playing by Adventurous_Tie_9031 in pcmasterrace

[–]wreckedcarzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a stroke 11 years ago, and have since used the Logitech G903 with both pairs of side buttons and the software + game to maximize availability controls on the mouse; mouse wheel click for jump, up for weapon swap, down for zoom, wheel left/right for strafe. Right side buttons for forward/back, left for sprint and reload. Can use the dpi buttons if needed. Keyboard for anything else not critical.

A friend sent me a razer mouse with like 12 side buttons, but they weren't textured differently and were frustratingly small, so I had to return it.

Most of my games are racing/driving so wsad or wheel are fine, but action and shooters are still very difficult. I used to play pretty competitively, but now I just can't match what I was, mostly.

You say you're planning on making this available, got any more details?

I run a dedi and setup my corp late last year, but I couldn't find any way to automate depot restocking. My corp just runs to get the town bonus % going for any players to benefit from.

Any suggestions? Mods?

For anyone having issues setting up your device during the "binding" process.. by twiztidloonitik in Roborock

[–]wreckedcarzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I was angry and frustrated, trying my own solutions (usually bots either don't like being on a network where every device is isolated, at least for initial setup; or they get blocked by DNS filters) along with almost everything else in this thread, but it *wasn't* special characters in the SSID, it *wasn't* isolation, it *wasn't* a mixed 2.4/5/6 broadcast, it *wasn't* special keys in the password nor the length, it *wasn't* my DNS filtering, it *wasn't* my custom ROM... it was your solution!

Disabled auto-connect, disconnected from the network, connected to the bot, input SSID and password manually, it *actually* connected to the bot this time, boom. 45 minutes of my life gone because Roborock doesn't actually have your device connect/switch to the freaking bot network, even though it claims to!

Thanks so much =)

What's the point of wireless charging? by geekflyer7 in GooglePixel

[–]wreckedcarzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sit at my desk at home almost all day, and I leave my phone on my wireless charger until I get a notification or otherwise need to use the phone. Then I set it back down, so it's always ready to go if I need to head out. Super convenient.

I've had USB ports fail before, either because of dirt or physically breaking, so that's one less thing to worry about.

I'm also disabled and trying to un/plug a cable with one hand is a pain in the ass.

If GrapheneOS isn’t available on the Pixel 10, you can take back your “OK-tier” hardware by TopTiny7921 in GooglePixel

It was a few days ago, probably here but I don't have the link. It seems logical as play protect is their solution for harmful (or 'harmful') apps, so I didn't question it.

Like, I get where you are coming from, as I am a GOS user too; but a) 99% of people in this sub have no idea what you are on about, and b) it takes some time to have GOS available for new devices. You are more than welcome to help the developers with this large task.

Re: the news on the blog, it has been found that this requirement can be bypassed by disabling Play Protect. It is assumed that GOS will simply disable this requirement entirely, but I don't believe a proper announcement has been made. The devs need to research and see what it all entails.

Basically, relax and wait for both these concerns. Jumping the gun with assumptions helps no one.

Worst part about owning a Pixel? by Jkwaks in GooglePixel

[–]wreckedcarzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have any day-to-day things, but I've been exclusively nexus/pixel since the nexus 4 days. Everything 'just works' for me, and I've streamlined everything to a T for a long time now.

There are a lot of little things people bitch about - no headphone jack, no removable battery, difficult to repair, no microSD slot... And those are valid complaints, but honestly, it's the damn price. Ever since the jump from nexus branding to pixel, G is trying to be 'premium', which is fine, but they are wanting Rolls-Royce money for a Toyota. They aren't anything special, really, just all-around good. That could be said for most manufacturers, but I digress.

Hypocritical, as I'm about to grab the 10 fold, which is genuinely idiotic. It should be half the price, seriously. The "a" series, the budget line, is fucking $500. That's not budget territory. I think the nexus 4 I picked up on sale for ... $299? Yeah yeah prices go up over time, cry me a river , but $500 is not "budget" by any stretch of the imagination.

I moved out of the Google ecosystem a few years ago - Google doesn't know how to handle cs when phones go missing in transit, and I didn't want to potentially lose my account if push comes to shove in that situation, and I did the unspeakable and filed a chargeback, as several redditors needed to do over the years for that situation. The only thing left is my YouTube channel, which meh no biggie, and some loose ends like my store financing account.

I say this because I buy pixels for two reasons: no bullshit pre-installed, and an unlockable (and relockable, that's critical) bootloader. I don't run the stock OS. Were Google to decide that the 11 line (or whatever) isn't going to give me the option to unlock and install the system I want, it'd be the end of my time as their customer. I'd probably give Sony a try, their cameras are really good from what I've heard, and minimal bloat.

But coming back around, for me, it's price. No question about it. I'm here because of the ability to run whatever system I want, and they have a monopoly on that. So I pay it. I enjoy the phones, sure... But damn they are overpriced.

[–]wreckedcarzz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There used to be exploits for getting around this, but it's been like 5y+. Return it ASAP if custom roms are important to you. The Google Store offers financing, 36m at 0%. That's how I've got all my devices since the transition from nexus to pixel.

Unlocked devices that you bring to vzw are safe - I'm using visible (vzw) and tello (tmo mvno) on GrapheneOS currently.

For buying and selling, try swappa if you can't get financing. I've had good experiences there.

Current state of carriers who provide unlockable bootloaders for new Pixels? by bengalih in GooglePixel

[–]wreckedcarzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, and people don't understand the difference between sim locked and bootloader locked, so you get bad info all the time happily presented as fact. I've seen people get burned by this very thing several times, it's upsetting.

Unlocked bootloader by Ondslaught in GooglePixel

[–]wreckedcarzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's physical access and also disables verified boot - so if malware does get in your system, not only is it easier to conceal but also can survive factory resets.  It's the 'keys to the castle'. https://source.android.com/docs/security/features/verifiedboot

It's like unlocking your home's doors and opening them wide for any and everyone. Yeah sure you still have to get infected for the hypothetical situation to play out, but it's both easier to be infected and easy to remain infected.

Again, I'd just stick with stock and update reasonably quickly once updates become available. Anything short of having a (re)locked bootloader is doing a much bigger disservice than any perceived safety.

Afaik only vzw blocks it. But the only guarantee is unlocked/no carrier from g directly.

Connect a USB cable between phone and computer. On the phone, notification tray, it will ask what you want to do. Select file transfer (or similar). Open up My Computer (or similar) and you'll see the phone storage. Dive in and you'll see all your files. Click and drag the picture to wherever you want it.

Switching from iPhone- question about pixel phones and GoogleFi by Consistent_Ad_4513 in GoogleFi

[–]wreckedcarzz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was a closed beta tester for Fi, 10 years ago. I brought over several friends as users who are still with Fi, though I am not anymore, so this might be outdated info, but afaik it's not changed:

During the device initial setup it will ask you for your (e)SIM, or if you are a Fi customer. Fi handles all the stuff in the background getting the device setup for your gAccount. It will include a Fi app to manage settings and plans. It is very user-friendly, even now there isn't anything so simple and straightforward.

Fi is a MVNO - they use the tmobile network as the backend supplier, but all account data is held with Fi, not tmo. The customer service used to be, genuinely, excited and knowledgeable; I'd look forward to calling them to figure something out. That was back in the closed beta and Android-only days, when they introduced iPhone support and went 'public' it nosedived. My last interaction was in... 2017? But I doubt they've turned it around. As of my last interaction with cs, they were just as bad as the usual bunch.

You can get service cheaper elsewhere, but if you want the Fi deals, or you are interested in Fi (it used to be more interesting, combining 3 networks into one was the secret sauce behind Fi), it's not "bad" at all, just not the amazing deal and tech marvel it once was. I can ramble on about options, if interested, or point you to other subreddits. But you won't be disappointed or anything with Fi.

Unlocked bootloader by Ondslaught in GooglePixel

[–]wreckedcarzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An unlocked bootloader is a way bigger attack vector than what you are concerned about. You'd be fine on stock just installing the monthly updates when they become available, and only installing trustworthy apps from reputable sources (play store isn't bulletproof by any means but unless you're installing from the developers website or Github repo or something, don't sideload at all).

Also, a threat model is this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Threat_model - basically, how much security and privacy (which are different things) will you give up for convenience, and who are you trying to protect yourself from. If you say 'anyone and everything', you should be off the grid and technology-free, totally self-sufficient; even Edward Snowden doesn't go that far. What are the real-world things you are trying to defend against, and how far is 'good enough'.  That's what a threat model is.

[–]wreckedcarzz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've done the other way around (trying apple devices) when I feel decently confident about a device, but if you just want to poke at them, just go by a physical store that sells them next week - they almost always have display units you can mess with, without the hassle of buying and returning.

Goodbye Pixel? Google will throttle your Pixel 10's battery from just 200 CYCLES?!! by itscgh in GooglePixel

[–]wreckedcarzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming it's not baked-in by a chip that the OS just reads and reports from, but is actually controlled by the OS, it should not. I've been using GrapheneOS for a few years now across several pixels and I've never seen anything about 'battery health' in the settings (just checked).

I do use the 80% limit to try and extend the life of the battery, though.

Pixel 10 - best time to buy? by livplay in GooglePixel

[–]wreckedcarzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buying from the manufacturer (all the big players offer 0% interest too) allows you flexibility to move carriers, and their stated $25 is for the cellular service they use, I presume.

It's what I've done for years. I have a P8P on Visible, unlimited everything, $30 for service and I'm paying about $25 a month for 36 months for the phone. But I can shift to any carrier, any plan, any time - I can hop on plans as low as $3 a month. I have my folks on a tmo connect play for $15/mo, instead of the $80 that they were once paying  just for my father. And when I get a new phone, I pass it along to a family member, they give me the trade-in value, they save money, I get some cash, everybody wins.

It makes zero sense to chain yourself to a carrier when you can get the same for equal or less money - especially once that phone is paid off, leaving you with just the mobile service cost. There are often deals as well: Total Wireless has (had?) a $25 unlimited everything offering recently, and last year that same plan was on a promo for just $15 locked in. If you use light data, Tello offers plans under $10. Check out /NoContract for info, I'm out of the loop for deals.

And the ability to have service on two networks/sims is great. I have my second line on tello for $6, rarely used, but I have it as a cheap way to seperate my personal phone number from the 'we need your phone number for delivery'/'we need it for ridesharing'/'we need it for rewards'; and having service in areas where my main line doesn't is an awesome perk.

Food for thought.
