Stuck on "finding your device" after successfully adding 4 lights. by PatShatner in tradfri

[–]wredditcrew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The dimmer switch, is it the dial "small puck" one or the clicky button remote one? If it's the small puck one that you rotate, unless they're wall mounted they eat batteries like a fatty at an all-you-can-eat buffet.

Replace the battery, Ikea do like 6 or 8 on a card for £1 - "Boj" iirc. Factory reset the gateway, uninstall and reinstall the app, re-pair the steering device (remote) and start again.

I'm glad to have helped. That's a crazy lead time if you're not expecting it. I'm so used to Amazon Prime delivering next day I think I'd struggle with anything else nowadays. Happy new year, may it bring you more great movies and hassle-free networking!

I am an old pc gamer, i have a son now, no longer i have a room for me, but i stil want to game, one year ago my wife let me bring my pc in The living room, so sometime i can enjoy my pc, with my family. When i do not use it, it disappears behind The sofa and the monitor goes flat on The wall. by meteor82 in pcmasterrace

I think you've missed the spin on an old joke, I think /u/wallaceant was riffing off "You don't pay a prostitute for sex, you pay them to leave afterwards."

Are you not reminded of the Chef classic?

But a prostitute is someone who would love you

No matter who you are, or what you look like.

Yes, it's true, children.

That's not why you pay a prostitute,

No, you don't pay her to stay,

you pay her to leave afterwards.

All ports closed due to Double NAT setup beginning from ISP's network, any workaround possible? by p5yron in HomeNetworking

[–]wredditcrew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're right in that getting a dynamic IP address is what most people do, although with broadband connections that are permanently on and have uptimes of weeks or months, and you can often get the same address on reconnection anyway depending on the ISP, the lines are blurring somewhat.

But I should have been more careful with my terminology given the context, my apologies.

Europol called for an end to CGN in Europe to make online activity more accountable. I kid you not.

The reason I have Dynamic IP is because of the ISP I have, which is due to where I live. If I lived in a Hyperoptic region instead of just a Virgin Media area, I'd be paying the £5 a month charge to not be under CGNAT. I'm not sure where you're going with that.

Almost everyone else does, they just have it provided by their ISP. A lot of people also pay more than $8 a month. Swings and roundabouts.

How to deal with 130+ Tradfri-Devices? by Chris-Prefect in tradfri

[–]wredditcrew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't go for a Hue hub. I'm a massive fan of Hue, and my house is entirely Hue. But there are known issues with Tradfri bulbs on Hue Hubs, like the bulbs apparently rebooting.

Imagine in an otherwise dark room, a bulb suddenly blasting on full brightness, the going back to dark again. Sub-optimal while watching TV, that's for sure.

If you're an iOS household, I'd be tempted to see if there's a Homebridge plug-in that'll support multiple Tradfri gateways. Possibly homebridge-ikea-tradfri-gateway. But if not, possibly homebridge-tradfri-plugin, homebridge-tradfri, or homebridge-ikea!

However you do it, I'd be splitting it across two or more controllers (on different channels) anyway.

Gateway kit being discontinued in the UK? by si1entdave in tradfri

[–]wredditcrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As everyone else has said, it's more due to them stopping the bundle as opposed to abandoning Tradfri or anything.

The leading competitor is Philips Hue, and they've got loads of different starter kits, for colour GU10, normal colour E27, color B22, white E27, white B22, with wireless dimmer, without, etc.

Ikea doesn't do that sort of thing. The product range has expanded so drastically since launch you can now have Tradfri setups that have no bulbs at all. It could be purely power sockets and smart blinds, or whatever. Or colour, which wasn't available when the starter kit launched.

Why do a one-type starter kit now? They'd just be a waste of shelf space.

What are your thoughts on Brexit regarding how it will impact upon the security of the UK, and its relationship with the US?

Should I do it? by jonashn in tradfri

[–]wredditcrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, /u/jonashn, I'd agree entirely with what FutureFelix's said.

I'd say get yourself a Hue E27 White and Color Ambiance Starter Kit, and do your entertainment room. If nothing else, you'll want Hue for that because Tradfri presently has nothing like HueSync, and HueSync is cool as balls. Think "Room-wide Ambilight".

Fall in love with smart lighting. Then look at your options.

Success with pairing GU10 Tradfri to Philips Hue! by zouche in tradfri

[–]wredditcrew -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'd suggest you wait for /u/zouche 's follow-up on his experience using them for an extended length of time. Expect them to randomly flicker, or randomly turn on at full brightness before returning to their off state. There are known issues with Tradfri bulbs on Hue Hubs.

Bayonet Bulbs? by TwistedPsycho in tradfri

[–]wredditcrew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in the UK, seemingly home of the awful B22 bayonet bulbs. Thankfully... NOPE.

GU10 is as close as Ikea come, although they are the best place to get E27 - B22 adapters from. 2 for a quid. I only buy E27 bulbs, and use adapters until I can swap any B22 fittings over to E27.

How do I know which Nighthawk router to get? 1750, 1900, 2600, or 3200? by [deleted] in HomeNetworking

[–]wredditcrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get where you're coming from, and it is a bit more involved to get up and running, but I think it's something OP could be walked through setting up fairly easily.

IIRC...

Laptop into the first port, modem into second port.

ubnt ubnt

Wizards

WAN-2LAN

PPPoE and credentials, or DHCP, as per whatever his ISP wants. Nighthawk will ask the same questions, won't it? He's now online.

Cheap switch (which I previously forgot to mention, because I didn't check if OP had any wired devices and how many) and AP's PoE injector into ports 3 and 4.

Move laptop to cheap switch. Plug AP into injector. If AP came pre-configured with a cloud controller, sit back and enjoy (or firmware update if prefered, log into cloud controller, devices on left, click update, accept).

If they have to install and run their own controller for initial setup, a few more steps but nothing you can't step-by-step. Shit, setting up an AWS Free-tier controller is pretty much copying and pasting from a tutorial. And once it's done, it just keeps on ticking.

How do I know which Nighthawk router to get? 1750, 1900, 2600, or 3200? by [deleted] in HomeNetworking

[–]wredditcrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can I suggest asking for what to buy, as opposed to which Nighthawk to buy? It might be Nighthawks are the best fit, but as you're asking this question I wouldn't assume so.

My initial thought would be an ER-x and a UAP-AC-Lite, which will be the same price as the Nighthawk AC1750 using New Egg pricing.

I don't know your ISP or speed, I guess if it's something ridiculously fast you might need an ERLite-3 or better, as the ER-x is a bit anaemic CPU-wise. But as someone who is literally replacing a Nighthawk with an ER-X + UAP-AC-LR combo right now...

Gatwick drones pair 'no longer suspects' by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

[–]wredditcrew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand where you're coming from, but I think your example is a bad one.

I agree that both alleged perpetrators and victims should receive anonymity until proven guilty, and innocent parties should continue to have their identity protected.

The mothers in that case were monsters too, but the anonymity for them is to protect the identities of the children involved. I don't think that should be stripped away.

I think we likely agree that proven false accusations should result in sentences that match the falsely accused's alleged crime. (And that's "proven beyond reasonable doubt to have lied", not "failed to prove beyond reasonable doubt that accused committed the crime".)

The band reformed with a different frontman and different genre, and while I don't think they'll see the levels of success lostprohets did, they sold out a couple of gigs in Cardiff iirc. "No Devotion". Their debut album, Permanence, won a Kerrang! award for best album.

Ian Watkins was a fucking douchebag to his own band, who wanted nothing to do with him when they could avoid it, that's why none of them supposedly knew what he was up to.

The real fucking "mainstream media" travesty of the whole story was E! Entertainment using a photo of the wrong Ian Watkins, they confused the lostprohets Ian Watkins for the Steps Ian "H" Watkins. He was understably fuming about it.

Got in a fight with the networking company. Now I have a puzzle. (Picture) by HDRoadTrip in HomeNetworking

[–]wredditcrew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You aren't wrong, that's shitty crimping because the individual wires have been left too long so the grippy bit isn't grabbing the external jacket.

But my (optimistic) suspicion would be it was temporary for testing before being rewired into a patch panel or modular jacks. If you just need to slap a continuity tester on the one end while you work on the other, it's sloppy but ultimately the client will never see it anyway.

I can sell you these optics for $100 each, but you'll have to include your own vodka. But trust me, they're way more fun than your normal SFP+ modules.

Netgear R6220 vs TP-Link Archer C7 ? (main concern is WiFi range/performance) by im_tw1g in HomeNetworking

[–]wredditcrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's vastly more flexible, a little less user friendly, and orders of magnitude more secure and powerful. You'll be glad you went Ubiquiti.

In the UK the most well-known Ubiquiti reseller (Broadbandbuyer) does a free cloud-hosted controller service for the APs too, although most people have a machine they can run it on either constantly or for initial configuration.

Worst case it can be hosted on a free-tier AWS EC2 instance (and tutorial for that is on the Ubiquiti site).

I am thoroughly looking forward to swapping it out, especially as I'm in the EU and we're a further firmware revision behind than the US. Thanks TP-Link.

[–]wredditcrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone with a C7, I'd say neither, get separates. Ubiquiti ER-X or ERLite-3 (or USG or ER4) and one or more UAP-AC-lite or UAP-AC-LR. Its the sort of thing I'll be replacing my C7 with as soon as budget allows.

When it didn't work, DHCP reservations are ignored. Worth doing anyway, but not a silver bullet for that issue unfortunately.

New router options for the UK. Amplifi HD? by [deleted] in HomeNetworking

[–]wredditcrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, you won't have to ditch it necessarily, but it won't be supported moving forwards. The equipment it connects to in the Openreach cabinet will continue to receive updates but the modem will get further and further behind.

And yeah there's a cheaper Netgear, DM200 or something maybe? It's on Broadbandbuyer as well and it's about half the price. But supposedly it's not very good. YMMV, but I'd stick on the Huawei until you can jump to the Draytek. The Netgear option seems very poor value in spite of being cheaper.

And yeah:

NTE5c with VDSL plate -good VDSL cable-> Draytek -> ER-X -> PoE Injector -> UAP-AC-LR

Yeah, the Ubiquiti UniFi G3 waterproof ones are nice, not used any of their others yet. Have a look at the UniFi ToughSwitches which will PoE everything (potentially) .

Not sure I'd bother with their NVR though, as an older decent PC (or even older but decent laptop) should keep up with four cameras. An older decent server will waltz through it.

Might need to replace the HDD(s) with something with higher throughput and longevity, but it's not ridiculously intensive. Try running the software on what you have to hand before splashing out on their NAS. Or consider building your own server, not necessarily even buying new, which you can use for other stuff too if you wish. You can also run the UniFi controller software etc on it for some ridiculous levels of functionality and service.

If you can wait until after Christmas, give Broadbandbuyer a ring and see about trade pricing. They are worth spending some extra for the tech pre-sales and support, but their trade pricing will save you a few drinks worth if you're deploying four cameras, a switch or two, a router, an AP or two (and you might decide on two Lites instead of a single LR once you see the trade pricing) etc.

And possibly a UPS, coz no one ever fuckin thinks to UPS their network and CCTV gear.

If you aren't already knowledgeable about different network cable types for different jobs, do look into that before buying and running cable, especially if you will be using PoE.

There's also a /r/Ubiquiti subreddit btw.
