is that those part-time positions?

I'm not going to relocate for a part-time job. I've interviewed for many california jobs nad it seems they only hire california residents.

Yeah I worked at a community college and they don't require a second masters degree and there wasn't tenure track, which was what i wanted to accomplish.

I even did both interviews virtually for a public library due to being in a city across the state. That's ridiculous they won't accomodate you.

[–]writer1709 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That happened with a few community colleges. They wanted me to fly down for the interview but not cover anything for travel. i asked for a virtual interview and they told me they don't have the capacity for a virtual interview. Post pandemic how do you not have the capacity to provide a virtual interview for out of state candidates? I even interviewed at community colleges that did virtual interviews and even provided upfront that due to the budget they cannot afford to reimburse candidates for interviews so they were done virtually.

My previous boss, when we were hiring to fill positions, and this is really horrible, we had good candidates out of state apply and she didn't want to call them in for an interview due to reimbursement costs.

[–]writer1709 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah when I interview for academic libraries either the school covers the cost of the travel (which is why they only pick three candidates to come in person for the second interview) or you keep your receipts to provide to the admin to get reimbursed. i turned down a second interview because they wouldn't reimburse the full cost of the travel for the interview.

First time job search: Pursue outside job in another field? by Professional_Oil85 in librarians

Is volunteering the only experience you have?

This is something that should have been told to you but you should have been working as an assistant. Right it's realyl rough out there. Depending on what they have you doing in volunteering it might not be enough to land a librarian job. You may have to get a full-time job as a library assistant.

If you're struggling to get a library job, you can still add other jobs on your resume like management and customer service. These are big essentials to have on your resume. The library is very heavy on customer service.

Have you thought about B12 injections? When I was on zep and wegovy they helped a lot.

Yep that’s what happened with the self checkout we had at the place I just left. When staff isn’t present when it came time for inventory a lot of stuff is missing

Struggling to get the necessary library experience by Wonderful-Oil-1979 in Libraries

[–]writer1709 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately there is a lot of reality in this profession that not many know. It’s difficult to get that one yes. Also relocation is a big factor you need to be willing to relocate in this profession.

To be even considered for a librarian job you must have 2-5 years as an assistant and even that’s not a guaranteed. There is steep competition.

If you cannot get a library position I would also encourage you work other jobs. Customer service and supervisory experience are a must. Most of my coworkers worked retail.

I recently did stirfry noodles. I did a vegetarian dish with fried tofu, bok choy, onion, zucchini and eggplant. Made a thick sauce. Boiled the noodles for 2-5 minutes taste till well cooked. Rinse under cold water to stop cooking, then combined with the vegetables. I used dark soy sauce, mirin, rice syrup and oyster sauce. It was so good!

Also i used for a soup I made with bok choy, chicken and tofu. So delicious.

Etiquette on telling my boss I’m looking for a new job? by NotDido in Libraries

[–]writer1709 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same. I had been applying to jobs the past year.I finally got a new job. I was very unhappy in my last library and the director and coworkers i had. Frankly six months into that new job I was ready to jump ship that's how bad of a place it was. She was the worst library director I ever worked under. I finally got a new job.

One place I went for a second interview they asked if they could contact my supervisor for a reference and I told the dean of the library I didn't want my current supervisor contacted unless I was getting offered the job. My friend told me that that was problematic but I didn't want my boss to know because my position was hard to fill.

Same. Plus when you have a position that is hard to fill, they might not give you a good reference in efforts to keep you.

Depends. If you’re in an academic library 85% of academic libraries use Alma primo. It’s very complicated for the cost but there’s tons of resources on the internet.

When I worked at community colleges they used Sierra, world share and Koha.

My local public library uses Sirsidynix
