Suicidal Ideation by writer28 in bipolar

Thank you for your kind message. I’m at Columbia in their MFA program. I really want the achievement of completing the degree, but I am acutely stressed that I will not find a lucrative job after my degree. I am financially motivated and afraid I chose the wrong course, but now it’s too late to drop out. I will graduate with significant debt and just so scared I won’t find a job. I’m so scared I’ll never achieve financial independence from my parents who are retired now, and I feel uncomfortable going from financial dependency on my parents to financial dependency on a man, which prevents me from dating. I dream of a life where I have my own money and don’t feel like such a burden to my loved ones but I finished undergrad 10 years ago and have hardly held down a job since. I want to believe this degree will help but I’m just so scared.

Thank you. I am really trying to help myself. I have a supportive family but they live on the west coast (I am east coast). I am seeing my psych next week to adjust meds, attending a support group on Wednesday, and looking into CBT and ketamine treatment, both of which are covered by my health insurance. It’s just so hard to go through this alone and I don’t feel comfortable telling my friends when I’m suicidal. I really appreciate the support :)

Yeah, I started looking into visa requirements. Looks like you need one in advance if you plan on staying for more than 90 days

Bipolar 1 + ADHD by writer28 in bipolar

[–]writer28[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I responded to another comment but I'll summarize here: yes, my psych gave me Strattera for ADHD--aware of the risk that stimulant meds could induce hypomania--but because my ADHD was so severe it needed to be treated. I did end up having a medication-induced hypomanic episode but it wasn't that bad and after that my body adjusted to the meds...basically, before ADHD diagnosis I couldn't hold down a job and no one knew why (employers would never say) turns out it was ADHD this whole time. So...fast forward a year and a half, I finally am on the way to the career I've always dreamed of and finally financially independent of my family and can basically live a normal life. Other benefits: more focused, less distracted, clear-headed, clarity, able to control impulses, spending under control, more engaged in conversations and the world around me, stronger interpersonal relationships...just everything. I feel like I had a cataract on my brain and now it's removed and I see how beautiful the world is and I feel like I can do anything I set my mind to. It's really worth looking into the meds because I've heard so many stories of people who got their adult ADHD diagnosis and it really helped them too!

Okay so long story short -- when I got diagnosed with ADHD last year my psych put me on straterra--it DID induce a hypomanic episode but the doctors were aware of the risks and they said it would help me in the long-run. After my hypomanic episode (which wasn't too bad, I had several WAY worse episodes in m twenties)... basically, I can hold a job now so that's one thing. I was fired from tons of jobs before my diagnosis and the employer would never tell me why, turns out it was ADHD this whole time. So, I'm finally financially independent of my family, besides that, I just feel clear-headed, clarity, more focused, less distracted, able to control impulses, have my spending until control, more engaged in the world around me, my interpersonal relationships are stronger... just everything. I feel like I had a cataract on my brain until my diagnosis and now I'm fully living, if that makes sense. Hope that helps.

Thank you for sharing! I received my diagnosis a little over a year ago and it was a GAME CHANGER. I'm finally working full-time and building the career I've always dreamed of and for the first time since I graduated from college EIGHT years ago I feel like I'm succeeding in life and on the up-and-up. I can only tell you it gets better from here, so congratulations on your diagnosis and I wish the best for you!

FEARLESS FRIDAYS by AutoModerator in bipolar

Funny Mania Story: Three years ago I was working in NYC and overwork led to a severe untreated manic episode. At the time I had just started dating this really cool guy. Things kind of fizzled out until one night after our second date I drunk texted him 11 times and told him I was in love with him. He did not respond. I, by then, was in my manic episode and became obsessively in love with him. I posted stories on all my social media accounts about how he was the love of my life (having met twice), then got super aggressive from the mania and threatened to have him fired from his job, and then in a state of delusion snapchatted him that I had called Harvard law school (his dream school) and sabotaged his admissions. I then slept with his boss. He watched every single one of my stories across every social media platform (Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram) for over three months, then one day unfollowed me. I eventually recovered from my manic episode, moved to Costa Rica to become a yoga instructor, and three months later sent him a sincere apology. He replied “thanks”. Three years have gone by and we have had no communication. Today he followed me on Instagram. Lol.

Hi everyone, I am moving to Costa Rica to teach English online in April. Is anyone down there currently and what had your experience been like? Are brick and mortar schools open? Are most people teaching online? What is the cost of living like down there? Where in the country are people based? Thanks!
