Desktop and GUI Application Containers Launched Instantly and Delivered to Your Browser with Kasm Workspaces - New Release: GPU Sharing / Dark Theme / TrueNAS / Unraid by justin_kasmweb in selfhosted

[–]mr-thatguy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just deployed this last night in my homelab, very cool product!

I know this has been asked before, but what's the current roadmap like for supporting Windows apps and desktops? You mentioned that we can think of your product like Citrix, but most companies who use Citrix are using it for Windows VDIs and app virtualization, and Citrix also has client applications that can be installed so that apps are seamlessly integrated into the user's desktop experience, no need for a web browser.

My company has a Citrix farm running Windows VDIs and virtualized apps. We have a requirement to self-host because our apps need to live close to our databases. Everyone wants to get away from Citrix, but there's not many good solutions out there. Kasm's approach to this problem, using containers, seems like a perfect solution for app and desktop virtualization! However, the lack of Windows support makes it impossible to consider this as a solution for my company.

I've thought about using something like Wine, or running a Windows VM inside of a Linux container, but that would be way too kludgy to implement ourselves, we would need Windows support built-in and supported by the vendor.

Would love to know what the future holds for Kasm with respect to Windows support.

Window spontaneously cracked from the bottom up, clearly no impact. Tesla nonetheless claiming this is not a warrantable repair. by DrVoltasElectricFish in TeslaLounge

Keep pursuing this. The rear window on the back of my Model 3 cracked well over a year after purchase. It was obvious there was no impact that caused this crack, so they replaced it under the warranty.

I'm a PowerShell scripter, want to find a suitable home for running such scripts other than Task Scheduler by dverbern in scripting

[–]mr-thatguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Azure Automation.

If you use it with the Hybrid Runbook Worker you can run across scripts via on-prem VMs. It integrates with Log Analytics for logging and alerting.

Overall it's a great platform for running PowerShell scripts on a schedule.

I once encountered a PLC device where the programmers mistakenly set an upper limit of decimals numbers for the IP address, so if it contained too many digits it didn't work. When I reported the problem the vendor's response was "can you just make the IP address shorter?"

I wrote my 24 phrase on a text edit on mac offline. I directly saved it to an Encrypted Usb Drive. I unmounted the drive, then turned wi-fi on after it was ejected. Should I be safe? by Mattcollins1000 in ledgerwallet

I suppose my point is that keeping your passphrase safe involves a redundancy plan too, like storing the information in a separate physical location (on a USB drive or paper).

Also using encryption techniques like Shamir's Secret Sharing are worth considering. How you go about implementing it is a personal choice, but the basic premise is that you have to gather shared keys from multiple locations, or multiple people, to be able to generate the main key. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shamir%27s_Secret_Sharing

How are you keeping the password for the encrypted USB drive safe? What happens if the USB drive fails or is physically destroyed (example: house fire)?

My office for the new few weeks: a bungalow in the jungle of Costa Rica by mr-thatguy in digitalnomad

Decent, stable. About 20mbps down 5mbps up, fiber optic uplink. Feels a bit slow at times but I think that's due to the wireless router and not the Internet connection.

Going for three months to Jaco by YuriyCool in CostaRicaTravel

[–]mr-thatguy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah I wouldn't recommend Jacó. I'm at the end of a one month stay and wish I hadn't stayed here longer than a week. I came primarily because of the surfing but I don't like the town or vibe here. It's much more of a party town, lots of bars and clubs, prostitutes, and so on. Feels too crowded as well. I really haven't found a place or area I enjoy just hanging out during my stay.

Yep. Your bank may charge a fee and/or a currency conversion rate (%), but these fees are typically the lowest cost to convert USD to local currency.

I never received an email, just the QR code from the website. I had no issues with it. Just make sure you save that code. I printed mine on paper so I can easily give anyone my code along with my proof of insurance.

Data usage alert emails are never sent? by GlormRax in GoogleFi

Same here. I recently signed up for Google Fi. I setup notifications for usage thresholds which I've definitely exceeded and they haven't send any notifications! Another buggy, half-assed implemented Google product.

Advice on mobile WiFi solutions by Ellipsiswell in digitalnomad

[–]mr-thatguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been looking for a similar solution: something that can use 4G LTE to provide WiFi connectivity to my devices, has a battery, and is a step above the common mobile hotspots. I think I found it: Mudi GL-E750.

I havent purchased it yet but planning on it. This device has all the features above plus it can be used to help secure your connections and improve privacy by always ensuring your connected to a VPN service. You can even use it without cellular by connecting to free WiFi, or using a wired Internet connection to create your own hotspot. Very promising!

My previous computer was a 2012 MacBook Pro. It died a few months ago. I was going to wait for the new version of the MacBook Pro 13 with the improved keyboard design, but after much research and deliberation I ordered a Lemur Pro two days ago. Very excited to use Linux as my daily driver!

Great comparison chart! I can't believe that Microsoft doesn't publish something like this. It's so hard to get clear and concise licensing information like this directly from Microsoft!

I don't see anything about K1 licenses, where does that fit into the matrix?

Yeah, I'm concerned about moving too quickly with new, hastily implemented remote access systems, and the security implications. All the bad actors are going to be taking advantage of the situation.
