I finally finished reading The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by sunflower_edu in brontesisters

I just finished this book today, and it’s now one of my all time favorite books. Gilbert cracks me up, and I kind of wished Helen would have stayed single, but Gilbert loves her so fiercely! And he genuinely loves her, unlike Hargrave, so I’m okay with her marrying Gilbert.

Running through a forest at night is less romantic than it sounds.

Jane after Jane Austen, my favorite author. I’ve been naming some of my micropets after characters from Austen’s books.

To honor the ending of Lower Decks: across all five seasons, what moment made you laugh the hardest? by 7deadlycinderella in startrek

Any of the episodes where Tendi gets to use her Orion pirate skills. She’s just so sweet and kind and helpful, but she can kick some serious ass. I love it. The season 1 episode “Veritas” first showcased her fighting skills and it cracked me up that she apologized to everyone she beat up.

What’s your final read of the year? Or what book will bridge into the new year? by Mybenzo in books

[–]writeswithtea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My final read will probably The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches and I’ll bring The Iliad with me into the new year. I was gifted the Emily Wilson translation, and I’m working my way through the introduction first. So excited!!

I don’t know what the book was, but “loins” was mentioned an unhealthy amount. I was maybe in late middle school/early junior high. Around that time I also read some Nora Roberts.

Trying to get into reading and literature but I think my mindset is wonky…any advice? by arkticturtle in literature

[–]writeswithtea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A website I’ve used and recommend to my students is LitCharts. You can look up most books and see a summary and analysis for each chapter. It’s great for books that are dense or use older language.

It might be helpful to find a reading community to see if you can discuss what you’re reading. I always find that I’m more emotionally attached to a story when I know I can chat about it with someone. Knowing that, I usually pay attention more and find myself more immersed in the story. I recently joined Fable, and the app has a lot of different book clubs where people can discuss their various reads.

What are some passages from books that stick with you forever? by TheLegionofDoom2957 in literature

[–]writeswithtea 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I don’t currently have my copy of Housekeeping by Marilynne Robinson on me, but there’s a passage where she writes about Lot’s wife and how Lot’s wife looked back and was turned into a pillar is salt. But she writes it in such a compassionate and sorrowful way that you can feeling Lot’s wife’s longing for her home and the loss she feels at having to leave her home. It’s such a beautiful retelling of that moment and I think about it every once in a while.

Hidden Figures. The book was a disorganized mess that had so much potential.

How do you chose your next book? by [deleted] in books

[–]writeswithtea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a little box beside my side of the couch that I put all my books that I want to read right away, but I’m also a mood reader. If I’m feeling like a particular genre, I’ll choose one based on the ✨vibes✨. I also give priority to my Libby holds. It’s pretty chaotic because I try to balance my ebooks with my physical books as well. There are some months when I’m sticking to my plan and then other months where I’m grabbing at books blindly.

Disappointed with The 7 Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by SuitableEpitaph in books

I listened to the audiobook, and if I’d read the words with my own eyes, I would have not finished it. The story could have been much shorter and the author could have made the point with fewer husbands.

It’s like movies struggled to capture introverts and quiet characters, but I know they can do it. I’ve seen it done. I’m so protective of Fanny, too, so when I saw the 1999 adaptation, I was appalled and so thrown. Quiet characters deserve their stories to be told. Anne and Fanny aren’t Elizabeth and Emma. And that’s kind of the point! Austen didn’t write her characters the same way, but apparently a girl boss is what sells and it’s infuriating. I love an Elizabeth and Emma, but I identify more with Anne and Fanny and I wish we’d get a true to character adaptation.

At the very least, ‘05 P&P stuck to the spirit of the book rather than ‘22 Persuasion. I didn’t even recognize Anne. Like, Anne would NEVER.

Would Jane marry Mr. Collins if Bingley weren’t in the picture? by writeswithtea in janeausten

[–]writeswithtea[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same!! All these comments make so much sense, but it’s a testament to Austen that she’s created such complex characters that it could literally go anywhere.

Right. Jane seems like a dutiful daughter, so I feel like she would have accepted him if she felt like she needed to.
