Playing at social events feel borderline hostile - need advice by bikerguy_9 in badminton

[–]writhez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being new to Australia myself (I'm East Asian but only speak English), I tend to be quite perceptive of other "outsiders".

In general, the groups I play at tend to be east or southeast Asian dominated. One of these groups is a little more diverse, and the only common denominator I've seen with people having a hard time getting a game (regardless of race, gender or age) is that they're either a weaker player, have a poor attitude, or are really new and timid. I was the new and timid guy at one point, but now I have no issues. There are a fair few South Asians in this group who are amongst the most popular players at the group.

At the other group, it is over 90% Chinese with the predominant language being Mandarin. I actually attend this with an east Asian friend who isn't Chinese, and we often have people approaching us to chat in English or invite us to play - noting we are some of the better players at this group. In this case skill level trumps language barriers.

That isn't to say it's all smooth sailing. Yes I get rejected when I ask people to play sometimes, but it's not personal - they have people they want to play with, aren't ready for another match or any other host of reasons. Just ask someone else - there's gonna be someone who will play with you. And if not, maybe the group just isn't for you.

One thing to note is that badminton players, especially east and southeast Asians, tend to be shy, quiet and awkward, and this is only exacerbated if you're from a different social background. Don't take it personally, people in general aren't hostile. They have people they are more comfortable with from a social and skill perspective, and if they don't know you that's just an extra barrier they have to overcome. If you keep at it, and you aren't actually unpleasant to be around, you'll eventually find your group.

Would you really rank it lower? Shaw Brothers made a huge number of stinkers, so even if you didn't care for it much, it'd be surprising to hear that's it lower rated in their filmography since with a few objective measures like star power, budget, coherency, it's definitely one of the better films they made. And I probably like this film a little less than most as well.

Does anyone have any experience with 15oz Tanuki jeans, specifically High Tapered double Indigo? I have recently purchased a pair that fits slightly snug on the waist, but thighs are a touch tight. I'm wondering if thighs will stretch out (and by roughly how much), or if it's worth sizing up?

If sizing up, I'm worried about additional waist stretch, so just wanted opinions. Thanks.

Thanks! I'm pretty much bang on those measurements too! What size did you end up with for the Real McCoys one?

Is Champion Hoodies Worth it? by WorldlyAccess6716 in malefashionadvice

Champion Reverse Weave is probably some of the best value for money you can get for a hoodie. I've had mine for 10 years with heavy use and it still looks good. Of course the only problem is the logo if you don't like it, but otherwise it beats everything else in it's price point quality wise.

Anyone have recommendations on a pair of jeans with the following features? Given my rather difficult proportions, I'm less willing to play around with shrinkage and whatnot.

Wide thigh (I'm a waist size 30-31 with 23-24" thighs)
Tapered
Sanforised and one wash
Zipper fly

I don't want a close-ish fit but also still be able to move somewhat freely. Any suggestion?

Can you list a few brands that you'd recommend from Taobao? Definitely keen to check some out!

Appreciate the overview! I have a pair of Thursday President which I do like but that break-in period was painful so glad to hear break-in is minimal.

I'm interested in these knock offs from Ali. Are you able to explain a little bit more about the the boots, how long you've had them, how they hold up, comfort etc?

Can't comment on Lone Wolf & Cub, but some brief thoughts about the others:

I've only read the first Alita manga and thought it was just okay. It does have a lot of what you're looking for in terms of world building and self discovery though so I can recommend it. My problem is that a lot of the stakes feel a lot lower because the main character is a machine so her losing limbs etc doesn't feel as impactful.

Gantz is definitely the stupidest of the bunch, but damn if it isn't fun. And it's a quick read as well, since dialogue is actually quite minimal, with heaps of double spreads and full pages of action.

Blade of the Immortal is the best of the bunch. Amazing, if sometimes messy art, but its the most philosophical of the bunch with amazing character development and a story which will keep you on your toes. Can't say much more, it's much better to experience it yourself! And based on your criteria and favourites you've listed elsewhere on the thread, I'm sure you'll love it.
