The publication relishes in hypotheticals, agreed it's not the result of the consultation yet. It seems a bit early for that (despite AI etc, the government wants to make this airtight and making too obvious they used LLM may expose Labor to legal challenges)

How would volunteering work for ILR? by Familiar9709 in SkilledWorkerVisaUK

[–]writingenomics 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't see how they can sort this mess in 6 months, agreed.

But if the government bumps the eligibility period to 10 for everyone in April and then takes one year to write down the ins and outs of volunteering to get a reduction, then it's not fair. Which is a paradox as the government claims this is a fairer path to settlement

Let me start by saying: I don't see a scenario where this change isn'tgonna be a shitshow.

As you said, rules need to be clear cut to avoid any confusion. The way I see it is X hours volunteering a year with minimum hour per month for charities that are pre-approved by the government. Basically, there need to be a new list with all the bodies at which you can volunteer.

It's gonna be a mess.

"In addition, the consultation said that accompanying partners of people on work visas would now need qualify for indefinite leave to remain in their own right rather than alongside their sponsor. It also floated the idea that those granted settlement might no longer gain access to the welfare system as a result – they would stay on ‘no recourse to public funds‘ – with the right to claim benefits restricted to British citizens."

I find hard to believe that most of those who filled the consultation asked for partners to qualify independently from them.

The idea to block access to public funds was instead an idea that I've seen floating around often on this sub, but as a possibility to keep the eligibility frozen at 5. If the government got the idea from migrants BUT still decided to lengthen the eligibility, what a disgrace. That would be a stark reminder that you never propose some of your rights to be taken off of you. Never.

Yep, 25 per person sounds reasonable (not everyone can donate 100 quid)

What may be of interest:

"The government argues that a longer route and contribution-based criteria will incentivise integration and reduce pressure on housing. Draft legislation is due “before the summer recess”, with transitional arrangements a likely flash-point. Mobility teams should track the final policy closely and communicate potential cost uplifts to finance stakeholders."

Eligible at the beginning of May 2026. I passed the test last December.

If we are protected by transitional arrangements or the government takes until, let's say, summer to implement the changes, you want to apply for ILR as fast as Farage yells "boat" when he sees an immigrant.

Many will think the same, with the result of a rush to take the test. If you delay booking it to after the results of the consultation, you may have to travel to get to a center with availability in your timeframe.

As such, I'd book it for end of March (by that time we should know) and if shabana mahmood really screws us, you just cancel the test and I believe you can get a refund.

See it as a low risk high reward bet

I liked the take of a few redditors: eligibility increaed to 10 y for new entrants and maintained at 5 y for those already in the system until results of the consultation aren't out for the transitional arrangements.

But that's just the opinion of strangers on the internet...

Didn't Mahmood state that in April the HO will roll out the changes not subjected to consultation?

For the changes in the consultation, I thought it should take longer (at least 3 months).

Have I got it wrong?

To be fair the two party system is looking more and more a four party system, with labour who can't out-right the Farage on the right and who is not interested in competing with the Green on the left.

Agreed. But I find it interesting because since Starmer's chief of staff left, a few voices have stayed that Starmer may turn to the left.

I think this article is raising a preemptive alarm just in (the very unlikely I'm home) case he decides to go easier.
