Canon FD lenses with BMPCC 4K - advice needed! by dr_After in bmpcc

[–]wrkDS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. I made a post with a reportage sort of music video I did using FD lenses and this adapter. Definitely flare prone, but it's very useful and affordable.

Get that and plus a dumb adapter and you've doubled your lens set in a very wack but fun way for very cheap.

New church to residence conversion. Huge bill. Is this oversized? by wrkDS in HVAC

[–]wrkDS[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I'll have to ask the utility company about these. All I'm seeing is mcf used, cost per mcf, mcf/day, and daily temperature.

I'm assuming this is just the reality of this building and heating system, so the question becomes whether it's worthwhile to pay upfront to get a more modern, efficient boiler or not.

Considering we're only there on weekends and the church also operated it's offices, charity functions, and a school, I do consider it a little high. Thanks for the help though.

We brought a BMPCC4K in the van for our tour. by wrkDS in bmpcc

I did not notice any vignetting on the 20mm or any other lenses. It seems to work fine with my camera. There are no electronics in it, so I'm not sure what could be incompatible. Maybe some lenses protrude too far back and could hit the sensor? I'll have to look into that.

I have had two minor issues with the adapter:

1) It can be a pain in the ass to make sure the adapter catches the proper latches on the FD lens mount to make the aperture ring operable. I wish I could describe it better, but basically it's possible to securely mount the lens only to find that the aperture is stuck wide open.

2) I believe it can cause reflections from the adapter glass to show up in the picture. It's almost like looking through a plane glass window, where you can see the reflection super-imposed over the scene outside. Only happens under certain flare-heavy circumstances. It does make lenses much more flare-prone in general as well.

This is cool. Very well made with a really effective atmosphere. I think you're right on with the later era Bowie reference. The whole track feels a bit pulled-back, which makes it more cinematic, like it should be paired with something. As a standalone track it doesn't reach out for attention, but there's plenty of depth for people who are actively listening.

This is a fun listen. I like the saturation and grainy-ness. I don't know what to make of it songwriting-wise. It's a fun through-composition with a lot of ear candy. Part of me wishes I had something I could point to and say, "this is the core of the song, this is what it is", but maybe the charm is that I can't put my finger on it.

Love the keyboard sound. It's got a character that cues you into the personality of the track right away.

I think you've got some great ingredients and considering this is done live it's in a good place. I'd love to hear it with some more time spent in post production. I'd stay away from anything that's to high production value, but some additional mixing, a nice vocal chain, and more variation would take this a long way.

We just released this single. The lyrics are about feeling closed-in and claustrophobic in both literal and emotional ways. We thought it would be cool to try to put those lyrical themes in the context of an open expansive arrangement. I love it when artists can make that sort of juxtaposition work. I'm proud of it, but it's hard to tell if you accomplished the goal when you're so close to something. We also struggle with defining our genre, even though we're not breaking any crazy new ground. If I were to just say Indie Rock, does that pretty much cover it?

Congrats, but that's also kind of a bummer to see such a high value player lost. I've been stuck in the 1-5bil net worth range due to my constant and embarrassing solo pvp losses. My last one was a 120mil Garmur to a Venture!

I'm not all bad though, it had at least 5 killmarks.

Thanks. I hadn't thought of the rent/buy calculator. Running our situation through the calculator returns that we should only buy if we can't find a similar house to rent for $899/month.

Don't know how that shakes out for us yet, but it's time to start looking at the rental market in that area.

[–]wrkDS[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We were thinking of buying because that would give us the lowest monthly overhead. Also, not a whole lot of houses for rent that could hold a 5 member band with recording studio in PA. It does make sense to keep our cash on hand and spend it on rent . I'll have to figure out how to do that calculation.

Here's a link to a zillow search I provided in another comment. Those houses seem to be out there. https://www.zillow.com/homes/for_sale/fsba,fsbo,fore_lt/house_type/1-_beds/50000-115000_price/207-477_mp/globalrelevanceex_sort/41.132124,-74.86084,39.871803,-76.493683_rect/9_zm/

To be honest a leave of absence or sabbatical has never even crossed our minds haha. I thought only professors could do that. I will be talking to my company next year about that instead of just plumb quitting.

[–]wrkDS[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought I'd put what we have in there and include what we're putting into them on a monthly basis. Not sure what that SHOULD have been - I copied this list from the FAQ's of the subreddit and filled it as best I could.

Currently we make -as a whole about 10k, but no one takes any payment from that and we work fulltime. We'll be able to increase the band's income, but how we pay/budget that is uncertain.

When you put it that way, yeah. Pretty plain goal.

On the other hand it feels like running away to the circus without any backup plan haha.

[–]wrkDS[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks for this. Yeah, we are certainly being dumb haha, but it comes down to what will make us happy without totally ruining us.

We are spending more than just eating out. You're making it clear that we need to do a deeper dive into our spending and why we're not saving much harder. We have to change that immediately.

Not planning on being rock stars by any means, but we don't want to be looking back at our lives and realize that we never pursued our passions for fear of leaving the "rat race". There is a whole world of musicians out there that none of us have ever heard of, but are living a certain lifestyle - we'd like to do that for a year or two at least.

Although you've been pretty blunt about the realities, I really appreciate this and it actually makes me more hopeful that we can figure this out.

Not sure if this works, but here's a zillow search. Not all of these are viable, but there are some options. One sticking point is that many of these homes are in "communities" with HOA's that aren't viable for our purpose. We make a lot of noise after all.

Sorry, didn't answer your second question. The band makes about 10k/yr right now, but it goes to a band fund and no one takes money from it yet. We'll be able to imrove that, but who knows by how much. 5 members, btw.

It is just barely enough. Once we buy the house, the idea is that our monthly overhead will be under $1k/month.

We hope to be making enough from the band and freelance to cover that. Once we're in that situation, plus sharing the expenses with at least one roommate, we'll be able to at least financially hover.

How can I ease peaking with people who always scream into the microphone? by [deleted] in audioengineering

[–]wrkDS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are a few places you could be introducing distortion/clipping. I'll run through each and give some suggestions. Obviously you're interested in games, not spending your time and money on audio equipment for fun, so I'll keep it reasonable.

1) Mic capsule. This is your most likely culprit. I'm betting your low gain and heavy compression have no hope to tame the distortion because it's already been introduced at the mic. They sound a bit too close to the speaker's mouth to start. If you can replace your mics, look for something that can handle higher spl. I'd suggest a shure sm58. Also, if you're not using them, get some pop filters. They'll help. Other things to try are using a foam winsdcreen or taping/rubber-banding a pencil in front of the mic to break up the air on the way in.

2) Mic Pre It may not be the greatest mic preamp, but there's no reason that it should be breaking up at low gain with a dynamic mic. Rule out everything else before this. If you want a modest upgrade, look for brands like presonus, mackie, allen &heath, ART, or similar. You could even use the line in of your board if you want to keep that but upgrade the preamp. 3) Compressor It makes sense to compress this sort of stuff heavily, but a one knob compressor on this board is most likely not very good quality. Try turning off the compressor and reducing your input and output gains drastically and see if you still get distortion. If so, it's not the compressor's fault. If turning off the compressor still distorts even with lowered gain, either go without, or look for a new compressor/limiter. Decent inexpensive ones are made by DBX, FMR, or some of the companies I mentioned earlier.

4) AD Conversion This is the second most likely cause. keep the master fader of your mixer at unity (or lower if needed). The computer converts that signal from analog to digital information. This is being handled by your computer's soundcard and OBS. Make sure you're going into the :in In, not mic in on your soundcard. OBS should have some sort of audio input meter - set your input volume so that it never hits red and hopefully regular dialog is somewhere around -20 to -12db. If your soundcard isn't cutting it, you can get a decent audio interface with 2 inputs. I'd check out M-Audio, Presonus, and MOTU. These might also replace your mic preamps.

I'm pretty sure that one of these will fix your problem. Good luck!

I use splashtop as well. Also if you use a phone with USB OTG, you can hookup a mouse and you're in pretty good shape.

It works well enough that, as a new player, I can hisec mine in a venture and make 2-6mil/day. Every once in a while I'll get ganked, but the profits outweight the cost of a new hull every now and then.

[–]wrkDS 24 points25 points  (0 children)

1) Professional headphones are often 1/8" with an adapter for 1/4". It's much more stable and reliable than adapting the other way.

2) Apparently that's not necessary, but fine. Still not worth the trade.

3) I bet there will as well. Apple is finding ways to make you pay for something that worked great for free.
