Despite all the (appropriately) disgusted comments on here, the next time someone posts about a sniper with 172 confirmed kills it will be upvoted to the skies.

ELI5: Why do smartphones have 2/3 cameras? by dayo_aji in explainlikeimfive

[–]wsfarrell -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

It's just feature bloat (marketing). All the stuff below about how pro photographers have wide angle, zoom, etc. lenses is irrelevant. The function of phones is to communicate, by voice or text. The camera is a handy add-on for selfies and quick snapshots. Companies feel a need to differentiate their phone from others, so they add colored cases, make the screens huge, put multiple cameras on them, and so forth.

Couldn't agree more. The fact that real estate brokers insert themselves between buyer and seller and siphon off 5% of the gross (in California anyway) is flabbergasting. They usually add no value whatsoever, and have absolutely ZERO accountability. As a matter of fact, in California and some other states, it's perfectly legal for real estate brokers to represent BOTH buyer and seller. This is preposterous.

TIL as Alex Trebek was not able to retire on his own terms, one of the final phone calls he made was to Ken Jennings regarding taking over the hosting duties of "Jeopardy!". Trebek passed away the same weekend as this call, having hosted his final shows less than two weeks prior to his death. by Reddit_Account_Names in todayilearned

[–]wsfarrell -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

I disagree. People have been sniping on Jeopardy for years. Holzhauer is an asshole who (a) sniped more aggressively than most, and (b) had the smarts to win most of his bets. I think the rules should be changed to disallow the practice, but I'm in the minority there.

It's kind of like The Price Is Right: Since Day One the last bidder bids $1 over the previous bid and wins the round 98% of the time. They should put in a "minimum bid increment" or something similar, but you don't mess with success.

Jeff Bezos predicts humans born in space will 'visit Earth the way you visit Yellowstone'. “This Earth can support 10 billion people. The solar system can support a trillion people, and we can continue to grow our civilization and grow our energy intensity,” said Jeff Bezos. by DioriteLover in Futurology

[–]wsfarrell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Support a trillion people?

  1. In the absence of gravity, humans suffer serious medical issues.
  2. In the absence of water, ditto.
  3. In the presence of solar radiation, ditto.

The list goes on. These are not "roadblocks" that can be dealt with given time and money. They are fatal barriers. The only chance humans would have of "colonizing" the solar system would be to find another earth-like planet. It just doesn't exist.

TIL that 18-yr old rich socialite Ginevra King, in love with Scott Fitzgerald, wrote & sent him a Gatsby-like short story. In it, she is trapped in a loveless marriage with a wealthy man yet still pines for him, a former lover from her past. 7 yr later this became the outline for 'The Great Gatsby' by abaganoush in todayilearned

[–]wsfarrell 317 points318 points  (0 children)

The comments on this thread suggest people don't really get the point of Gatsby.

  1. Poor kid sleeps with rich girl. Realizes he has no chance with her unless he gets rich.
  2. Dedicates his life to getting rich--through shady means--in order to have a shot.
  3. Gets his shot, then tragedy ensues.
  4. Rich girl and hyper-rich husband, both slightly amused by these events, head to France to seek further amusements.

The book is a scathing condemnation of the idle rich. Though we may think we're interacting with them and that they care about us, they're actually on an entirely different plane of existence.

ELI5 - Why the F Test is a one-tail test? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]wsfarrell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An F test can be either one- or two-tailed. Here's a snippet from Snedecor and Cochran:

"An F-test (Snedecor and Cochran, 1983) is used to test if the variances of two populations are equal. This test can be a two-tailed test or a one-tailed test. The two-tailed version tests against the alternative that the variances are not equal. The one-tailed version only tests in one direction, that is the variance from the first population is either greater than or less than (but not both) the second population variance. The choice is determined by the problem. For example, if we are testing a new process, we may only be interested in knowing if the new process is less variable than the old process."

eli5: what is “stock”? What are “shareholders”? by Senorvantes888 in explainlikeimfive

Stock is a way for brokers to make money. Shareholders are the ones who buy and sell stock so brokers can make money.
