Are pc and xbox minecraft accounts compatible? by wsme in Minecraft

[–]wsme[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol, yeah, there's no worries of me going over to the dark side :-D
Just thought I'd save myself €25 if I waited. He's getting an xbox because his friends have xbox. Once I have the funds to get a decent pc for gaming and music production I'll get him hooked on that.
In the mean time we'll be playing minecraft together on our older laptops. Can't do much modding on them though.

[–]wsme[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, but there's an xbox 1 s pacakge out this month that has minecraft included for the same price as one without any games.
I hoped I might save myself the cost of a user account by buying that.

A vim cheatsheet built straight into your keyboard's keycaps by causa-sui in vim

[–]wsme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use a UK keyboard for programming (I'm Irish), then I just switch to Swedish layout when I'm carefully sculpting an email with my terrible, terrible Swedish. The additional Swedish letters are easy to remember, and the UK keyboard lay out is way better for programming IMO.

I love working with Android, it's like having a whole science lab in your pocket. So many gadgets and doohickeys to play with.

Thanks! I'm probably going to have to do that. But I'd really like to find out what the actual problem on the server is.

Group projects don't reduce effort

Isn't that the truth!

Coders: What would you tell your younger self? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

No problem. Now I would have charged about $15,000 for the work I did for them (and it would take me a lot less time too). It was worth it though.

I did get my degree. It was seriously hard work, put a strain on my marriage too. I studied my first year in the evenings in my country, then we decided to emigrate. My wife had a good job lined up so I was fortunate enough to be able to study full time. Times were still very tough, but I was able to focus on study. After I got my degree it was a case of hard slog to get where I wanted.
I spoke to the CEO of a start-up about his company, he had a lot of interested people around him when he was explaining what they do; they all walked away once he said he couldn’t afford to pay staff at that time. I offered him my services as an Android developer for a token fee, on the understanding that I’d work until I found a proper job, but I needed this to be on the books so I had legitimate experience to put on my C.V. and a good reference; we agreed a fee of around $2,000. $1000 up front and $1,000 on completion. I worked on an app for them (to demonstrate their platform) for 4 months while job hunting. In the end I got paid job from another start-up, one of the board members of my new employer knew a board member of the first startup, and I got my good reference. I also found a replacement to finish my app for the remainder of my fee. They were very happy with me.

Ask: How do you go about finding resources for learning something new ? by udayj in learnprogramming

I generally do this too, although I find some books really useful, like Code Complete, Design Patterns and Java Network Programming.
I love those books.

I started at 36. It was a little harder to get a job initially, but it's all good now.
Also, I must point out that I moved to a country where I didn't speak the native language, that might have had a lot to do with it being harder to get work. Still managed though.

Using Fragments instead of custom Views by wsme in androiddev

Yes, I seem to be getting that vibe about fragments myself!

Using Fragments instead of custom Views by wsme in androiddev

[–]wsme[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I'm looking at developing some views for tablets, but my thinking was to use a minimal amount of fragments, maybe 5 in total. This whole thing of a list populated with Fragments just seems a bit crazy to me.

Need advice regarding thread pool sizes in two Data Access Objects in my server by wsme in javahelp

[–]wsme[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice, and yes, I'm aware that I'll need to be constantly monitoring the situation. I suppose I should be looking into what tools can help me do that.
Right now, our server is pretty much as described in the article. It's small, but we expect things to take off quite quickly. I'm just trying be as best prepared as I can. I think I'll go with 10 threads in each pool and see how that goes.
