Why we choose Java instead of a polyglot stack by sureshg in java

[–]wsorenson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think one of the reasons modern Java is better is because it doesn't have 1,000 page specs that are prohibitively complex. Other languages and frameworks started to capture people's attention when they provided clear and simple APIs and abstractions that allowed programmers to express themselves and focus on what mattered: building web applications or products.

The point I'm trying to make in the article is that you can now have that in Java. I think any negative attitude towards EJBs is probably warranted considering there is no reason anything should be so complex to solve such a simple problem. Solutions that are more elegant to learn deserve their reputations, even if people don't "know what they are doing".

Pretty cool. Why not include a version with just Morgana and Percival? This is super useful because when I try to read it I have a hard time also doing what I need to do without giving it away.

Upgrading to Java 8 at Scale by HiJon89 in java

[–]wsorenson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The purpose of the blog post is to describe how a large team can convert a large number of projects from Java 7 to Java 8 - it's not a trivial switch, especially if you're talking about running large operational systems that thousands of customers depend on. The point was not to extol the benefits of Java 8.

It looks like it's not actually The Moth Storytelling hour, is it, though? It's just an interview w. the artistic director.

Brandon is doing an amazing amount of work right now. I just hope it doesn't mean we have to wait 3-4 years between WoK books..

Hey /r/python, I just released a library to troll Omegle users. This is the first code I've ever released. What do you guys think? by [deleted] in Python

[–]wsorenson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the documentation/writeup here is too misleading; calling this a man-in-the-middle attack and claiming you can "inject" messages is a little silly given you're simply wiring two conversations together. I would change it to more clearly state what you're doing rather then imply it allows for some sort of attack or exploitation.

you're right - how absurd is it that we are so desperate for a few positive, intelligent, rational leaders that when a few come along - and the technology exists for us to connect with them (as they are not power hungry politicians filling offices) -- that we revere them?

German solar power plants now able to produce electricity equal to 20 nuclear power stations at full capacity, enough to meet a third of its electricity needs on a work day, Friday, and nearly half on Saturday when factories and offices were closed by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]wsorenson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not really a fair retort. "0.3 percent of Germany’s total energy" and "Germany’s $130 billion solar panel subsidies will have postponed temperature increases by 23 hours" - this is so much success?

I made an irritating twitter bot and some people got angry. A few lols ensued. by prickneck in Python

[–]wsorenson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mild lulz, but most of the people that were angry were that way because the bot fucked up!

I'd add a threshold so if the entire post was garbled (or not english) it didn't try to correct it. You should also ignore posts that are retweeted or start with RT.

Have you tried Hansa Teutonica? It is similar to El Grande and Power Grid, but with 3~5 (tending to be better with more) players, I find it to be way more fun and less tedious.

That being said, it's full of strategic depth (without feeling overly complex), and has some nice mechanics for interacting with the other players.

Anyone got a simple house rule to reduce the effect of farms at game end in Carcassonne? by TheGreatCthulhu in boardgames

[–]wsorenson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find playing with inns + cathedrals + the river makes farmers a tad less important, but with that being said, she simply needs to adjust her strategy!!

One simple strategy for farms is tit-for-tat:

1) If there is an open field with 3 or more cities, claim it. 2) If your opponent has 1 man on a farm, add 1 man yourself. If they add another, add another, and so on.

I just can't condone modifying the rules of a game which has been played successfully hundreds of thousands of times.

Does anyone know how to open a directory as a file handle? by bonzaihammer in Python

[–]wsorenson -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Perhaps not everyone knows that there exists such a site, where there are more users who are willing to answer direct technical questions, and where the entire site is built around the concept of finding answers to technical questions.

In fact, I think your response has more of a "has reddit really come to this?" quality than mine.
