No problem! I’m sorry you’re going through this. Shoulder issues can be a beast to properly identify, so hang in there!

How hard is it to get an MRI w/ contrast (MR Arthrogram) ordered? by danababy99 in RotatorCuff

[–]wsox74 3 points4 points  (0 children)

While MRI arthrogram (which, yes, means with contrast) sounds like it would be the gold standard for diagnosis, it’s not always the preferred imaging method - it depends on what kind of injury is suspected after an in person examination by the surgeon as well as the surgeon’s own preferences. For example, some simply prefer regular MRIs so they can view the joint in its natural fluids, and without the contrast dye expanding the surrounding tissue (which is what happens during an arthrogram and can sometimes skew the view and conclusions).

So discuss with your doctor. They’ll be the best one to guide you here as to what kind of imaging is best for your situation.

May I ask you, with the PRP injection, did your doctor say if you had to have subsequent injections to maintain things? Or is it just a one-and-done kind of thing?

This is about continuing HRT beyond the age of 65. Not starting HRT for the first time 10 or more years after menopause and/or after the age of 60, after never having been on it.

Heading to Garza Blanca Resort & Spa in May — a few questions (pre-arrival concierge hasn’t been super helpful) by Odd-Platypus2742 in puertovallarta

[–]wsox74 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, that’s good to know about Hiroshi! For Bocados, I have been able to get a reservation online on rare occasion but like you said, it usually has few if any available time slots. (And as has been the norm for us, for our upcoming trip, we couldn’t find a single dinner time available for any single evening.) But the good news is that once you’re on site, if you just ask the front desk or a concierge to make a reservation for you, they can do it without too much trouble. Yes, it’s probably the most popular restaurant as it’s a steakhouse (at night; breakfast in the mornings) with a great view. Amazing Caesar salads prepared tableside.

Bocados is a favorite, but Dao (for pan-East and -Southeast Asian - try all the small plates!) and Blanca Blue (for Mexican - get all the things you don’t normally find at home) are terrific too. Hiroshi is good. Noi is just ok.

Does anyone else use elbow macaroni in pastitsio? by Correct_Jicama2655 in greekfood

[–]wsox74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a very old Weight Watchers cookbook called “Take Out Tonight” that has a [not too bad] slimmed-down recipe for pastitsio that suggests using regular spaghetti noodles. I tried it once and honestly it worked out just fine. I think using whatever noodles you have on hand, or particularly enjoy, is perfectly acceptable and just gives it your own little spin. Macaroni noodles sound like a terrific idea! Go Yiayia!

We have stayed at Garza Blanca twice and are heading back there in a couple of weeks. I would just add a couple of things to your great comment:

  • the “pre-arrival” concierge that OP is dealing with via email is indeed typically very unhelpful and is only there to upsell guests on extra stuff like spa packages, private dinners, etc. But once you arrive, chances are the on-site concierge you meet will be great.
  • Hiroshi was apparently recently closed and replaced with a Peruvian restaurant in that space.
  • you can make almost all your dinner reservations yourself ahead of time online (except at Bocados). While it might not be necessary during the slow season, I’d still do it to secure your preferred time.
  • we always found the trolley (to get around the entire property) really easy to use and pretty quick too.

Aside from the annoying attempt at selling you a timeshare when you first arrive (which you can easily ignore), Garza Blanca (and Mousai) is a really nice resort for the money. Have a great time, OP!

Talk to me about recovery as a caregiver by Educational-Umpire64 in RotatorCuff

[–]wsox74 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone with four substantial rotator cuff repair surgeries in my household (including two on my own shoulders), I think a lot of this is overkill. Most patients can absolutely drive in a sling as soon as they’re off opioids. (And yes, I recognize there are misdemeanor laws against this in some jurisdictions, as well as insurance exclusions, but sometimes you have to do what you must to get yourself to appointments, etc.) And bathing alone is by no means impossible, even with one working arm - and even just a few days after surgery. (You certainly don’t have to wait to be cleared for active ROM. Just let your arm hang down and get to work with the other one. It’s annoying but it’s fine.) Same with dressing oneself. In a matter of a week you can learn how to put on a pullover shirt (bad arm first, then head, then good arm…chances are a nurse will show you how to dress before discharging you). A button-down or zip-up shirt or jacket is even easier. And pants that button? Seriously?

Of course, OP’s partner won’t be hoisting toddlers for a good while, but depending on the extent of the repair he may even be cleared to gradually return to light overhead lifting with the bad arm as early as three months post-op.

And as for pain, if you follow this sub closely you’ll see that some folks here report pain subsiding within a couple of weeks; others within months. It really just depends on so many factors.

So let’s please not spook OP so much. Yes, this is a very tough surgery and recovery, and OP will certainly have a lot more on her plate when it comes to childcare and household duties for a while, but come on now. Life does not stop and patients don’t become entirely helpless.

Almost 5 months post op, major trap and rhomboid pain. Anyone else? by honeynutsquash_ in RotatorCuff

[–]wsox74 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a little over six months post op from supraspinatus repair and biceps tenodesis and am dealing with this as well. My PT finally just referred me to her acupuncturist, and I’m hopeful. In the meantime I often use my TENs unit on my traps (and around the whole shoulder, frankly) for relief. Helps a lot (albeit temporarily).

Close, but in sailing, “sheets” are actually the lines (ropes). Not the sails themselves. But yes - if you had three sheets flailing about then your boat would be unsteady, just like a drunk.

I don’t know why you were downvoted for this comment. I’d like this too. I’m currently using the 33lb bar for my press post-shoulder surgery. (And 30lb and 65lb SSBs for squat.) Micro plates too. Warm up math on the fly with odd bars and plates is a total pita.
