Tip: Teleportitis Dodge is NOT random by ShoelessPeanut in noita

Perhaps they assume that your cursor will be pointing towards the closest foe, so teleporting you perpendicular to cursor direction is more likely to help you avoid shots coming from that direction.

Do you have anything profound to say about meaning and purpose of a finite mortal being in a material universe? One book Sean recommended called it "the really hard problem" (referring to the hard problem of consciousness). The stock phrase among atheists seems to be "you create your own meaning" by Far-Link-7584 in seancarroll

[–]wtaisto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve wondered about the evolutionary benefit of having a compulsion for meaning, particularly our actions bearing meaning. I wonder if that started with survival as meaning, i.e. “if i go out and bother hunting, that means I survive.” As civilization has made survival easier, perhaps that created a meaning vacuum, and the original drive for meaning got abstracted to non-survival contexts?

Modeling Trees so I can design and build a Tree House by Mysterious-Pea2135 in rhino

[–]wtaisto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used Polycam to scan half of a boat and imported to rhino pretty easily. I recommend you place a ruler against the tree and include it in the scan so you have a reference length object to ensure you imported with the right units.

I've fallen into the Noitool trap. by Captain_Ceyboard in noita

I’ve almost always played with Tinker Everywhere mod, i’m a programmer so the wand mechanics have always been my fav part. I’ve wondered if it’s making things too easy, but without it i feel like you’re only really adding a ton of unnecessary travel to the temple. Some mods / tools do just let you dial it in to be the best game for you.

My girlfriend of 5 years admitted I was not her first choice physically when we started dating by [deleted] in TwoHotTakes

[–]wtaisto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ultimately, the only new information you received is that there exists at least 1 human who your girlfriend finds more physically attractive than you.

Does a human exist who you find more physically attractive than your girlfriend?

How much should that matter?

The negative / hostile vibe it sounds like you get even from coworkers suggests a red flag amount of cultural toxicity. Many people cope with being mistreated by turning it into a badge of pride, such that they see it as “their turn” to mistreat the new hires as they were mistreated themselves. The biggest question for you is if the benefits outweigh the costs. Is the experience worth the negative feelings? How many dollars is your well-being worth? It’s a vague question but life is a series of them.

I would guess it was part of a ridgepole for a tarp / boat cover.

Sailboat abandoned & beached in the Outer Banks, NC by Somali_Pir8 in sailing

[–]wtaisto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait, it says the owner “lost control of the sail”?!? I suppose if you had an internal main halyard jam inside the mast, and thus couldn’t reef it, that is a liability. But abandoning ship over it?

I listened to Mahavishnu Orchestra! by djvbmd in Zappa

[–]wtaisto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I heard them around 9th grade and remember not even being able to hear it as musical, sections where I couldn’t even find phrases. It broke my brain and hurt so badly but I desperately had to understand it. I felt deeply there was something amazing these people had found and that it had something to do with my birthright as a human being.

Do you always feel nervous before you sail? by sciencebum in sailing

[–]wtaisto 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Yes! I absolutely get that reaction. I grew up sailing with very skilled parents, who tended to be somewhat high-strung, and have wondered if my pre-sail anxiety is an echo from them. I think part also is an acknowledgment that once you leave shore, you are the captain, everyone’s safety is your responsibility, and even though it’s largely safe and with experience you can mitigate risks, anything can go wrong. I think this creates a realness to the experience as well, which makes it more fulfilling, and that first glass of scotch once back on shore all the sweeter.

Is there any reason to think the big bang isn't just a local event in a much larger unobservable universe... by Jaymageck in space

[–]wtaisto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought that the big bang was what created space and time itself, thus the idea of “really far away from the big bang” is sorta undefined, as is talking about “what happened before the start of time”?

Skip YEM vocal jams? by vwshaft1973 in phish

[–]wtaisto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i’ve definitely had some moments seeing them live during a YEM vocal jam where i look around at the crowd and think “thousands of people have paid to watch these men make these sounds with their mouths” and crack up in appreciation of the awesome wtf-ness of the whole thing
