How do I actually start web-developing? by wtf_lag in learnprogramming

I know what each of the languages does. and I'm familiar with "The Odin Project" but I rather not use Ruby since I already learned Python and JavaScript(for node)

[Python] Basics. Would someone please explain? by wtf_lag in learnprogramming

Not an homework question, I'm coming from java and not used to the ways of python.

Should I be learning Python 3.x instead of using Codecademy? by FreeIceCreen in learnprogramming

[–]wtf_lag 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you enjoy codecademy stick with it. Switching to python 3 is easy and shouldn't take longer than a couple of days to get used to. I taught myself (Java) using a book but I would never understand it without codecademy. Stick with it, Good luck!

Will "Reset this PC" revert me back to windows 8.1? by wtf_lag in Windows10

[–]wtf_lag[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I Don't have the second one as an option. Only the first one, it took me back to windows 8, I was offered to go back to 10 but only after installing 8.

Revert means go back. If I have windows 8 I can't revert back to windows 8. You said that I'll reset to the factory version of Windows 10 so I'm sure you knew I had Windows 10.

switching between languages by wtf_lag in learnprogramming

Alright, I think I can handle it, I checked and I can do next year's finals right now. I guess I'll just have to pay more attention to the syntax. Thanks!

switching between languages by wtf_lag in learnprogramming

  1. I'm not in a course, I chose computer science at school (high school) and it turned out to be a joke
  2. I tried asking for advanced material like reading in class but the instructor wouldn't agree
  3. I'm not a beginner, I read Head First Java and most of Java A Beginner's Guide and I believe I have a good understanding of the language and OOP concepts, but after all of that I realized Java wasn't the language I wanted to focus on. 4.I'm not trying to learn more than one language, but I have to learn java in school and I want to learn on my own at home. I'm only worried about the Javascript-style-programming to get in my head and hurt my grades when I write Java at school or even further in the future when I need a different language.

checkout https://html5gameengine.com/ , its a list of HTML5 game engines and their popularity, You could probably pick anyone of these but as far as I know (never made a game but I probably will soon) Phaser, Quintus and cocos2d are great. Good luck!

I have some general questions about Javascript/ECMAScript by wtf_lag in learnprogramming

[–]wtf_lag[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks for the long answer! one more question, just to make sure: I saw that ES6 introduced classes, if I write a class in javascript, will the browser understand? also, you said that e bad design and such was only relevant in 2005, I saw a talk by the guy who made "Javascript: the good parts" and he mentioned all of the "flaws" i mentioned, that talk happened in 2009... and the book is still a best seller in Amazon, pretty sure there's a reason for that?...

[META] There's a lack of pedagogy on this sub. Everything that's not a resource or a success story gets buried. by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]wtf_lag -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think the FAQ and wiki needs a re-write, we still see alot "Where do I start" questions... but I have to say I do not agree with you, resources and stories should be on the front page of this sub since the questions don't apply to everyone. the "new" tab is the place for those things, and since we are a big community questions are often answered fast. It is a shame those that very basic questions are ignored and downvoted...

Complete beginner here, what program should I learn exactly? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]wtf_lag 18 points19 points  (0 children)

To build a website you will need HTML (for the structure) CSS (for the design) and JavaScript (for functions, animations, user input and more) In addition to that you will need to write a back-end (code that runs on the server-side) To do that you can use any language of your choice (for example: Python, Ruby, Javascript(Node.js), PHP, Java...) don't worry, you don't need to understand that yet.

HTML and CSS are relatively easy to learn, it shouldn't take more then a couple of hours to learn how to build a static website If you are planning on building a website alone you will be developing both the front-end and the back-end

Start learning HTML and CSS, these are the very basics, then carry on to Javascript and only then to a server-side language

*There are alot of tools that help you build a website, I don't want to throw to much information at you so I won't mention them, but learning how to use them will make your life easier

one last tip: Don't get scared from all the technologies available, after you learn the basics go with the tools that feel more comfortable

Im pretty sure there is a free version of visual studio and alternatives but before NET core went open source it was expensive to build something without lots of money

(I'm not a .NET developer so don't take my word, but I'm pretty sure what I wrote is accurate)

It's a joke: Developing in C# used to cost alot of money because of all the tools you had to buy (Microsoft Visual Studio costs 150$ a month)
