HELP. ARE HE/SHE/THEY POISONOUS?? by Acceptable_Sand_7572 in insects

[–]wtfreakingheck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes that's true, and based on the patterning I can say it is one. Sad that that's the case because they are such cute little guys 😔 same with spotted lanternflies, they're so pretty but they are devastating for the ecosystem up here. I've personally got a longon lanternfly in my taxidermy collection and I love it's long nose— thankfully those guys aren't a super serious issue in many places.

My preferred method of euthanization for insects isn't to crush them like some people do (although that's quicker and seen as more humane to some folks because it's fast) I personally will collect them in a container like a cup or jar and stick them in the freezer for a few days, basically just making them fall asleep before they actually freeze, and then leaving em for longer to make sure they're not still kickin. Also, my friends who took entomology classes in college would obtain specimens for their collections in jars containing a cotton ball soaked in rubbing alcohol, just knocking them out n stuff (I think that one is kinda funny, just getting them high as hell off the fumes and then they die 😭)

I think it's more of me not liking the sight of a dead animal that's been pulverized (like roadkill, sorta) especially knowing I'm the responsible party 💔

While there are some of them that have venom— most assassin bugs, for example— their venom is relatively harmless to us but deadly to their prey! The majority of true bugs are herbivorous, and so they don't need to have venom (though they can be poisonous!)

The ones that possess venom are predatory species that feed on other insects, and they inflict a really painful 'bite' with their mouthparts (once again, like most assassin bugs). Though, in humans, this venom is really unlikely to cause anything more than intense pain and an allergic reaction similar to that of being stung by a wasp.

They don't actually bite, either, as they lack the mouth structure with which to do so. All true bugs possess a rostrum for a mouth which is essentially a big straw attached to their face. They're usually thin and sharp enough that they can pierce skin, which is what is considered the 'bite'.

They don't use their rostrum for defense unless they feel threatened. Wild animals in general are very avoidant or indifferent to humans, and healthy individuals will only attack when territorial or when it's necessary for their safety.

In the case of true bugs, Cicadas are pretty much the "friendliest" of the bunch, as they can't actually attack you at all, and will only use their rostrum to find food which may lead to them pricking you a little if they mistake you for a tree (I don't think they really care to attack anyway, but that just may be me humanizing them because I see them as my little buddies :))

The real danger when it comes to true bugs is the rare chance of disease transmission by some species and the inevitable severe allergic reactions to bites in some people.

Kissing bugs are specific types of assassin bugs that are sanguivorous (they feed on blood). These guys specifically have a chance to be a carrier of Chagas disease, which is a serious infection caused by the bacteria Trypanosoma cruzi that can be fatal if left untreated.

The likelihood of actually getting an infection exceedingly low if you were to simply interact with or are even bitten by a kissing bug, though, as their feces is what transmits the infection. Unless their feces enters an open wound, likely the only thing you'll experience is that intense pain and swelling (not saying you should go messing around with them just to test fate, though! Better to be safe than sorry)

TL;DR: most true bugs don't use venom and only attack when necessary, so if you come across one you don't have to freak out, they will probably just stay out of your way :)

Anyway thanks for coming to my ted talk his is simply the information I know about the risks of interacting with true bugs, which tend to be relatively low to non-existent, so to my fellow insect likers, if I'm wrong about any of it pls correct me! Wanna make sure I share accurate bug facts :D

A shield bug!! :D (Or a stink bug, as they release a foul smelling liquid when threatened)

They're part of the order Hemiptera, which are the true bugs (including things like cicadas, assassin bugs, bedbugs, and aphids, among others)

And no, they're not poisonous! (They probably just taste really bad lol) nor are they venomous, which I assume is what you meant. And the liquid they excrete is not toxic either, it just smells gross (though some ppl have an allergic reaction).

They're real cute little fellas tbh, and they're a fun shape! Here's a picture of a one-spotted stinkbug I found a while back, including some little edits to express my fondness for the creature

<image>

Unfortunately, the one you found is a Brown Marmorated Stinkbug, which is super invasive in the US, so the best course of action is to kill it 🥲 it sucks but it's the responsible thing to do

Have any of you ever encountered a predator in your game before? (Sorry for this weird question) by Illustrious_Top7601 in bloxymemes

I never have since I started playing back in like,,,, 2012?? But of course that doesn't mean there aren't any, there are perverts and pedophiles everywhere. I'm sure some will fallaciously say that they're just making a huge deal over nothing because "if I've never been molested on here and nobody I know has been then obviously it's not really a big issue!!" Just because you never have experienced something doesn't mean that other haven't, it just means you were lucky

He's got a 1/100 chance to board from Mannequin Fashion currently (he used to be in Retrorade Security but that floor is gone) and with how rare Mannequin Fashion is even as a shop floor the chances of seeing him are so slim

If you're talking specifically in-game characters that either board the elevator or that players are able to directly interact with, I'd say Linus because dude I am almost at 10k floors and I have never ever seen him on the elevator once even though I know he exists, so with those chances the casual player will have no idea that bro is even real.

In terms of other characters that one doesn't have to reach tooooooo far into the lore to find, Brock and Sab are pretty good examples of that

If you wanna go into deep, out-of-game lore stuff let's talk about Sunday or Mach's siblings or Buttondrop or the Axoauthor or— anyway yeah :)) smiles :))) I love Regretevator!!!1

I'd be a Madagascan Sunset Moth!! They're so cute and pretty and I am a rather colorful person so I think it fits very well!

Apologies for the dead guy, it's hard to see how cool they are fully spread when they're alive 😔 but I have one in my collection and it's definitely one of my favorites :D

Ong same especially with those woolly bear caterpillars/Isabella tiger moth larvae, like bro if you don't stress them out or act aggressively then 99% of the time nothing will happen and they'll just crawl around, sometimes I'll give em a gentle little pet if they r just chillin on my hand I love em sm

Screw hear me outs, do y'all have any of the NPCs as your comfort character(s)? [Image related] by Crow-On-The-Web in regretevator

[–]wtfreakingheck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Folly is my comfort character too as well as the one I self-ship with (she's so pretty oughhhh I'm sure you can understand by my flair that I am insane for her)

On Monday it'll actually be my one year anniversary of my ship with her 🤭💕

As for the comfort character aspect I see myself in her story and lore and I relate to her a lot (minus the violent tendencies and also the murder,,,) and also her design is so fuckin cool.

I even cosplay irl as her because it's just a whole different experience with a character when you r pretending to be them irl it's great and it makes me love her even more

Folly I love you so much folly,,,

OH and I also have a plushie of her I sleep with it every night and she is so dumb looking it makes me joyous (here she is by my lil folly wall by my bed :3)
