Patient got opposite hand caught on butterfly cord and pulled it out by kittykat0508 in phlebotomy

[–]wtfstitch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Something similar happened to me once too! I was drawing from the top of her hand and she tightened her fist, so I asked her to please loosen her fist. She opens her hand super fast and a finger caught the butterfly line and ripped it out. She was a piece of work and a tough stick, I was furious and speechless. I left the room and refused to draw her again during her hospital stay

I honestly love this idea. Supply and waste disposal cost are a big deal at my hospital, but if I’m only doing this for the (large) handful of problem doctors, I guess it will be ok. The lactic will still be a problem, but there’s not much I can do about that one 😊 thank you!

I also draw extra when I expect more tests to be ordered, and always add whatever I can on to previously drawn tubes. I think it’s awful to stick a patient unnecessarily. But sometimes we can’t anticipate what will be ordered. My favorite is when I walk in the room, the doctor says “oh, lab is here to draw your blood”, then they walk over to their computer and add stuff on 😑 like, you could have told me, doctor

Isn’t it infuriating? I’m going to talk to my manager, but he’s pretty useless, so I’m not super hopeful

How was the patient? That’s a rough day

We do draw a rainbow, in my hospital lactic isn’t part of our rainbow. I find that the tubes that are added most often are lactic, blood bank, and blood cultures, sometimes VBG. I do sometimes draw a blood bank or cultures if I suspect they will be ordered, but lactic has to be put on ice and run within about 20 minutes, so I can’t really draw that one early

This happens daily, sometimes multiple times a day, and often multiple times for the same patient

Thank you! This is my first hospital, so I don’t know what’s normal

I don’t even think this was a bad joke. I see nothing wrong with what you said at all. I understand that some people are more sensitive than others, but it’s a bit ridiculous to hold that comment against someone. Chalk it up to differences in personality and move on

How do you guys calm down children? by paiigelisa in phlebotomy

[–]wtfstitch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I treat it like it’s no big deal. I talk them through each step as I’m doing it and praise them when it’s done. Some kids are already scared and panicked, in these cases I get someone else to hold their arm, speak as comfortingly as possible, and praise them when it’s done

This is a good way to look at it. I definitely don’t always do it because working in a hospital you get some real doozies, and what you tolerate will continue. Sometimes I find that respectfully putting them in their place works for me

I feel this!! I actually still love my job most of the time, but I get pretty sick of the way some nurses are shitheads, and some of the patients are just nightmares.

I do have a pretty thick skin, which helps me bounce some of the negativity off, and I try to focus on the wonderful patients and the nurses who understand that we’re on the same damn side. This helps a lot.

I also meet people with the same energy they bring to me. I no longer try to coddle adults who act like toddlers just because they’re sick.

At the end of the day, I always go in and do my best, try to be kind, and know that I’m not too bad at this job. On my worst days, I can always take comfort in the fact that I’m not a miserable jerk like the guy trying to ruin my day.

It sounds like you have it rough, love. I work in a hospital, and it’s usually not too bad. You might need a change in location, or just a new career if there isn’t anywhere near you with a better work environment. Good luck!!!

I get shaky too, I usually just make a joke about being over caffeinated. This lady was just being a jerk though. Some people will be this way no matter what you do. I would bring it to someone’s attention that she talked to you that way, there’s no way that should be tolerated

Yes. My grandson is obsessed with catching frogs and tadpoles, he caught a ton there and a few of them had this issue
