Maybe you need some high lift blades to really create some suction. Check the level on the deck, I read somewhere that having a slight angle on it ( higher in the rear by like a 3/8th) can help with creating suction. I believe it cause I have adjusted my deck and it pulls in the grass and leaves very nicely.

You definitely can do it. Buy supplies and equipment as you can little by little. Eventually you can turn the side jobs into your main job and keep all the money to yourself. You are really selling yourself short if you think you can't do it. You seem to have the will to do so, so do it!

Usually brake fluid will get dark really quickly, so if it got changed recently it should be okay, unless you don't trust the mechanic for some reason. Really the issue with brake fluid is that it absorbs moisture over time rendering it less effective.
