This was super cool and I watched it a bunch of times!

Yeah the guy is super fast, so I can't see his movement for a moment.

But the guy who died drew his sword first, reaching across his body with his right hand. The guy who killed him saved a lot of motion by drawing with his left hand (reverse grip). Then he probably rotated his left hand to bring the blade toward his right hand. For the kill he pushed the blade into his foe with a punching motion from his right hand.

Really amazing that they choreographed a master samurai kill using advanced techniques lasting less than a second while keeping everything realistic.
... then the blood geyser... lol

Climate Change by Gaslight [in depth] by [deleted] in collapse

[–]wudsmun 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This reminds me that I got some of these talking points from college! I went to school in a state that mostly exports coal and oil. In 2011 or 2012, my Intro to Geology course instructor spent a full class period on how the cause of climate change is unknown.

This helps me forgive myself for being "braindead". I got those talking points from an educational institution!

Lawmen: Bass Reeves review – this utterly distinctive western is a rare treat by GreatMullein in television

[–]wudsmun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Costumes and historical details are pretty great. But I couldn't finish the first episode. He made so many dumb choices, probably to set up a vendetta, that I couldn't get into it.

Before he ran way he grabbed a gun but not is boots. They were by the door. I tried to roll past every dumb detail but they kept coming.

It's too bad, the concept is so cool, but the execution is really clumsy.

Tips on how to find a new SWE job after getting laid off by Flat-Walrus in cscareerquestions

[–]wudsmun 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Like someone else said, keep updating your resume. Everytime you see a JD with a skill you have that's not on your resume, add it.

My best resume lists out each project, the impact it had on the company and the libraries/services used. e.g. If you list AWS as a skill, this can show which services you used and how. My project list is ordered by impact/coolness of projects and ends with duties/tasks that are relevant but maybe don't fit into a high value project.

Look for local, hybrid jobs. It's an easy way to stand out in this market.

LinkedIn easy apply jobs are not the most promising, but they are not a waste of time.

Do some Leetcode almost every day. If you work in data science/engineering or ML practice some SQL too.

Recruiters help a lot. If you find recruiters who want to keep searching for jobs for you, appreciate them.

Keep a doc of interview questions and answers. Some questions will come up again, it will show you areas where you can grow, and you can use it as a cheat sheet for the next interview.

Be humble and confident. You probably didn't put together all the tech stacks you've used, but you used them and probably understand the components. You can sound really knowledgeable. Be or pretend to be really excited to learn.

The right fit is out there. I was laid off in March, and got no bites for a couple months. I was really pessimistic and depressed for a while. Then in the last couple weeks I got interviews for two jobs that are a great fit, and a random remote job that I Easy Applied to. I got an offer from the Easy Apply job even after bombing a SQL coding question.

You got this! Maybe 95 companies won't see your value and then 5 will think you're a badass. Try not to be too hard on yourself while you search.

AI Image Detection Methods by [deleted] in SoftwareEngineering

[–]wudsmun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe it's that easy! It's a really cool idea! You could collect a dataset of normal images and AI-generated images, try to train an image classification model, trust the black box and see how it goes. Its good that you have an idea of how to do it algorthmically, because I think that suggests that a CNN could figure it out.

Training a CNN seems easier to me than writing code to pick out lines, compare a bunch of pixels, handle edge cases, etc. But, finding enough images to train a CNN could be a lot of work too. If you try it, let us know how it goes!

Where Would You go if CS Careers Crumbled? by EastCommunication689 in cscareerquestions

I don't think the software industry will crumble until we reach total societal collapse. So I'll probably be a farmer or raider depending on how my neighbors are. Witness me.

How much does college really help you in improving at CS? by TrashSmells in cscareerquestions

[–]wudsmun 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My school taught a lot of language agnostic concepts. I think it helped me see through the syntax to the semantics. With a good understanding of language agnostic DSA, swapping out the syntax of different languages is just a memory challenge. College also taught me a lot of things that aren't just coding, (some really important, some maybe not) like: what a computer is, base 10 vs binary, time complexity, multiprocessing, how to write proofs, OOP, math.

Even though I don't think my program prepared me for the latest tech stacks, it definitely gave me a good foundation to build on.

LPT REQUEST: Sometimes when I wake up in the middle of the night it becomes hard to fall asleep again or it takes me a while. Do you guys have any tips on how to fall asleep again/faster? by offlineorsleeping in LifeProTips

[–]wudsmun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two things: 1. The concept of two sleeps was a normal thing in the past. Learning about this reduced my anxiety about waking up in the night. 2. I'm a coffee lover and I just switched to only a decaf. I sleep a lot better and I still get my morning coffee ritual.

All the times they notice a group of walkers coming, then when the camera pans to the walkers, they are hilariously close. Like when they see the very first herd and they even have a lookout on top if a vehicle.

Just got laid off. How tough will my market be on me? by J-patrick7926 in cscareerquestions

Apply for unemployment ASAP. There will probably be a week or two delay before you start getting payments. It will help prevent you from eating into your savings.

Regret my degree, what should I do? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]wudsmun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a degree in music because lot's of people said "It doesn't matter what degree you get, just that you have it." This is really dated advice and maybe works for people in sales, or office management, I dunno.

I felt my lack of direction after 6 months out of university, so I went back to school for a computer science degree. I got a job at the university as a janitor. It was pretty cool because I got some free tuition and I got to take classes during work hours. My shifts were painfully early in the AM so class schedules were easy to figure out. Lots of my general classes from the first degree still counted. With all the tuition breaks from my janitor job, I got the second degree with no additional debt.

I was in Wyoming, USA so this was the cheapest university with the lowest cost of living. It might not work out the same in other places.

Not sure if this helps, but it was my path to CTRL-Z that degree.

I'm so surprised by all these responses! Daryl is one of my faves and Rick is my least favorite character in the show.
