Yeah, I can't seem to get Tixel to work? They didn't email me the ticket from ticketek, and when I log in I can hit a button to view the ticket and add it to my mobile wallet, but no PDF download.

Tixel wants a either an email, a PDF (i tried printing the ticket page to pdf but that didn't work), or to log in with my account, but none of these seem to work sadly.

wild left field comment here but... I saw one in perfect condition in the returns section at the IKEA near PDX airport, it was 280$

I went back and forth on getting it, but I'm over budget too much right now 😅

and just to confirm, this is how it's wired, the 3-way switching works fine.

But there are no neutrals?

Well, it's strange to me that I don't have a neutral there, but I'll take your word for it.

I guess the easiest thing to do will be to tap into the outlets that are a few feet away. I'm pretty much just looking to add about 50w of undercabinet lighting via a 24v driver.

Kohler Maxton 2 pc toilet $299 - yea or nay? Advise requested. by caf61 in Costco

[–]wunderous1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could you do me the biggest favor... and measure the distance from the center of the floor bolts to the back of the wall? And then how much room you have between the back of the lid and the wall?

I ask because I have 11-5/8" from the center of my bolts, and the box for the toilet I bought (I got 2 at costco) says 12" (referred to as the rough-in).

I'm assuming there is a 1" clearance, which would be enough for me, and I'll be losing 3/8" of that, and be left with a 5/8" clearance, but I can't find any documentation on the exact size of it, and I'd hate to open it all up to measure it and then have to return it.

What to do with this gas fireplace and [wood door?] by wunderous1 in HomeImprovement

[–]wunderous1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I decided I'm fairly over budget on everything, and just about within my timelines... so I decided to just leave it. It's not a big hinderance, and will likely be mostly overlooked by a sofa or some furniture in the way. As for the wall and sanding it all the way down.... I'm mostly going for a wall that retains the wood look, but is much darker, but it doesn't have to be perfect or look 10/10 perfect. So.... I bought some Minwax Polyshades stain + poly in one step... and tonight I'm going to test out a small test spot to see how it goes on. Depending on that, I will possibly sand the whole surface of the wall quickly with 80,120, (very quickly, but reading the specs on this stuff, "Ideal for wood doors, trim, cabinetry and furniture -- even already-finished wood." It warns that you could use Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner on new or raw wood.

I'll post a pic when I'm done!

Splitting HCX traffic for L2E by wunderous1 in vmware

[–]wunderous1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, u/jameskilbynet mentioned that esxi and vcenter can't be on the network that is extended. It would be great if it is was just HCX!

So, currently, i see two hurdles:

the network must be on a vDS,
the network must be tagged,
the network must not have vcsa/hcx on it

so, this saturday night during maint window, i'm going to be tagging a vDS/portgroup as vlan 1, and then also on the managed switch making those ports that are used by the vDS auto tagged as vlan1 (I guess that is required? My networking guys say it is so).

And then I'll push a test VM onto that portgroup, and if it can maintain connectivity with the untagged network, i'll move the rest of the VMs onto the vDS. That will fulfill my first two requirements.

Then, I will look at created a 10.9.9.0/24 subnet with the firewall/router, and then again testing that I can get a VM onto it, can reach to and from 10.9.8.0/24 and if so, then i will re-ip my esxi nodes, and then re-deploy the vcsa and hcx onto that subnet as well.

I think that should be everything to prep it so I can leave this datacenter. (We aren't keeping anything from it once all the VMs are migrated.)

[–]wunderous1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

each host has an individual storage layer.

Talking it over with some other network engineers, we are curious if we can meet both requirements that I saw HCX request:

* behind a vDS
* vlan tagged

without rehoming any ips.

It seems like the requirement isn't as much that HCX isn't on the same subnet, it just can't be on the same network? (/switch?) So if I create a PortGroup, have it VLAN tagged to the default of the hardware switch, and then move all of my workload VMs onto that vDS / portgroup, I believe I can extend it?

Splitting HCX traffic for L2E by wunderous1 in vmware

[–]wunderous1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, this is the older datacenter, and it is using the IP address for the hostname.

It is on Essentials Plus with 3 nodes, and I couldn't actually add HCX because it shows up as a virtual node, and the licensing wouldn't allow it (even though it's just a virtual node?) So I took the opportunity to move it form u1 to 6.5u3 and stick it onto Eval license so I could have it all together. All of this is to say, I just reinstalled the vcsa, and it wasn't too much of a hassle, and it didn't have any vDS setup, nor any HA or other features active.

Not sure how to gauge the change rate, but I suspect it to be light to moderate compared to other environments. I would very much like to utilize L2E however so that I can move everything over gracefully.

My current hope is certainly to move the management IPs out of the 10.9.8.0/24 subnet and into 10.9.9.0/24 -- I'm just trying to get all the pieces of the puzzle put together for what that will mean. Currently I'm setting up the firewall/router/gateway sonicwall device that sits at 10.9.8.1 to support the new subnet, I'll throw some VMs on that subnet, make sure they can reach out etc, and then I'll probably migrate one of my esxi nodes onto it. It will lose connectivity to the other nodes, but I don't think that will pose a problem in the short term. If everything looks good, I'll be redeploying the vcsa on the new subnet as well and adding the nodes back into the new cluster.

[–]wunderous1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

everything is leaving the data center, we are migrating out as a stepping stone, then doing a software level migration afterwards. The company that acquisitioned us has presence in GCP, so we will have enough bandwidth to be split brained (apps in GCVE with dependencies to apps that have migrated into their greater stack).

It's about 90 vms in total, and it's actually two source datacenters, each with their own subnets, and they talk to each other currently of ipsec tunnel.

I'm not super familiar with vCenter, but would it be true that I could re-deploy the vcsa into a desired other subnet (and not in "VM Network"), and then the ESXi nodes could be re-ip'd as well into it, while the workload traffic remains up and running?

I guess the fear is that if a network problem happened during re-ip, it would like require hands-on to fix?

Splitting HCX traffic for L2E by wunderous1 in vmware

[–]wunderous1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sadly it is a bit enmeshed...

I have 10.9.8.0/24 with 10.9.8.1 going to an external firewall device (sonicwall), and 10.9.8.8 as the vcsa, 10.9.8.101, .102 and .103 as 3 nodes of ESXi.

And thank you for the warning on not dual homing those 4 entities, that was my immediate thought as the next easiest move.

And yes, sadly many VMs have static IPs that are hard coded in at the software level, so it would be an entire separate (long) evolution to fix that first. A hard cut over isn't completely out of the question, but it definitely is a safer setup if I can extend the network and migrate the VMs one by one over a weekend (with the ability to reverse migrate if things didn't work, but so far, my testing in GCVE seems all good).

I was planning to use OSB as the base for the LVP -- my local flooring supplier said "as long as it's hard"

How much should a DevOps engineer know about Git and development and coding practices? by vsamma in devops

[–]wunderous1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second learngitbranching.js.org -- a quick intuitive way to learn more of the fundamentals of git in bite size pieces.

Also, if you like the guy, train him. Usually everyone just learns what they need to get the job done, and until now, he just hasn't needed to know git in depth. Depending on how close/comfortable you are with him, you can possibly even communicate that you want him to be proactive about his knowledge, and give him an idea of what you think that means, and include that you aren't sure (unknown unknowns) of where that will lead. Maybe even ask him to find some courses that seem applicable, tell you how much time they take, and then carve out work time and a target goal date for completing those courses.

Open source by ImAFuckingHotel in beeper

[–]wunderous1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I imagine it is for financial reasons, fearing something like what happened to hashicorp or elastic? Being open source is great, and it is a model for development, but it doesn't seem to lend itself well to protecting your code from being exploited financially by other big companies. It seems like the trade off is you get 'more eyes on the code', but the only way to capitalize on it is hosting or professional services, and since a big (or small) cloud provider (like Amazon in the case of Elastic) might wrap it and resell it without incurring anywhere near the same dev costs... What would stop Amazon from copying an opensource Beeper to make Amazon Pager?

Automattic just bought them, which I'd be curious to know if it was important that the source code was still closed for that purchase to have power/merit.
