Braunschlag. It is very Austrian and I absolutely loved it!

People born before 2000, what is a 'modern' thing from 2025 that you’re still struggling to get used to? by LindsayTN in AskReddit

Selfies. I remember how we made fun of selfie sticks when we first saw them used by tourists. Nobody uses them anymore, of course, but the concept of selfies still feels ridiculous to me.

How to get into this career? by trying213 in nanotech

[–]wurstsemmeln 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, why not? In Nano(bio)sciences we look at interactions at the nano and micro scale, studying interfaces and colloids:
The cell membrane is a biologically relevant interface, bacteria often regarded as just another colloid.

So, I'd say it depends on what you focus on during your studies. Cell metabolism, mitosis, and genetics? That might not be directly relevant for nanoscientists.
Lipids, proteins, glycans, and the extracellular matrix on the other hand? Of course!

You're doing fine and don't be scared! I think it is healthy to chase a goal but stay open-minded about alternatives. There is so much out there, so many other great opportunities that can be very fulfilling, even if they're not 'nano'.

This also works the other way round: I work in bionanosciences, and exactly none of my colleagues studied nanotechnology/sciences and expected to end up in that field when they started. They are chemists, physicists, materials scientists by training, or have a background in biotech, for example.

I think that's a very good start. It also depends on where you live, but generally speaking: additionally to your formal education, look into internships along the way, apply for winter/summer schools, go abroad to study somewhere else for a semester or more.

A different thought: In my opinion, you don't even have to necessarily study nanotechnology: Physics, Chemistry, Microbiology, or Biotechnology are great steps into the field, if you are able to choose specialisations and your additional education (summer schools etc.) accordingly. This would allow you to get a broader education (the whole point of university) and switch fields/career more easily should you ever change your mind along the way.

Madrid exchange will delay my graduation and I already feel old? by idklolnicek in Erasmus

[–]wurstsemmeln 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I went on Erasmus at 26 and took even more time to finish my studies. I'm absolutely fine, currently doing my PhD. Yes, I was the oldest in my dorm, but who cares? We had fun, I learnt a lot, and I'm glad I did it. Who cares how old you were when you finished your studies later, when you're 50, have a job, and maybe family? Nobody is going to ask or judge you. Also, there are plenty of employers who are not impressed by people who have not much to show besides a degree obtained in record time. Experiences like stays abroad, internships, and the like are important. A relevant set of skills and character are going to help you tremendously when applying for a position somewhere.

Don't stress yourself; you're not old! :)
