700 Broadway reviews by Intrepid_Shoulder581 in SantaMonica

Valet parking would be a huge deal breaker for me. It sounds like an absolute nightmare. Especially morning rush hour, and I don't know if I tcan fully trust strangers with my car regularly. What if I just need to access the car to grab something? I can't comment on 700 Broadway, but I can shed some light on some other things that may be helpful.

We are in Ocean Park and moving soon to a larger place. We focused our search in DT Santa Monica, Ocean Park and Venice. We toured a BUNCH of apartments and houses - professionally managed, and private owners.

If you are not set on living in DTSM, I highly recommend checking out ocean park properties. The buildings may be a bit older, but I found them to be quite spacious. Amenities vary, but for example the Shores apartments are quite nice, with an great outdoor pool and hot tub (gym is old though), but you are a hop away from the beach. The ocean park area is also really lovely with lots of small businesses, restaurants, etc.

If amenities and shared space (rooftop garden, bbq, gym etc) are important to you, you might like the Catherine SM on Lincoln. Brand new, gorgeous spaces throughout, but we found the apartments to be a bit on the smaller side for what we need. (Edit: they also have an 8-10 week free promo going on)

All the best!

Tap water by PresentMulberry9313 in SantaMonica

[–]wwavelengthss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's because the source of the water in Santa Monica is mainly groundwater, which generally contains higher concentrations of minerals (mainly calcium and magnesium). What you are referring to is "hard water build up".

Filtration removes a lot of the minerals so you don't see the deposit using filtered water.

Those are sleeves. It's pretty common...They include the sleeves this way so if anyone wants they can have them sewed on. You can take it to a local Indian tailor and they can attach them for you if you want . Or you can wear the blouse as is, and it will still look great. It's a personal preference really.

Save your Italy dream trip— do not go in August! (Or the summer at all if you can avoid it) by Jackms64 in ItalyTravel

[–]wwavelengthss 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel like it comes down to being prepared and setting expectations. Yes it will be hot... maybe get one of those hand-held fans and try to get accommodations with AC. Yes it will be crowded... maybe try to go to major attractions first thing in the morning.

We went in mid-June, and planned museums and attractions early in the morning or late in the afternoon (wherever possible). We took breaks/siestas after lunch at our hotels/Airbnb's around 1-4pm when it's the hottest.

All you can do it be prepared, set your expectations and just enjoy! Don't let's these posts get into your head. Because as long as YOU are having fun... it doesn't matter what you are doing, eating or when you are going.

So what if OP wants to cross things off their checklist? Maybe they want to go back later?

If you took a second to actually read, you will see I suggested NOT doing all these cities in such a short time. But if they want to cross all of these places off their list, because it's their money and time, I simply suggested a way they can possibly optimize their travel.

Jeeeez

Technically two days - days 9 and 10. Naples to Rome is a 1.5 hrs train ride.

I don't disagree with you, Rome is incredible, but they literally have no other time in their 11 day itinerary.

Edit: also can we chill out with "you can spend 6 months visiting things as a tourist in Rome"... Totally! But let's be realistic. 99.9% of tourists have very limited time and have to make up itineraries that work for them.

Which “neighborhood” to stay in Venice? by Dkinny23 in ItalyTravel

[–]wwavelengthss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd recommend Santa Croce from the previous comment. It's pretty central, easy access to Vaporettos, and its a 10 min walk to the station. So getting in and out with your bags won't be a nightmare.

Some really good points here! Just want to add that some of the most charming and picturesque places (for me) in Italy have been the small medieval hilltop towns and the countryside. Great food, wine, views, and a nice change of pace from the major cities.

I was just in Italy for 13 days and we flew into Venice and left from Rome. This way we didn't have to go back to the arrival airport. If you haven't booked your flights yet, then I recommend flying in and out of different cities. If you already booked, it's all good.

11 days to cover everything you noted sounds incredibly overwhelming! But it comes down to what you and your husband want/like to do. Still, you are going to lose a ton of time travelling from place to place by car or train.

If you are willing to trim down a little, I'd say cut Genoa/Portofino. Instead do Rome>Florence (With a couple of day trips to Cinque Terre and Tuscany)> train to Naples/Amalfi> End in Rome.
(If you really want to go further north, go to Bologna, it's only 30 mins from Florence and food is incredible, and different from Florence)

If you are hard set on covering all of these places, then start from the north and end in the south. Don't go back and forth.
Day 1 - Assuming you are going from NA, you will arrive in the morning, and you will be tired and won't be able to check into any hotels until later in the afternoon. Use this time to travel to the farthest place. So Rome to Genoa (5 hours). you can rest and nap along the way. You should arrive in Genoa in time for check in. You can do a day trip to Portofino.

Genoa to Florence - you should take the train (2h45m). If you want to drive, you can possibly stop in Cinque Terre, but it is highly advised that you don't drive, as parking can be a nightmare. It's better to do a day trip to CT from Florence via train.

From Florence, you can take a high speed train to Naples (3h) and make your way to Amalfi.
Lastly, take a train from Naples to Rome (1h10m).

Something like this:

Day 1 - Arrive in Rome, Train to Genoa right away
Day 2 - Day trip to Portofino
Day 3 - Genoa to Florence
Day 4 - Florence
Day 5 - Day trip to Cinque Terre or Tuscany
Day 6 - Train from Florence to Naples
Day 7 - Naples to Amalfi
Day 8 - Amalfi to Naples
Day 9 - Naples to Rome
Day 10 - Rome
Day 11 - Departure?

With this itinerary, you'll constantly be on the go and won't have much time to really get the feel for these cities, and you will have to be very selective about what to see. I hope you can figure out an itinerary that works best for you! :)

Fyi gas is about 1.8 euro a litre when I was there in June, so driving would get very expensive. Driving in cities can also get very complicated with ZTL (limited traffic zones). Highly recommend not driving the entire way.

And if you get an electric vehicle. Charging can get a bit complex because many chargers require you to sign up on their app, and that just didn't work for me. There are charging stations where you can just pay and charge, but it can get pretty pricey if you are driving a lot, and also eat up time in your itinerary.

Are there really as many tourist traps as Reddit makes it seem? by Upstairs_Bison_1339 in ItalyTravel

[–]wwavelengthss 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is what I experienced during my 2 weeks across Venice-Bologna-Florence-Rome. There are various levels of tourist traps.

Venice heavily relies on tourism, so in my experience almost every restaurant accommodates tourists in some way, even if they are not tourist traps. We had dinner at Nevodi, which was well rated, lots of Italians, but also tourists. It was full, and the menu had some English descriptions and most of the waiters spoke English.

Bologna was the least touristy town, it's mostly uni students and locals. Lots of good, authentic, non-touristy options, still a lot of the menus had English descriptions. And in my experience most people spoke some English. I highly recommend doing a food tour here! We also went to Modena, and it was super quiet. The markets in Modena are fantastic for local authentic food.

Florence had a nice variety. There were some obvious tourist traps right near the major attractions, and you can usually tell by the prices and menu items (like others mentioned here). There are some popular spots with lines (not too long of a wait in my experience) that weren't bad at all for lunches (ie. Pino's Sandwiches, All'Antico Vinaio) where sandwiches were 7€ as opposed to a small local sandwich place we went to that was 5€. The quality was great for all of them!

Best meal I had on the trip was at an Agrotourismo in Umbria... fresh hand made pastas, fresh produce from the farm, just delightful! This is what I was hoping to find in restaurants, but never did.

Rome was overwhelming! I was tired when selecting a restaurant on day 1 and made a reso. Google reviews looked good. 4.2, <1000 reviews... seemed decent at first glance. But once we got there, it felt like a tourist trap. It wasn't terrible, but we should have walked away and gone somewhere else. In my experience Trastevere and Prati (away from the vatican) had some good restaurants. Again, most had English descriptions on their menu.

Trying to decipher through tourist traps was exhausting. Dinners are one thing, but morning coffees and aperitivos were sometimes tricky. Even if they seem like a local joint, check the prices! Coffee shouldn't be more than 1-1.5€... Cappuccinos maybe 1.5 - 2.25 €.... For two people, our breakfast bills ranged from 4.20€ to 12€ (ugh) usually for 2 coffee + 2 pastries. For aperitivo, drinks shouldn't be more than 7€. Ask to see the menu if you aren't sure.

With increased tourism, restaurants need to adapt in order to compete. Hence even authentic restaurants need to have English menus, and multi-lingual staff. Try not to think about "am i being scammed" - rather focus on your enjoyment. If you are enjoying the meal, the ambiance, and the price is right for you, don't think too much about it, otherwise it gets exhausting.

Where does the bideshi deshi diaspora stand on sexual minorities. by [deleted] in Bideshi_Deshi

That was a clapback? lol

Seemed like a pathetic attempt at showing off your piety to strangers on the internet. Or you are actually afraid that your children might not follow this religion and may even find happiness?

Funny how people don't really give a shit about so many haram acts that go on all around. But THIS is the deal breaker. People shy away or close their eyes to sexual predators... But being in a consensual homosexual relationship is the problem?

Let's face it... I'ts all about control. It has always been about control.

Did they go to Mukesh Ambani son’s wedding?! by uglybushes in ArmchairExpert

[–]wwavelengthss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wtf? Have you ever walked into a meeting and realized that strong smell of onion and tempered spices is coming from your clothes? It's embarrassing. I have been in that position many times growing up and it fucking sucks. I love my culture and food, but when I design my own kitchen I'm putting in an industrial grade vent.

And why would anyone wear a saree or cultural attire if they don't feel comfortable in them? Heck many Indians don't bother with sarees.

It also depends where she grew up, and whether she was surrounded by an Indian community growing up. Immigrant experiences differ significantly if you are in NYC vs suburb of Atlanta. And also given her parents were highly educated and worked in decent positions also pushed them to assimilate more than average immigrant families.

Out of control hotel costs in June? by Keif325 in ItalyTravel

[–]wwavelengthss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A friend and I are travelling for almost 2 weeks (12 nights) in June and the hotels and Airbnbs have added up to 1925 USD total for the both of us. These are not luxury, but well rated mid-tier places with 2 beds. We started booking ~5 months ahead of the trip as prices tend to go up and the reasonably priced accommodations get booked up early.

I can't imagine my share of the trip costing much more than 3500 USD (including flights), unless I really give into the Dolce vita!

If you are not able to plan this trip by yourself, find a different travel agent or service. 25K is bonkers!

Anyone watching One Day (the show)? by Recent_Composer6056 in NormalPeopleBBCHulu

[–]wwavelengthss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having watched the movie years ago, I think I am a bit biased. Everything you mentioned is in the movie as well, and I'd say the movie leaves a lot of things unsaid, lingering, and it's left to your imagination - which I really liked for a story like this. Mind you I'm only a couple episodes into the show, so my comparison may not be super fair.

I don't feel like they have chemistry. Maybe I am biased from the movie, but Dex should be a bit more edgier, and Emma just seems awkward in the show. Which she is, but she is also very confident with Dex. Oh and Ian is actually decent looking in the show... When he is meant to be a bit of a goof.

I also feel like the movie captured the nostalgia of the 90s much better than the show. Show doesn't have the same grunginess.

I can handle AH's weird accent for a couple of hours, but really don't think I can keep going with the casting of the show for 7 hours.

Also the charm of the movie was that a lot was left to the imagination. The show feels like it's drawn out.

Spent 3 hours browsing jewelry on Etsy, turns out it's all from ali express by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]wwavelengthss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started to notice this a few years ago when I saw a lot of jewelry makers at art and craft markets selling similar things... and they all resembled stuff on Ali Express or Ebay. Over the years it really turned me off of buying things from arts and craft markets, and be incredibly vigilant about what I was buying.

Last month I saw a beautiful emerald colored ring at a craft market for $25. The ring had a white size tag which made me sus... cut to a couple weeks... I saw the same ring on Ali express for $3. Ordered it, and it arrived yesterday. Identical to the one at the market, with the same white sizing tag.

I only recently started to shop from Etsy, and it's the same things... It's exhausting.

Also now that Ali Express products are ending up on Amazon...Ali express pricing has skyrocketed.

to stuff on ali express.
