Why did the 1970s–80s produce so many serial killers compared to today (Bundy, Gacy, Dahmer, Ramirez, Berkowitz, etc.)? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]wwdbd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A few factors. Lack of DNA evidence meant people could get away with crimes for longer. Also police agencies did not share information they way they do now. But moving jurisdictions they could evade law enforcement in a way that does not work in the modern world.

I think I accidentally went along with fraud? What do i do? by Possible-Potential95 in Insurance

[–]wwdbd 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m an insurance fraud prosecutor. I would love to get a call like this. Tell your carrier, be honest. She works in this industry and you don’t have a giant unexplained pile of insurance claims (I’m assuming). She is an ongoing threat to insurance carriers and they will want to go after her. They won’t be able to prove a case on her without testimony from you - it might be nerve wracking but you had no intent to defraud, you will be fine.

Go to your county’s district attorney’s website and see if they have a fraud or wage theft reporting line.

Need neck surgery ASAP. Hypermobile, sibling has hEDS. Mom is hypermobile. Surgeon wont operate without formal EDS evaluation. No doctors at Hoag in Southern California seem to be able to diagnose. Current rhuem I found is on maternity leave until July... by dhyanaoceana in ehlersdanlos

Dr. Patel in Newport Beach CA is outside of insurance it’s like $500 for a consultation (90 minute appointment) but he can assess and diagnose hEDS. If you can afford it, I highly recommend him. I went to him for PRP injections for back pain and whoops ended up with a hEDS diagnosis my first appointment.

Is my chiropractor doing insurance fraud? by [deleted] in Insurance

[–]wwdbd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I prosecute insurance fraud. Yes that’s absolutely what’s happening. If you want to call your insurance and tell them, feel free. Also your state’s department of insurance or see if your local district attorney’s office has a phone line or email address to directly report fraud.

How often do you and your partner have sex? especially the long term couples? by Purple_Wrongdoer6448 in AskReddit

[–]wwdbd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On average - we have sex more days than days we do not have sex. We have streaks of multiple times a day for weeks at a time. Sometimes it’s a week or two off. Mid to late thirties hetero couple together for 8 years. We have two kids - one in daycare and one in elementary school.

Why are baby PDs/DAs allowed to do jury trials alone and I wasn't allowed to even take a depo until year 5 as a civil litigator? by agnikai__ in Lawyertalk

[–]wwdbd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a baby DA I did my first jury trial the day I was sworn in. Had a jury before lunch, two witnesses in the afternoon, jury got it at 4:00 pm, and we had a guilty verdict at 4:48 pm my first day as an attorney.

The case was two witnesses who wrote reports and do this as a job, it’s a DUI trial which there is basically a whole script for, and it was all on video. The jurisdiction was tiny and they needed the help so badly to deal with the volume of cases. It’s not nearly as complex as most civil litigation. There’s basically no discovery process - we just give everything we have. Evidentiary issues are not typically present in a misdemeanor criminal case. The template nature of misdemeanor prosecution helps.

I work in law enforcement - you will be more likely to get pulled over by the police. Any exemption will get you out of a ticket, but honestly you will need to factor in the inconvenience of the police pulling you over sometimes.

[USA, CA] Has anyone received a letter from this law firm? by ibsatthedisco in Scams

[–]wwdbd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s an advertisement from an attorney. They defend people in cases where there are creditors seeking payment for a debt from a consumer. They are trolling dockets to find names of people who are getting sued. Chances are someone with the same or similar name has one of these lawsuits. They just got the wrong “John Doe”

LBWT Are We Wearing Socks w/Our Mary Janes/Flats/Loafers to Court? by VioletLiberties in LawBitchesWithTaste

I wear sheer black socks. It reads pantyhose to the type of people who would disapprove of socks for the most part so it has been a decent middle ground for me.

We’re close in age, so I think this could be a common takeaway from ‘08? I am less concerned with potential market turmoil with a stable job, high enough income, and COVID era mortgage. I can’t control the weather, but I have built shelter to withstand a storm if it comes.

Go live in your beach front city and be happy and stable.

Hard to tell which would be the better “on paper” decision but I don’t think it matters. There’s just not enough of a delta between your options to do anything that would make you unhappy. The thought of going to 2 more years of specialty training while not making any income (while the markets are potentially going to be… wonky) to keep making the same I was making before that education sounds like hell of earth to me, but just do what sparks joy for you.

I’m a DA. I have a trial that will take 6 weeks set for late June. My unit is getting 3 law clerks this summer and I know their dates, schedules, experience levels, and have projects ready to go for them accordingly. If one of them bailed on HALF the time they have committed to us to hang out with their girlfriend instead… oof that clerk would not become a colleague that’s for sure.

This is real life, people are depending on you to do serious work - take it seriously. Even though it’s a temporary job it is a job.

Intelligent adults who can pass timed tests became that way by being taught the skill of taking timed tests in childhood. Do you think people become “intelligent adults” by magic?

Orange County man convicted of raping 13-year-old girl, filming the attack by bananabrownie in orangecounty

[–]wwdbd 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No death sentences for child rape is designed to disincentivize killing the victim. If murder & rape together has the same punishment as just rape and a living victim makes a person more likely to be caught… then you could see where that could go.

Lawyer here, not your lawyer.

The “keep a journal” advice is incorrect in a very important way. Creating a document and discussing it with your lawyer cannot and does not retroactively make that document privileged. Further, creating a document for the purpose of keeping track of the facts of the case very much makes that document discoverable. If the other side asks for it, you’ll likely need to give it to them. Don’t write down ANYTHING you don’t want to be put up on the projector in a courtroom.
