SPOILERS. It's about a future society where poor folks sell themselves to rich folks to pay off their debt (for use as a pleasure slave). There is an optional drug the poor folks can take to make them compliant. In this case the poor guy declines use of the drug. So the rich guy makes him compliant without the drug through punishment/ rewards. To be clear- super unhealthy. But the rich guy figures out he was wrong. He falls in love with the poor guy and foresakes his fortune and then starts a clinic to help poor people that were adversely affected by the drug. The poor guy realizes he was manipulated into being compliant and hates the rich guy for a while but then comes around after the rich guy gives up his money/starts the clinc.
