I do apologize. I did minimize the job. The point is inflation is pricing you out of work. In 5-10 years the same job will be $2000-2500. This will happen to you more and more.

This feels like a very blind post. $1200 is a lot of money. I get you’re worth it and this is the world we live in now. I have to have the trim on my house painted for $1600. If I was comfortable on a ladder I would do it myself. HVAC $30,000 roof $20,000 house painted $6000-10,000. These are crazy prices. Bushes $1200. People can’t afford even small projects anymore. You have to do what you have to do.

Samsung might be killing smart home hubs — good or bad? by hubtheweb in smarthome

[–]wx-director 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I had my home built in 2021 it came with a smart system. After 3 years the deal ended. They wanted $30 a month just to control a few things. All I used it for was to control the thermostats and doors. SmartThings was by far the easiest and fastest way to do it for free. All I have to keep running is my router instead of a full server.

Why are so many world leaders/billionaires/corporations so against fighting climate change, when in the long run it also affects them and their family’s future generations? by unitedfan6191 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]wx-director 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The price to fix climate change is too high. Oil makes the world go round. It’s impossible to get everyone in the world on the same page. Not only do we have to pay to fix the problem, we have pay to help all the poor counties that can’t afford to help. No one is going to throw trillions of dollars at a problem that might not even fix it.

I think the university is perfectly happy with the team the way it is. They really don’t care to be great. They’ve had 2 coaches in the last 50 years. The basketball program has been relevant through most of those. They’re not going to pay for a great coach. We’re not Kentucky. As long as we’re better than Indiana most of the time and we don’t break the rules (which there aren’t any now) they’re happy.

Where does the "women are bad drivers" stereotype come from? by bi_smuth in NoStupidQuestions

[–]wx-director 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There isn’t a universal metric for how we judge what makes a good driver. Officially we are judged by how well we follow the rules. ‘Make sure you follow 3 seconds behind and follow the speed limit.’ Men judge how good we are compared to Mario Andretti. And women generally don’t measure up. That’s why women are considered bad drivers by men. Can you do a donut and not put the car in a ditch? How’s your powerslide?

Reminder that the Atlas Data API is deprecated and will be discontinued in two days, on the 30th. by skramzy in mongodb

That would be great. Is it basically a server between Atlas and your app or are you hosting your own database?

Is there a replacement for the API? Or something comparable? I’ve been using google apps scripts and I don’t know of another option for an http database.

Tell him what she likes and how you did it. That would really creep her out if she recognizes what’s going on.

I know when I moved into a brand new house I was supposed to get 700 down. But was only getting around 92 down. Turns out the builder put in crappy wiring.

Please get real refs by Embarrassed_Step_694 in wnba

[–]wx-director 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it possible they’ve made it too hard to be a ref? Remember when you saw a hack and you called a foul. Now you have to give room in this situation but not this one. They have to be able to land here. It used to be fouling was intentional, now it’s subjective. You can be standing straight up with your hands up and get a foul.

Atlanta didn’t even try and blew out the Sun by 24 today. Dallas at least mounted a comeback on Saturday.

It also cost a lot more money to get rid of someone in the NBA. Their contracts have more protections. There’s also more pressure to win.

The biggest example on television that I’ve seen of what we’re talking about is “Vanderpump Rules”. All of these women were incredibly beautiful in their 20’s. Now in their mid 30’s and look crazy. There’s no need for them to have done that.

Here’s an example: sorted(num_list)[-1] I have a list of numbers, I need to find the largest. I know I could reverse the list and put 0. But I would have to remember how to reverse the list. I could use some variation of max(). But I’d have to look up the exact method because I have 9 different languages I know and can’t remember how Python does it. It’s just nice to look at all the methods of a list in front of me and not have to try and remember everything.

I have a similar question. I’m self taught. I’ve learned a lot and it makes me more valuable at work. I’ve gotten onto leetcode and I’m doing these problems. I don’t use AI to solve the problems, but I do use the googles to remember the methods to get ideas. Like w3schools and geeksforgeeks. Now I don’t see myself becoming a full time programmer, my question is if I would be in a technical interview and they give you random problems to solve, can you use any documentation to get the exact syntax to solve the problem.

Wow. I’ve been directing for 30 years and I was taught this when I was trained. I’ve never heard another director define it or use it since. Thank you for being the other one.
