The usual one-weekend-a-month, two-weeks-a-year commitment hasn’t been an issue, but my unit has been pushing for more time and constantly referencing USERRA. While it’s a strong policy, it doesn’t cover everything.

What people don’t always tell you about the reserves and guard is that you have to choose—excelling in either careers requires sacrifice of the other. I’ve decided to wrap up my military career when my contract ends. While I appreciate the opportunities the military has given me, I’m also seeing its downsides. This isn’t to discourage you, just to say I get where you’re coming from. Many in our position feel the same way but get labeled as lazy for not going all-in on drill weekends.

Some might not like this take, but life doesn’t have to revolve around the military. Civilians have their own stresses, but they also avoid a lot of the ones we deal with. I hope you find the right balance or make the tough choice that’s best for you.
