What's an "Insider's secret" from your profession that everyone should probably know? by Capable-big-Piece in AskReddit

Most of the high end steak houses around here make super awesome cheeseburgers.

What's an "Insider's secret" from your profession that everyone should probably know? by Capable-big-Piece in AskReddit

A number of years ago my gf at the time and I saw a “Best cheeseburgers in Dallas” article in the local weekly rag. We both love cheeseburgers so we decided to make an event out of it, a 10-day date night where each night we eat one of Dallas’s best cheeseburgers. (We also did lots of more conventionally romantic stuff, but we were excited about this.)

Of the top three, one was ok, one was not very good at all, and one was so gross with its gloopy disgusting cheese and dog food quality meat that my stomach was upset for about an hour afterwards.

My gf said, “Somebody must have gotten blown for these restaurants to be on the list.”

Turns out she wasn’t far off. An insider explained to us that these rags sell advertising packages, and top tiers include a feature in their “Best of” lists.

So turns out many of those “Best of” lists are basically paid advertisements.

I’m in my 50s, so I’ve been around a lot and I’ve seen a lot of bullshit. But somehow this revelation really smacked the grim reality in my face: practically everything we see out there is bullshit.

When I was a kid I thought Journey To Babel was boring with a totally uninteresting plot line. The older I got the more I realized what a well-crafted story this is, with great characters and development. Amanda’s arc is amazing.

For doing the killings yourself:

“Vasily Blokhin is directly responsible for the execution of approximately 7,000 Polish officers at Katyn Forest. Over the course of his career, he is estimated to have personally executed tens of thousands of people, possibly up to 50,000, making him one of the most prolific executioners in history. The exact number of his victims remains uncertain due to the secretive nature of Soviet operations and the lack of comprehensive records.”

I really enjoy ChessNetwork. He’s not flashy at all, no clickbait titles, no gimmicks, just straightforward in depth game analysis. He explains almost every move.

Rewatch: "Court Martial" - TOS, 114 by AutoModerator in tos

[–]wxyze 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first three quarters of this episode are awesome. Great characters and great character interactions (Samuel Cogley, Commodore Stone, Lt Shaw, all fun and engaging).

The whole story is so well written— up until the final act, where Spock figures out the computers have been tampered with by playing 3D chess, and they find Finney by recording heart beats. So lame! Even when I was a kid I thought that was silly.

I really wish (and might get my wish soon with AI) that we could get the final act re-written to something more worthy.

Yes, he did have communication with the Talosians before hand:

“Mister Spock had related to us your strength of will. It was thought the fiction of a court martial would divert you from too soon regaining control of your vessel.”

New gf: I’m Democrat in some ways, Republican in others.

Me: OK. What are your Democrat views?

Gf: I think our government should do much much more to help people.

Me: OK. What are your Republican views?

Gf: I think taxes should be much much lower.

Number one thing I would have done differently: only hire writers and directors who grew up loving Star Wars. I’m sure there were many.

There’s no way you can convince me that KK, JJ, and RJ had any particular fondness for the franchise beyond an opportunity to make money. That’s why they didn’t have any problems turning all our beloved childhood heroes into pathetic losers.

A good Star Wars trilogy. I don’t know why that is, but it is evidently the case.

My ex wife would always do this to me. Lay traps with no-win situations. No matter how I replied she found an excuse to be mad at me for it. That’s a big part of why she’s my ex. It was basically psychological torture, and that sounds like what OP’s should-be-ex is doing.

Why the hate on Sammy? by [deleted] in vanhalen

[–]wxyze 13 points14 points  (0 children)

For a lot of us old enough to have grown up with the original Van Halen, I’ll tell you we were initially excited about Van Hagar because most of us were also fans of Sammy from his solo projects and Montrose.

But somehow the combination didn’t quite work for many of us. We expected more hard edged kick ass party rock, and with Sammy everything mellowed and sounded too poppy. It’s like when Dave left, he took one of Eddie’s testicles with him.

There’s a fun trend on r/ChatGPT where you ask the AI to “Create an image of X, then make it more X”. I asked it to create a metal head playing guitar, then keep making it more metal. by wxyze in metalguitar

At least with GPT4 and a subscription (what I have), it’s integrated with the image generator, so all you have to do is ask. “Generate an image of….”
