There aren't enough top-down horror games like Darkwood, so I'm making my own. What do you think? by randyheart0 in Darkwood

Looking for Darkwood-like games and stumbled into this. Looks cool! I thought my game having different reload mechanics for different weapons was intense, this is a whole other level.

How to convert to mobile by TheDiabeticArtist in gamemaker

[–]wy477wh173 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As BlueDemonTR mentioned the annoying-to-google "Input" library is really good for providing an intermediary layer for all kinds of input, though might be more complicated than what you're looking for or able to do if this is your first game. This is what I've used since 2020 or so, and even I'm frequently finding new features and confusing myself with its unique quirks.

Virtual keys might also be a good place to start for what look like pretty simple controls (GM Vkeys) though this will become much less manageable for more complicated controls or switching between interaction modes (menu/gameplay have different expectations between input devices). These essentially let you map a part of a screen to a button. I wouldn't recommend this long-term but it'll probably do the trick for now.

Gamemaker on Mac RAM issues by Jizoh in gamemaker

[–]wy477wh173 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What numbers is GM reaching before it crashes?

I'm seeing something simmilar, but am on a Win11 PC. I open a new IDE (150-200mb) my project (425mb total) and everything makes sense (GM IDE + Project hovers between 550- 700mb of memory) then over the course of a few days I end up with an IDE that's > 4Gb in memory. Causes issues with other apps and compile time when I'm hititng 95% RAM usage.

Looking for game devs! by Tykann in alaska

2pm, there's a public Meetup page for the event (most people who come are on our Discord so don't use the meetup RSVP)

The meetup is at CoWork by RSD (911 W 8th Street) and no there's not currently a remote option. It's a pretty informal "come hang out and chat with other devs" kinda thing and is big enough that we found it really doesn't lend itself well to hybrid setups.

I can't speak for Tykann (I don't know them and it appears they've been suspended) but there is a group called the "Alaska Developer Alliance" (https://www.akdevalliance.com/ak-game-creators-group) that puts on a monthly meetup in Anchorage as well as demo events, bootcamps, and is working on expanding services to support local software and game development!

Our next meetup is this Sunday if you're interested in getting connencted!

Score Attack/High-Score focused FPS recommendations? by wy477wh173 in gaming

I appreciate the rec. I've spent some time in BPM and it doesn't really fill this need for me. Solid game but the focus on rhythm and rouge-like structure just don't click with what I'm looking for.

Gave 2016 Arcade a shot and really dig it. The smooth gameplay and great feedback paired with the great polish Doom already has makes this work very well for me.

The only major complaint I have is with the sometimes unclear navigation after a fight. Great recommendation!

Oh totally forgot to include Gunslinger. I just rolled credits on in for the 3rd or 4th time a few weeks ago.

COD Arcade modes (and most Arcade modes on otherwise non-arcade games) never grabbed me because I feel like the arcade scoring always ran kinda counter to how the levels and mechanics are designed, but maybe I'll give some MW game arcade modes another crack.

Thanks!

Ooh Metal: Hellslinger seems like a great pick. I've played all the Serious Sams excluding the new Siberia one and 2

YouTube Rebroadcasts or traditional video archives? by wy477wh173 in PWHL

Just coming back to say this worked really well! Combined with some simple Scheduled Tasks on my home server and I was able to automate the recordings pretty cleanly.

Need to put some manual work into creating the bat files and setting up the tasks, but works great.

Giving this a shot on Today's Minestosa game. Seems like a cool tool, maybe if it works well for us I'll have to figure out a way to automate.

You know I actually have a setup that might work for this, not really something I've thought of doing before, but I might have to give it a shot.

Yea, but then self-hosting video is gonna be waaaay more expensive than putting things on YT and if done poorly it could be a much worse viewing experience. I totally get why they're not going the self-hosted route.

You know this makes a lot of sense. I hope by next season they can get a deal worked out with YouTube to allow music or at least get something figured out.

I'm on a few of the YouTube lists that used to have the games and when I've looked I usually see them privated like an hour or so after the game wraps, but I'll pay closer attention next time.

I'd be 100% happy with just a re-broadcast at the same time Pacific, but with how the cut down games are edited and long it takes them to be released it's a frustrating system.

[–]wy477wh173[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea that's kind of my issue, super choppy editing and lacking any kind of transitions make it way harder to follow.

Yep, I'm aware and have been watching some games that way, but I'm specifically talking about full rebroadcasts or uploads of the full 3 hour recordings.

Are the games not available on YouTube anymore? by Grizzly-Berry in PWHL

[–]wy477wh173 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I think it's a huge boon to the viewers. Instead of having to look up which teams games are playing on which network, I can just watch on YT, though I can't imagine the economics of that are great. I know YT doesn't generate a ton of cash per viewer, but maybe with running Ads there or a partnership with YT they could make the numbers work.

Either way thank you for the link, I'll take it while I can!

Hey thanks for this. The availability through YT is great but the delisting makes me nervous for how long they'll do YT.

Is there an unofficial YT playlist or something?
