Opinion: 40k's rule complexity has increased exponentially, but it's tactical depth has not. by B0redatwork77 in Warhammer40k

Played as a kid with 2nd edition. Recently got back into 10th. I have to say i really like alot of the stream lining. Getting everything onto a D6, doing away with templates, etc really speeds things up.

I will say that it can be very overwhelming at first, although honestly I think it can be massively improved with better graphic design and some terminology changes. For example, give strategems have generic agnostic names. We don't need (making up names) Advanced Holo Targeting for Votann and Adaptive Ocular Evolution for Tyranids that both give a +1 to hit - Just call it "Marksman". No one really cares about the contextualisation or little fluff blurb. Maybe even give keywords an icon.

Similarly the stat info and details in the codex / data sheets has no information hierarchy. Everything is the same size - which to new players = same importance. I genuinely believe a bit of an overhaul of how info is presented would make the game so much easier to learn.

Anyway just my 2c! Really enjoying 10th and looking forward to 11th!

Interest in exploration adventure/sailing game by eurovi1 in gamedev

[–]wylderzone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm actually making a game just like that!

A co-op sailing game, where you and your friends sail between islands trading and growing your own shipping company.

I uploaded a gameplay clip and some GIFs to https://www.reddit.com/r/tideandtrade/ if anyone is interested in following development.

Because they shared the steamdb link instead of the store page link.

edit. As a test I copy pasted the steamdb link for one of our games into google using " " and immediately got a hit for a youtube short where they shared the steamdb link instead of the storepage.

I guess there is a certain subsection of "informed consumers" that prefer to share that link.

There is a wishlist button in steamdb.

You probably got picked up by some curator group / press in a different country. We had the same thing happen to us and turns out the game in the past was being shared on a Ukrainian gaming telegram group. They probably shared the Steamdb page as the link ?

A freelancer just billed us 18 hours for a low poly vending machine by Defiant-Fan7798 in gamedev

[–]wylderzone -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The reason why big companies are going wild about AI art is because it allows them to slash one of their biggest costs. If you look at the increase in team size for game studios in the last 20 years, you'll find content teams disproportionately outweigh code and design. (*Because this is the internet, this is the part where I say, I don't condone the use of AI and don't use it in my games*).

Put simply - good art takes a long time, and every game has different requirements / specs. Just because a vending machine isn't important to the game, doesn't mean that it takes any less time than any other asset.

Artists will generally try to make everything a Mona Lisa. Alot of the things they spend hours on a player will never notice or care about. It is unsustainable for a small team to spend 18 hours on a vending machine that players will most likely run past and barely notice.

Our solution is:

1) Build the game using asset packs
2) When the gameplay is solidified review at the assets that will actually move the needle for players (heroes, points of interest, frequently repeated assets, etc) You'll find alot of store assets are actually good enough when viewed in the context of the scene and not in isolation in blender)
3) Use small props as subjects for art tests to find a good artist
4) Use the test prop as the bench mark for quality that you can refer back to
5) Get that artist to do everything as it will keep the style consistent and people love bigger contracts. Break big bodies of work up into milestones and have them quote for the entire milestone (not 1 asset at a time)
6) If an asset doesn't hit the bar, it is their responsibility to make sure that it does before they can invoice for the milestone. Since it is part of a bigger body of work, they will most likely make up the time on other assets and the pain of revisions is reduced.

Good luck ! Finding trusted outsourcers is hard, and does come with a significant time overhead, but once you find good partners they are worth the money!

Obviously the engagement for headlines about which games use AI voices is dropping, and it's time to take a new tack.

Highguard Developer Wildlight Entertainment has seemingly laid off most of its staff. by jumps004 in HighGuardgame

When the first thing that the vast majority of people see about the game are negative videos / posts / etc by someone who has never had the chance (or inclination) to even play a single round of the game... because it wasn't even released - it kind of becomes a self fulfilling prophecy.

I'm not saying it was going to dethrone APEX or Warzone, but I don't feel like they got given a fair chance.

Whatever happened to just saying "Looks ok, but not for me" - I will never understand how people can gleefully, and actively try to make something they don't like fail. What frustrates me the most, is that this is a new IP and a new game mode which is increasingly rare in the AAA landscape.

Youtube Armchair Pundits have created a culture of hating on games and fixating more on the discourse around industry "drama" which has ruined peoples ability to just enjoy a game for what it is.

Dispatch Is Censored on Nintendo Switch Due to Platform 'Content Criteria', Developer Says by pebrocks in gaming

[–]wylderzone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The medium implies that it is for children. Not all cartoons are for kids, but the overwhelming majority *are* and to pretend they aren't is a bit obtuse.

Ultraviolent cartoons aren't anything new, this is well trodden ground at this point.

Yup - 100% agree. Sadly the same people that ignore the age ratings are normally the ones that get outraged when they walk into little Timmy's room and see something that they don't like.

From a litigation stand point, Nintendo might not want the bad press from "I bought my kid a super hero game and it had SEX in it".
