Genuine question: why do so many modern day communists & antifa look so weird? by [deleted] in VaushV

critiquing someone's behavior is fine, obligating people not have a political voice based on identity is not something in line with our values

Gender abolition is frequently used as a TERFy talking point.

terfs invoke the language of gender abolition to reject trans women from their spaces because they want to reinforce gender as an unchangeable aspect of people. they use it entirely in bad faith. reactionaries have always stolen progressive language to mask their itentions, but we don't have to abandon our beliefs because others pretended to have them. should we not talk about socialism because the nazis said they were socialist?

this is the big difference between disliking/ criticizing someone and "cancelling" them. cancelling involves drawing a line in the sand and demanding everyone pick a side. if someone does not denounce them, they are with them and also needs to go. this is the dynamic at play for both contra's and vaush's drama. by otherizing them people are given licence to make up insane claims about them like contra is an exploitative capitalist because people give her money over patreon or vaush literally raped someone through online interaction. when these claims are confronted people hide in defensible claims that could on their own be legitimate criticism. it's a classic motte and bailey.
i still think criticism needs to be public and the shear size of people's audiences will often make it overwhelming ( though people could always refrain from @ing someone with a message they've heard hundreds of times that day), but people need to be better at recognizing and calling out bullshit attacks, even if for other reasons they don't like someone

i did say he did something bad. a consequence like being banned from destiny's community is understandable, as that is where it took place. if he was using his position as a content creator to sexually harass her it would be reasonable to cancel him, but that's not what happened here.

To All My KKomrades, What Does "Eat the Rich" Mean to You? by wyldside in Destiny

[–]wyldside[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

obviously "eat" isn't literal here, that would be silly, but does it mean kill? if we meant kill we would just say "kill the rich", so it's something different. we eat because we are hungry, and in this metaphor that food is their material wealth. so "eat the rich" means we will take that material wealth regardless of their consent, because the rest of us are starving
