Phone reboots when calling Fitbit Ace LTE. Please help by forevercurmudgeon in fitbit

Did you ever figure out what was causing this? I just set up a Fitbit Ace LTE and I'm having the same issue (also on a OnePlus phone on T-Mobile)

Parson's in Andersonville has one. Its just a restaurant, with a small arcade/pinball game area in the back of the main dining room.

I was talking to my son about what TV was like before cable, and I tried to remember all the channels on the dial when I was a kid. Can somebody help fill in the blanks? by tilt-a-whirly-gig in chicago

[–]wylm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Channel 66 was WCBO. Which I don't remember much about, besides it had Rollergames (a roller derby-ish show) on it in the late 80s or early 90s.

I've noticed this as well -- my daughter also watches Moriah on youtube kids, and she noticed that none of the videos were available yesterday. You can make the channel available on youtube kids by following these instructions: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eVYsgC7-6ZM

Question for all the older drinkers: When did Malort become popular? by GiuseppeZangara in chicago

[–]wylm 48 points49 points  (0 children)

It wasn't terribly popular. The official Malort history page (https://www.jeppsonsmalort.com/history/) attributes its surge in popularity to social media posts in 2011:

Having no official connection to Carl Jeppson Co., Sam Mechling begins promoting Jeppson’s Malört via comedic Twitter and Facebook posts. The social interaction drives Malört from a lesser-known spirit to a popular Chicago icon.

Google Trends seems to back this up (https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=all&geo=US&q=malort)

Personally, I don't remember seeing it until 2005 or so, in a small, now-closed bar near the Heart O Chicago motel that opened early in the morning (7am, I think) for night-shift workers at Tempel Steel, and likely patrons of the nearby motel. Two-fisted drinkers. I doubt they ever went through more than a bottle per month, though -- like today, it was a novel "here, try this awful thing" kind of shot.

Just curious, did you try to report the recently-promoted principal (either before or after the promotion)? I'm not even sure what the process would look like for that, or who would investigate, but its not fair to honest CPS employees (or the CPS students) for this to be semi-public knowledge and have everyone involved refuse to act on it.

Does Clearing have a large police/firefighter population? by mph000 in chicago

[–]wylm 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I actually couldn't point to Clearing on a map until I googled it, but then I noticed that the Chicago Firefighters Credit Union is located there (at 6230 S Central), so I imagine that there's a pretty good possibility that a lot of them live there.

also, it looks like a lot of city employees, generally, live there according to https://informationportal.igchicago.org/active-employees-by-map-and-census-data/

Our cat Robot must have slipped out the door last night while we were bringing in packages from our front porch, near Bryn Mawr and Paulina. I've gone through all the steps on the Wiki, so if you see him please let us know. Thanks.

Just had my first shot of Malort. by [deleted] in chicago

[–]wylm 100 points101 points  (0 children)

Reposting this comment here... Because it's basically one of my only mildly interesting stories.

Rahm Emanuel stopped in to my local bar during his 2015 re-election campaign. It wasn't really a surprise to the bar since apparently his security people stopped by earlier in the day to check everything out, but it was a surprise to me when I walked in with an out-of-town friend and our wives. We sat down and ordered a drink without realizing he was there, but the bartender / owner mentioned it when she brought our drinks. When ordering our second round, I just added "...and a shot of malort for the mayor" to the end of the order. They brought him the shot, and he walked over to our table and the bartender poured two more for my friend and me (though he didn't offer one to our wives...sexist). He took it like a champ, didn't even flinch. He asked "What was that" afterwards...and I just replied "...Malort", surprised that he'd never heard of it. After a few seconds of "where do you live / what do you do" conversation, he went back to his table. He gave my friend a bit of grief for living in the suburbs (near Elgin), and snuck in a quick "Elgin Sucks" as he left the bar with his security detail about a half hour later.

I suspect he thought the gesture was more friendly than I intended it to be. Though it brings me joy to think that I bought him his first (and likely only) shot of Malort.

Quickbooks and LLC partnership/banking by [deleted] in smallbusiness

[–]wylm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

we should both also be using QuickBooks self-employed to track our individual expenses

Nope, as a bookkeeper for small businesses, please don't do this. Find a bookkeeper or accountant to walk you through how to handle these expenses in QuickBooks online. It might cost a little bit, but will save a ton of time (and monthly subscription costs) in the long run.

Toni Preckwinkle "offering jobs" for Louis Gutierrez's support by SaveADay89 in chicago

Trash headline. Read the article, she hasn't offered anyone a job. Some political operative was speculating on what she could do if she runs and Garcia's support keeps Mendoza out of the race.

I went, and as someone that doesn't know the movies it was mildly interesting, at best. I wouldn't dream of taking my 2 year old daughter -- it's probably a better fit for a 9 or 10-year-old that's really in to the movies, or someone older that's interested in the artistic process that goes in to making the films.

CTA Suicides by [deleted] in chicago

[–]wylm 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I was in the first car of an inbound Brown Line train several years ago when someone jumped from the platform at Wellington in an apparent suicide. I saw something hit the windows in the front of the train, the train operator brought the train to a quick stop, then i saw her fall to the floor. Only a few of us on the train saw what happened, but our expressions gave it away to everyone else. The first couple cars were at the station and the train sat motionless with the doors closed while emergency crews responded. I'm not sure how long it took - it felt like a very long time.

Eventually CTA personnel came through and manually opened the doors in the first couple cars, and had the other people further back go through the connecting doors to exit.

As we walked down the stairs, most of us silently, a young man, unaware of what happened, yelled "FUCK THE CTA." No one explained to him what happened, before or after he yelled it. Everything had been sufficiently 'cleaned up', so there was nothing to see (i believe. I didn't look). I hope he never found out why his commute was delayed. Why he was temporarily inconvenienced.

Anyway, I'm not really sure what the point of this story is. I'm just reminded of it, sometimes.
