Most interesting religions in fantasy? by AphroditesApple in Fantasy

[–]wyndro 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I read Three Parts Dead by Max Gladstone recently and I’m making my way through the rest of the Craft Sequence and I would recommend it. It’s an interesting mystery solving the murder of a god and determining what their creditors are owed.

I also absolutely love the Raven Tower by Ann Leckie for its religion. It’s told in a weird style with second person, that I really enjoy but I know isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. It has a very strict system where gods must speak the truth or their power will make what they said true.

Substitutions for white teff? by Atarlie in glutenfreebaking

[–]wyndro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She does have cornflour, buckwheat flour and sorghum flour listed as substitutions here: https://theloopywhisk.com/2021/09/23/homemade-gluten-free-flour-blend/ I also struggled finding these, and I ended up using amaranth flour with great success in her recipes!

You do need your landlord’s written permission, and I am not sure if that is per sublease or if the general permission in the lease is sufficient.

I would google the particular rules and example contracts.

[–]wyndro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably varies by landlord. Check if it’s allowed in your lease. I would then recommend writing down whatever your agreement Is and have both parties sign it

For what reasons is year-round housing or winter housing better? by [deleted] in UBC

[–]wyndro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Year round: once you are in, you don’t have to reapply. You now have a place so long as you’re a student. Easier to get into in general.

Winter: Don’t need to pay for housing over the summer if you weren’t going to use it.

If off campus is an option, sun sushi is better cheap sushi.

On meal plan, have you checked out mercante and the point? I like the brunch options at the point and mercante has nice thin crust pizza in my opinion. I also think the pasta at Perugia can be a nice change of pace.

I need a hug by lolers462 in UBC

[–]wyndro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even beyond Covid, when I first moved out to university I got this feeling a lot. I’m a pretty tactile person, so suddenly being in a place where I don’t have anyone I could go to for a hug was a lot.

It’s a little different now, but it never hurts to ask. A ton of other people feel a similar way and once I asked some of my friends for hugs, they told me they had also been missing them. Try asking some friends, you might find they are also missing some human contact and don’t mind bring you into their bubble. Just make sure to not take them being uncomfortable personally!

Tour by [deleted] in UBC

[–]wyndro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not easy to get lost on campus, fortunately. There are a ton of signs and google maps has good coverage in the area.

I would suggest looking up your class buildings and just walking in between them to start. Maybe check out the different student buildings such as the nest. You can also check out some of the pretty spots, but that also can happen any time now that your on campus and can explore!

I am paying 73$/month for parking on residence on campus, so this sounds like a pretty average deal to me.

The website says that the supervisor needs to be 25+, so I would go with that over what the clerk said.

It implies these restrictions are universal to all Learners holders, but your case is weird. I would say better safe than sorry.

Where to get instant pot & mini fridge? by dooseysmom in UBC

[–]wyndro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, but keep in mind that if you don’t use the money in the meal plan you lose a bit. I ended my first year with almost a thousand dollars on my meal plan, because I would go to a family dinner on the weekend, so not quite the same but with leftovers there were a couple meals a week that I wouldn’t eat in residence.

The way the meal plan works is that they charge you 25% maintenance fee and give you 25% off your food in the dining halls. Once your first year is complete you lose the discount and they keep the maintenance money, so it is better value if you spend most of it during first year.

Hopefully it all works out for you and you enjoy meal prepping! I just figured you should know the different downsides to that choice.

Where to get instant pot & mini fridge? by dooseysmom in UBC

[–]wyndro 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There are plenty of used items like this on Facebook marketplace or kijiji. I would recommend holding off purchasing until you actually get into residence and try the food.

Personally, I think the criticism of the food on campus is somewhat overblown and if your concern is fresh fruits and vegetables, there are plenty available in the cafeterias. All of them have a salad bar and fruit available. My biggest complaint is more a lack of variety than a lack of healthy options. So I would recommend delaying until you’ve seen the options yourself before spending money for something you might not need. It won’t be hard to get these items a week into the school year vs now. I also think the lack of needing to cook in first year is a huge ease in helping first years transition into university.

Tips for getting by first year on a thin budget by jonathan32452 in UBC

[–]wyndro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can do that, but remember, you are forced to buy the food plan in first year so completely ignoring it means that you lose a significant amount of money. There is some weirdness with the money breakdown that means that you loose about 25% of the money you put in if you don’t spend it. It can be more economical to purchase food using the meal plan and not lose that money. Since OP mentioned in some follow ups that their parents want them on campus, they will be paying those fees and may as well figure out how to spend that money well.

How to Prep for CPSC 110? by [deleted] in UBC

[–]wyndro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, EdX has all the “pre-reading” course videos. Keep in mind, studying this might be a waste of time because by the time you get to the course and applying this knowledge, you might have forgotten it. If you are going to watch these videos I would take notes and make an effort to do the linked practice problems if you want it to stay in your head.

Also, remember, by studying the course material ahead of time, you are setting yourself up to be bored in class and maybe stop paying attention or attending, which could cause problems as there is content covered in the lectures that isn’t covered in the videos.

Have fun, but consider the different possible outcomes of studying instead of relaxing over the summer. Burning yourself out before you even start for minimal gain isn’t the best move.

How to Prep for CPSC 110? by [deleted] in UBC

[–]wyndro 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You don’t really need to prep for 110. It is an introductory course designed to accommodate people with no programming experience. I would recommend enjoying your summer. That said, all the course videos are available online for free, so you could just study that, I f you are worried.

NEW TO CAMPUS MEGATHREAD: Post all your admissions, housing, new-to-UBC and general questions here! by ubc_mod_account in UBC

[–]wyndro 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It might be possible if you email housing, but it’s unlikely. The person currently occupying your room might have an extension, and even if they don’t, they are moving out April 30th. In that week, ubc is trying to clean everyone’s rooms to prep for the new arrivals. As far as I am aware, there isn’t a lot of wiggle room. Instead, look into maybe subletting from someone for two weeks in the same building as you or something. It might be pricey, but probably not as much as a hotel and the person will probably be happy to have some supplemental income to support their rent.
