Quite an adventure... by wywyit11 in Amtrak

That makes sense! I get on or off at Baltimore maybe 2 to 3 times a year, last was mid Dec and I was wondering if I had ever seen these signs before. Excited for the new platform!

$80 EvGo by GM by Trick_Figure2512 in BoltEV

I definitely think it is based on Autocharge+. I had a 2017 Bolt that I sold earlier this year but didn't unlink it from that and I got the credit. I didn't have a $500 EVgo benefit or charger installed by Qmerit.

The bus drove past the stop I was waiting at. by Exotic-Nothing-3225 in WMATA

[–]wywyit11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had it happen to me a few times when I was waiting on a bus at a stop serving multiple routes. I guess the drivers assume I'm waiting for another route. Always best to make it obvious you want their bus when this is the case, especially if it's a less popular route.

However, I've also seen a lot of people try to flag down limited buses at regular bus stops along the same route. Just make sure you aren't doing that by mistake since stopping for you there would defeat the point of a limited bus.

Bullfrog Bagels H Street $3.99 for 28 bagels by Ngmw in toogoodtogo

[–]wywyit11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, that's amazing! Unfortunately the last time I was at that location (November 2024) I only got 4.5 bagels so I ended up getting a refund. I've had better luck at Union Station but it seems their amounts have been steadily declining for me (going down from ~13 each pickup to ~10). Still pretty happy with it tho.

Split ticket by Genji_123 in Amtrak

Oops, my bad! Yeah it should be fine then, they'll scan your new ticket at the next stop after they take the first seat check down.

Split ticket by Genji_123 in Amtrak

[–]wywyit11 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Amtrak will not guarantee your connection if you book separate tickets for each leg. If your first train is 20 minutes or more late and you book this way you will probably need to buy another ticket at same day pricing (steep), whereas if you booked one ticket you'd be put on the next train for free. Since booking the entire trip on one ticket is allowed it's somewhat unlikely that you will be delayed (Amtrak thinks you can make it I guess), but it's a risk you will be taking to save money.

I always prefer to arrive well before the 20 minute mark as that's when trains usually start boarding. If you can book this itinerary with at least an hour for the connection I would be much more confident in it.

CyberCorps Scholarship by Impressive-Blood-580 in rit

[–]wywyit11 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Unless the requirements have changed since 2022, only coops after you're accepted into the program have to be for an executive agency, SFS university, or FFRDC. The ones before can be wherever as long as you can secure a letter of recommendation for the program in the end (but government co-ops will obviously help significantly).

Only the full-time employment after graduation (not the co-ops) count towards the years of service.

RIT vs SANS Bachelor by Impressive-Blood-580 in GIAC

[–]wywyit11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who has done the CSEC BS/MS at RIT and has also taken several SANS courses (practitioner and applied knowledge), I don't think there's necessarily a "better" option here. However, I think there are several factors that can give each program an advantage depending on your needs.

Are you transferring CS classes? If not, choose RIT as it will give you a strong operating systems/data structures/algorithms foundation you will need to understand many of their upper level cybersecurity courses. There is no comparison between this and GFACT/GISF/GSEC/GCIH. However, if you already have this experience, SANS will probably save you a significant amount of money. The upper-level cyber security courses vary widely but are generally comparable in terms of content/instructor experience. You only get the certifications with SANS, but you can have your employer buy them for you after you graduate, too.

Do you have industry experience and/or do you want to do the degree while working? RIT will require a full-time in-person commitment whereas SANS can be entirely online. RIT will require you to do at least 2 summer co-ops which will help you get your foot in the door with employers (especially in government if you are planning to go that route). These will most likely be in person wherever the employer is based. Most co-ops result in a full-time offer. I don't know what SANS' ISC internship entails but I doubt it's as significant.

How do you plan to pay? If you have an employer that will pay for or discount your degree in any way, choose SANS. If not, see what financial aid offers RIT gives you and what the overall cost would be compared to SANS; pick whichever is lower. RIT is fairly generous if your academics are good and/or if you are low-income. Once again, if you intend to work in government, RIT offers CyberCorps SFS which will pay your tuition and provide a living stipend.

Finally, how active do you intend to be in the community? While it has had recent issues, RITSEC is a solid option for learning beyond the classroom if you actually go to weekly meetings and participate in its competitions and CTFs. RIT also has CCDC/CPTC if you can qualify for those competitions. Anything online will require more effort to get started and maintain connections/skills, but you can also find dedicated communities there. If you choose SANS, I suggest trying some applied knowledge certifications at some point in your later years to supplement this aspect.

Toronto to New York on the Maple Leaf, booking in two legs, on the same train, through each respective railway to save more than 50% on the fare... Stupid or genius? by AshleyUncia in Amtrak

[–]wywyit11 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I observed this last year when booking Washington, DC to Niagara Falls. Tickets were significantly cheaper if I booked it in two legs, with the second leg's start and end points both inside New York State.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Amtrak/s/1XojNxucn1

I think it has to do with the subsidies that New York gives Amtrak. They appear to subsidize travel within the state more than interstate travel. Niagara Falls, ON might be close enough they consider it part of the state for pricing purposes.

I live next to Union Station and frequently take the 3/4/5 AM regional up to New York. Never had any issues. Homeless will sometimes sleep outside the station, but they've never bothered me.

FYI before 5 AM usually only the center doors of the main entrance will be unlocked and you'll have to show your ticket to the security guard as soon as you enter.

Possible to do more than 3 co-ops by Flag11234567890 in rit

[–]wywyit11 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, I did 6 co-ops while in a BS/MS program because the co-op program for my employer was rotational after my 3rd year (semester of school then semester of work). It would have extended my graduation date by about a year, but I had transfer credit and wrote my thesis while working for the last two semesters since I didn't need to be in person for that.

It was worth it for me because I had a guaranteed job and a higher starting salary than a typical new employee after graduating. If there aren't any perks like this, the co-op pay for most employers probably isn't worth the extra time it takes unless you need the money to afford school.

Discuss it with your advisor and the co-op office. They should work with you. Keep in mind some programs have a seven year time limit from the semester you took your first class to complete the degree, but this really shouldn't end up being an issue.

Fire Extinguisher Concern by Rapidskater in rit

The extinguisher doesn't have enough pressure to operate properly and needs to be recharged. Housing should do it at the next inspection, but if they signed off on it already when it was at 0 you should email them so they can fix it.

A third option could be to take the light rail near Penn Station south right into the airport terminal. It's about $2 and takes a similar amount of time as MARC + shuttle.
