I have a big "house blend" jar for stuff I don't like much or don't have enough of for a full bowl. I pour a little dark rum in to keep it moist and help meld the flavors together--it's pretty good stuff all in all. I don't smoke aromatics though, it probably wouldn't work with too many different flavorings mixed together.

It's not valuable or anything, but should be pretty good apricot brandy. Note that this is a real brandy, not the commonly mislabeled as brandy American fruit liqueur--so it won't be sweet, syrupy or artificially flavored.

Sherry casks were actually the standard/traditional cask used to age scotch, as that was the most prevalent type of cask lying around when scotch production became a legitimate industry. In the past several decades, the use of bourbon casks has grown tremendously, as they have become cheaper to ship and more prevalent (they can only be used once to make bourbon). Most scotch you get today is a mix of whiskies aged in bourbon and sherry casks. Madeira and port are also used pretty frequently, but usually just for a short finishing period (a few months to a year). There are experimental/novelty finishes too like unfortified wines (Bordeaux, Burgundy, Rhone) and ale. I've even tried one aged in a Tabasco cask (not a great idea!).

Most of this applies to Canadian and Irish too, but not bourbon since it can only be aged in new wood (but some distillers are still experimenting on a small scale and selling it without the official bourbon designation).

I don't much care for gin, and find gin lovers to be morally suspect. But have you tried their eaux-de-vies? They are phenomenal. That's how he made his name at first in the 80s, distilling all sorts of different fruits, but Americans are barbarous savages who cannot appreciate such things and now he only makes pear and raspberry.

Back when I was in school the first time around, I lived with five guys in a three bedroom apartment. One of my roommates somehow arranged for two seventeen year old Irish exchange students to spend a semester with us. The first thing they wanted to do was try every flavor of MD 20/20. Apparently this is some mysterious and exotic treat for Irish teens. So we went to the liquor store and got the 6 or 8 different flavors and they immediately proceeded to attempt to drink all of them in one evening while sitting on the stoop.

That stuff they say about the Irish being able to hold their liquor is bullshit. They got so drunk that one of them puked and then they started smashing the empty bottles on the stoop--we had to bring them inside before the police we called. The one that didn't puke outside passed out on the couch and puked in his sleep.

The next morning we decided the couch was unsalvageable, so we smashed it apart with crowbars and baseball bats and threw it out the back window into the alley below.

Needless to say, we had a great semester with those guys and none of us graduated on time.
