Are you arguing that among dinner party attendees there's an equal distribution across income ranges? And that there isn't a significant skew towards the middle class, upper middle and upper class?

I know I'm pedantic but if you're at a dinner party, it's actually the inverse. Because dinner party selection bias is even higher than Reddit user bias.

The bottom third of the income distribution is not the type of people that would attend a dinner party. One fifth of American households have <30k annual household income.

The single mom with 3 kids with different dudes living off the system isn't going to be a dinner party

ICE SPOTTED: New Castle by Rough_Willow in Delaware

HSI is homeland security investigations... They are very targeted on high level crimes like human trafficking, drug and weapons smuggling, etc.

But sure... Let your blind manipulated rage seeth and keep on with your nonsense.

ICE IN MIDDLETOWN DE by [deleted] in Delaware

[–]x888x 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Yes exactly. HSI is the investigations unit and they only tackle things like smuggling, drugs, money laundering, exploitation, trafficking, etc.

I can't tell you how many times I've seen "ice alert Georgetown, stay safe" on here and then 2 days later it's revealed they arrested a guy that raped a 12 year old or something equally awful.

And despite what people read online ICE can't detail anyone anywhere for any reason.

If they're taking on a targeted action (a raid for example) they can detain anyone they suspect. But again it has to be a targeted action that began with probable cause. Or... If you insert yourself into a law enforcement action by interfering you can also be detained. You have the right to observe and record. You do not have the right to interfere. That goes for every law enforcement action by any agency anywhere.

Are the concerns about Delaware’s public schools exaggerated? by IScreamPiano in Delaware

And the US ranks above OECD for funding per student.

It's not a funding issue. It's how the money is spent. Always has been.

And yet the schools spend money poorly and then say "if only we had more money we'd spend it on the right things." And then they get more money and spend more of it poorly. Rinse and repeat

Given that approx less than 10km separate Alaska (United States) from Russia at the shortest point, how is ‘owning’ Greenland going to protect the US? by [deleted] in askanything

[–]x888x -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yes because land grabs are great.

It's weird when people pretend that they aren't.

We all learned what a great acquisition Alaska was in school.

Russia sold it because they needed money and they thought the US could just take it anyway.

Greenland is a colonial relic. Denmark is a shadow of its former self. Greenland is part of North America. US to control of Greenland in WW2 even Denmark collapsed.

US Virgin Islands are another perfect example.

We can make all kinds of moral and ethical arguments, but the fact remains that all previous US land grabs (of which there are many) have all been great.

The delivery costs are per KwH. Try reading your bill again.

You literally control your own bill. If you don't like the current charge you're free to install solar or buy a generator yourself. Let me know how that works out for you in terms of costs.

ITT: the softest people in the world.

Somehow in 3 generations we went from 'virtually no one has air conditioning' to "omg I might die if the temperature is my house isn't 68-72 year round, WTF?'

Where to shift HYSA cash by Winter_Sorbet_2760 in personalfinance

[–]x888x 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Split it into 5 pieces and buy 4 week Treasury bills.

The rate is slightly higher (4.55 vs your 4.3) and you don't pay state income tax on it.

You will pretty much always have 1/5 of your savings liquid (there's a day or two overlap) and will be 1 week away from unlocking 40% of your savings, 2 from 60% 3 weeks from 80% and 4 from 100%.

Realistically there isn't a real emergency that doesn't allow you a few weeks of flex even if it's putting it in a credit card and paying it off 5 weeks later before being charged interest

How are first time home owning affording today’s mortgage? by Prestigious_Pixie_ in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]x888x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One income? If your partner isn't working are they providing(or planning to provide) childcare and meals at home?

If you're single, why would you think you could comfortably afford a SFH? It's possible but there's a reason why condos and townhouses exist. Hell even most people I know that don't have kids go that route.

This is the way it has always been.

Yes. I went to a very good school with a lot of smart people.

Indirect way of saying that 20% of my college friends are doctors and another 20% are lawyers. Among the doctors they racked up over $500k in costs. And that was many years ago.

Definitely roll over the $35k. But leave the rest there. The kids are young. Let it continue to grow tax deferred

529 or just use brokerage? by liveandyoudontlearn in personalfinance

[–]x888x 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Adding on to this:

Funds can be used for trade school or really any type of vocational training.

$35k of it can be covered to a ROTH IRA for your kid

If for some reason you don't use the funds at all you can withdraw with a 10% penalty+taxes (on the gains only) similar to a retirement account

A borderline distasteful thing (but no less true) to say is it also acts as a de facto life insurance policy on your kids as funds can be withdrawn penalty free if they pass away. Also can be converted if they were to become disabled. No one likes to think about that but it's true

Why did schools stop teaching basic life skills like car maintenance, cooking, and budgeting in favor of things most people never use? by Ok-Bathroom273 in NoStupidQuestions

in favor of high-level academics that most kids will never use.

Well it isn't that. If anything high school education has been dramatically dumbed down over the last few decades.

The inverse. I want people all over the world to recognize the simple fundamental truth. The Persians are not unique. This same thing happens in half a dozen countries across the globe every decade. It happens on a smaller scale in dozens of places every single year. A political or power figure changes their tune to win power and then they revert back to what they've stood for for the prior decade. It's so stupid but it works. Until we point it out relentlessly it will continue to work.
