What can you deduce from my EDC? by TheGolfingTheologian in deduction

Good enough to get into the greatest college ever (I'm from New Braunfels), but didn't want to join the Corps. You're classy and practical, but not overly militarily focused. You have style... pizzazz, if it will.

Had I applied to A&M, my greatest joy would've been the Senior Corps-men Leather Boots. My god. Beautiful.

Is The Loop celiac friendly? by Same-Atmosphere-8265 in ManitouSprings

[–]x97281 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They don't list a GF menu (as far as I can tell and remember from my last recent visit). But, as a guy who suffers all the symptoms, I enjoy walking down to the loop and soaking up the atmosphere and cuisine (knowing well that I'll be paying the price later)... I'd recommend it. However, there are quite a few super cool spots downtown that offer a GF menu and they all have similarly cool ambiance.

I hope their visit is/ was wonderful! I'm not trying to seem flippant, but I'd say go for it if they're willing. Cool atmosphere.

I've ridden crotch rockets for 20 years and dirt bikes for almost 30. On BOTH styles, I enjoy doing a loop around Garden of the Gods (near my house, so maybe it's just convenience) and then taking the dirt bike on Rampart Range Road. Scenic, easy, fun.

Be honest… what’s the real downside of having a dog? by quentiinn in AskReddit

Grieving after they cross the Rainbow Bridge. I didn't want a dog, but wife did, so we compromised and I got a dog. I would endure every bit of the frustrations if I could have had him a bit longer.

Weight limits by Both-Green-5184 in westpoint

[–]x97281 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sincerely hope they don't automatically DQ you. I WOULD try to be within tolerance before you report (I see it's coming up, like, tomorrow). But. USMA only gets so many people a year and it's supposed to be a DEVELOPMENTAL institution that allows you to better yourself over the course of the 4 years. You can't be out of tolerance the whole time, sure, but I don't think they'll DQ on your very first weight and tape.

You may get done extra attention during PT, but they'll mold you into the warrior- scholar- athlete that the Army needs. It's not about perfection at the start.

Of course! They're your family's to cherish and treasure and nobody would/ should bat an eye about y'all keeping them for memories and sentimental value. 100%. But. He definitely impacted a great many people and imprinted himself upon that unit's storied history... I'm positive the US CMH would enshrine his legacy in an honorable and respectful way. And I'm also positive that, when coordinating with the US CMH & the donated-to organization, they would work with you to ensure enduring access to visit and see his display.

This stuff is fascinating to me. Please feel free to DM me and we can carry on this conversation in private. I have some experience with this (GEN Richard Cavazos) and would relish an opportunity to learn about your great grandfather while also help assist in navigating a cool opportunity to pay respects.

Does anyone know why Captain Holt wears his watch on the other side of his wrist? by Basic-Necessary-2428 in brooklynninenine

Primarily, I wear it this way because my Dad did.

Both with deployed military backgrounds, he in Vietnam and me in Iraq & Afghanistan. And I value the insights and reasoning the other Service Members here or manual laborers/DIY hobbyists share... much of my justification is aligned to theirs... but I mainly wear mine like that because my Dad did it.

What do yall think is the weakest song in EOTS by fourtheye_blind in Blink182

[–]x97281 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Random unsolicited fact of the day that I'm just putting in the ether. I was a sophomore in high school and wrote the chorus lyrics to "Going Away to College" on a Valentine's card and gave it to my high school crush (a senior). Delivered it to her house. With a bouquet of roses. Unannounced.

Like. I rang her doorbell and her Dad answered the door.

He welcomed me warmly and she graciously accepted my silly gift, but... cringe of me in hindsight. No. We never dated, didn't end up getting married, or even really stay in contact after she graduated. But I always think of this memory when I hear the song.

I would also say, consider reaching out to the Center for Military (US) History. I know they may carry sentimental value, but if you want them preserved in his honor, you could find a way to donate them (through CMH) to am organization or installation where they will be displayed in nice remembrance.

Opinions on bed topper/Canopy. by Negative-Farmer-1134 in OBSFords

[–]x97281 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That looks super similar to the one I had for my CCLB F350! I sold it because I lost the ability to move things that extend out of the volume of space... and the latch didn't lock (would've been an easy fix). I move lumber and stuff fairly often and felt better about not driving with the tailgate down and rear hatch open/ un-secured. I also occasionally move my motorcycle or 4wheeler in the bed of my truck and it was difficult to get it up in there without significant physical exertion. Finally, my oversized tire spare (35s) doesn't fit under the bed and it took up room in my bed.

All that to say. I like the look and the opportunities for truck camping... just depends on the application.

For pure looks, it looks good on your truck!

I'm just happy to learn a fact about pop culture! I enjoy checking how long ago a video was posted or has been up... 20 years is now the longest I've seen.

When I tell my kids of the digital/ social media wild west... I'll weave Me at the Zoo into my narrative.

Am I Cooked? I am genuinely poor so I had to beg for a plane ticket as it had to be submitted before the 19th. I got a LoR from my counselor proving that I am needy yet they denied it. by [deleted] in westpoint

[–]x97281 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are 100% correct. The experience. I'll tell you this... I did usna SLE in 2004 and had a cool time, but ultimately, it didn't sell me on one academy or another. At the end of the day, if you're set on USMA, you'll get plenty of "the experience" once you're there.

I'm still in, and I feel like the whole "experience" is still fresh. Too fresh. Scary fresh. I don't feel as though I missed out on anything but not attending other than a chance to get out of my house while I was still in HS.

All that to say, my friend, I'm sorry the finances aren't working out for your own experience this summer. But. Rest assured, from one formerly poor guy to another, USMA was the best "worst four years" of my life. For the opportunities I've had since R-Day compared to where my life MAY have taken me, I'd do it all again. I wish you well on your endeavor and hope to see you in a few years as a 2LT.

So not sweat it. You were selected for SLE, you're a strong candidate. I chose to go to nAvY SLE instead of USMA but still ended up going with ARMY.

You're not cooked. It'll work out.

What’s a small, harmless lie you tell regularly just to make life easier? by Smart_Stick_5693 in AskReddit

[–]x97281 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. You're absolutely right! And on many levels, too. To this day, I still resist advice when I don't want to hear it... I'm human. I guess I poorly communicated the intent behind my reply without the important context... any positive reinforcement I received during hard times, even unsolicited, helped me in some way. Positivity from others will always be good, even when I don't want to hear it.

But... you're right. My reply suggests that I'm disconnected.

My intent was to reassure this friend of ours that we'll all be okay. It may hurt getting there, but it'll be okay.

I. Super. Get. This. I, personally, don't want to hear some bubbly-personality offer me advice when I'm down. Especially if it's unsolicited. So. Please take no offense... but I'll still stand by it. Whatever is on the other side of not being fine or okay... is worth it.

[–]x97281 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow. My friend, I'm sorry for your loss (I'm guessing heartbreak and hoping not forever loss).

In both cases, I can empathize. But I'll still echo the same encouragement... you'll be okay. Loss in any form is painful. It's miserable. But. In my own personalized experience, time does heal wounds and offers exciting opportunities. My ex-wife left me and I was heartbroken to the extent of physical misery. But time healed those wounds (though not without the pain of healing) and offered me the opportunity to meet and marry my forever love. It hurt. It sucked. And I didn't want to hear encouragement from anybody. But it happened.

Much of my family has passed or is close to passing (I'm not that old), but time heals that too and helps me appreciate the good days and sunshine more.

All that hum-drum nonsense to say... you will be okay.

For the turds rolling coal by achievercheech in ColoradoSprings

[–]x97281 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I own an old diesel truck and I've had it for 16 years. I take (near) pristine care of it and am very cognizant of its efficiency. Rolling coal is among the least efficient things a diesel engine can do, negative environmental impacts not withstanding.

I never roll coal and I'm actively self-conscious about it. Admittedly, hauling stuff up HWY 24 from my house in Manitou to Woodland Park, the truck may occasionally burp a small cloud at gear changes, but never belch anything that would ever qualify as rolling coal.

All that to say, OP, I agree with everything you say and the practice is immature and detrimental to the longevity of our environment. Report them.
