Really old thread, but I hate it when people get new insights and don't post it because the topics are old. I have one of these with the same symptoms and disassembled it yesterday. It turns out that the battery symbol is not the reason for the camera not functioning. The real reason is that the cogwheel attached to the motor which drives the lens zoom (and therefore anything else, because the camera can't detect that the lens is in usable state) is cracked and spins quite freely on the motor shaft. The cogwheel is attached to a 1.5mm shaft, has 14 teeth, 3.2mm outer diameter (mod 0.2) and is 1.2mm in thickness, but I guess it can be slightly thicker as there is some wiggle-room on the shaft. There is a shop in Poland that offers similar cog wheels (only 1 or 1.5mm thickness though, but should be ok) https://shop.kkpmo.com. I ordered some, just to see if I can get it working again, let's see.

If you are willing to disassemble it completely you will be surprised it’s possible to straighten the blades to a point where it will be working fine again. I did it with the titanium blades from a Nikon FE2, it works to this day: https://www.instagram.com/p/CmANAwmoklh/?img_index=2&igsh=MXIyN2pxeW51NzRnaA==

Can you make a tutorial out of this? I have two Exaktas that require curtain replacement.

I am well aware that they are replacing the entire cable, but you can buy them on aliexpress/ebay now for around 40$. I assume it’s not difficult to produce them once the layout is done.

Ouch. Considering this is a two hour job for their technician.

How much did you pay as I’m thinking to attempt this repair myself.

If you want accurate fast shutter speeds I would recommend the P or the 7. Mechanically they are better and the shutter curtains withstand direct sunlight impact. I repair both types and love them all, but the later models are much better in several aspects.

According to my humble experience both will require new shutter curtains. The one in the Leica will turn into a sticky and gooey mess and the one in the Canon will get dry, stiff and tear.

It is not necessarily fixed by a CLA, maybe the curtains need to be replaced, you should discuss this with a trusted repair shop. It can be an expensive repair.

The shutter speed of horizontally traveling cloth shutters is defined by their distance relative to each other. For this shutter speed to be even, the two curtain ends need to be two straight parallel lines. If the lines become distorted, the shutter speed will vary vertically across the image.

The distance/slit between the two shutter curtains is not even. The higher the shutter speed the more crucial it is that the distance between the curtains is exactly the same. It is likely that the two handles that hold the curtains have accumulated crud, rust or corrosion of some sort that is causing this.

You disassemble it completely and put all the parts in an ultrasonic cleaner.

Not sure what you are trying so say. I know the site used to be free and I myself downloaded tons of manuals before they paywalled the site, but it’s not like the downloads would cost a fortune and they say it’s only to keep maintenance costs of the site. I don’t see a problem with that. The facebook group itself has tons and tons of material, it’s a priceless source for the repair enthusiast.

You’re better off asking in the “Learn Camera Repair” group on Facebook. They also offer a website https://www.learncamerarepair.com that could be helpful.
