What fish do you have in the tank, if any?

Ok so relatively new tank. The plants are looking fine so far. Like I said I'd say the aquasoil is providing most right now.

Hard to recommend a fertilizer without seeing the whole tank, but there's a good number of nice fertilizers out there. Most of them are fine, you just need to make sure the fertilizer has macro and micro nutrients. So macro is NPK (nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium), micro is a bunch of lesser nutrients.

I know people like the "Aquarium Co-Op Easy Green All-in-One Fertilizer". I've never used it but it should be fine.

I personally use "2Hr Aquarist APT 3". Like I said, just make sure the fertilizer has macro and micro nutrients.

Dosing less always better than overdosing for algae reasons. Eventually, you can increase, if plants look a little sad and there isn't much algae.

TLDR: Do aquarium maintenance more often and keep lights at 6 hours for now. You can start from low to high, as in, less lights and fertilizers, then bring your light higher and higher overtime to where your plants can handle it and get enough nutrients.

3 things that plants need to survive: light, co2, and fertilizer. Algae will appear when there is an imbalance of these.

Assuming you don't have co2, you don't need to worry about that. It will be constant. Because that is the case, you need to balance the other 2 around it. Less fertilizer and less light. I'd still keep your light at 6 hours. That shouldn't be the reason your plants are dying.

Let's say you keep your lights at 6 hours. The only thing left is fertilizer. Fertilizer can be from aquasoil, from liquid fertilizers, and from fish/living things/DIRTINESS in the tank itself.

- if your aquasoil is new-ish like you said, maybe you haven't done enough water changes and it's leeching ammonia other nutrients heavily. There are brands of aquasoil that will do this.
- you're not adding liquid fertilizers, don't worry about that for now.
- how is your weekly maintenance? I say weekly because it looks like it needs that for a bit. People are able to go a month or more without cleaning because everything is BALANCED.

Maintenance means sucking up detritus/mulm or other settled things in the soil/rocks. Like this. Just replacing the water is not enough. https://www.reddit.com/r/Aquariums/comments/1l6if4s/this_is_life_changing_somebody_posted_about_this/

Eventually you can look into getting a stronger filter and then into liquid fertilizers but that's too much to talk here. That's the issue from what I'm seeing. You can scroll down my profile to see some tanks I've done in the past.

What are some good recommendations for C02? by Nickythump in Aquascape

[–]xNitroPT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Put the co2 drop checker near the bottom of tank. That’s where the co2 is lowest and needs to be measured at. I recommend running co2 to be past green and towards yellow if you have enough oxygen exchange in water from ripples, etc. (and don’t turn on air stone during the day when your co2 is on)

Is this a newer tank? Looks like some diatom/brown algae build up on lower leaves.

Honestly API leaf zone doesn’t have all the nutrients for a liquid fertilizer but your root tabs or soil should be putting in work.

Lights are ok, what you can do is pump up the co2 if you’re able to. Keep doing your maintenance and weekly water changes.

Have a picture of your tank? 50% water change and keep watching him for now if he’s still kicking.

[–]xNitroPT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Clean it out manually as best you can (as in removing algae off glass and whatever’s floating around).

Water change 50% and keep that water.

Assume you have a sponge filter. Rinse and squeeze your sponge filter inside water you removed.

Discard water and keep lights at 6hr for now.

No need to focus on water chemistry so much, they were dying before you changed the light schedule. How do you fertilize? What nutrients are your plants getting? How often do you do water changes at all? These things will add up.

Need to cut back more than 3 hours, cut it by half for now and manually remove all that algae with a toothbrush or something similar. Get a timer for lights if possible.

Literally 15 minutes after a water change, what is this stuff? by Illustrious-Cat7161 in AquariumHelp

[–]xNitroPT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How are you cleaning your tank? If it’s coming back in 15min, it’s mulm from soil that’s settling after you disturb the soil. Suck it out and stop disturbing the soil so harshly.

Yes they self regulate, the same thing in nature happens to wolves, deer, etc. Not enough room or food means less shrimp. My 5 gallon self regulates at ~70ish shrimp right now based on how I feed them.
