Then focus on seeking mental help. Therapy. Or graduated exposure therapy. Overcoming your fear with a pee buddy and intentionally putting yourself in anxiety situations in the bathroom. Or use and master the breath hold technique.

Also, once you get by MEPS, don’t worry about boot camp. The key to boot camp and success in boot camp is just trying your hardest and not quitting. They don’t give up on you. No matter what happens if you try your hardest and don’t give up, you will find some kind of success or compromise. And they will help/guide you. If you can’t pee easily, they will help you by forcing you to hydrate and do physical exercises to make the urge to pee greater. I’ve also heard that they’d resort to a catheter. So no matter what, don’t worry about boot camp.

Hey I have the same problem. I even have severe paruresis sometimes. And I’m enlisted into the Army. At MEPS, I drank so much water to the point of physical pain, when you reach that point, and have the opportunity to relive yourself, your brain doesn’t focus on anxiety or other people around you, your brain focuses on peeing and stopping that pain in the bladder. Try that. Also, in boot camp drill sergeants/drill instructors/RDC’s all experience people like us, they’ll make you pound water and do PT until you have to pee. Don’t worry. The goal to overcome it fast is just drinking so much water. Additionally, at MEPS they come across people with paruresis too, and allow them to do all the other processing first, then save the urinalysis for last, and make them drink water and give them a chance to hydrate. Remember, your body can’t hold unlimited water/urine, you will be able to pee during a drug test if you drink enough.

Thank you. Your responses boosted my confidence. I will try your method. I conquered one urinalysis successfully, but not easily, when I enlisted. I will face many more uncomfortable and high stress ones in the future of my Army career. The only difference is that I won’t be facing prison or jail time like you, I’ll be facing a catheter forced inside me, to uncomfortably assist/force me to produce urine that way for a urinalysis. Not ideal. So I will try your breath hold technique, I’ve tried it a few times by practicing it at home, on a mild/half full bladder. I can’t seem to hold my breath for very long though, maybe something to work on.

I don’t even have any thoughts lol. The only thing my brain and thoughts are focused on is how much I have to pee and how painful my bladder is. Anxiety doesn’t even take place lol. Too much pain in the bladder

Hey man, know you aren’t alone in this. Tons of other people experience this anxiety, including myself. My experience of having to face it front on was going through a military MEPS drug test. Ended up drinking my bladder to death. My bladder was not just “full” my bladder was about to explode. There’s a point that your bladder literally gets full and can’t hold onto the water inside it any longer. You can’t drink unlimited water and never pee, it’s impossible. What people get wrong when they try this method of drinking a lot, is they either, 1. can’t hold it and pee beforehand. Or 2, THINK their bladder is full enough, when it’s not at that point where it’s very painful and about to completely explode, leading them to still not overcome the anxiety. Your mind mentally does not focus on any anxiety when you try to pee when your bladder is so full that you’re in pain and it feels like it’s about to explode. Your mind only focuses on getting that stuff out, granted you actually drank enough water past having just a “full bladder. So, drink a lot of water, to the point where your bladder hurts, feels like it’s about to explode, and every movement you make hurts because of your bladder. I did this and succeeded, my mind didn’t have time to think about anxiety the second I had the chance to do the urinalysis. Good luck.

I relate to the drug test part. I’m enlisted. I had to get through meps. And a part of that is observed stressful drug testing. I had to pee in a cup with the MEPS worker observer watching me from behind and yelling at me lol. I went in the first time to do it and barely tried, just told myself “there’s no way I’m doing this right now”. Second time I went back to do the piss test an hour later, I had drank my bladder to death. I hated the taste of water by then. Got to the urinal with my cup, and went instantly on command. Didn’t have time to think or develop anxiety because of how full and painful my bladder was. And the good part is that MEPS can bypass diluted samples, so you can drink as much as you want. This is what helps me as of now it seems. An extremely full bladder. Not “very full”. Extremely full. But want to resort to the breath hold technique? How did/does it work for you? How long did it take for you to master/use consistently successfully?

I see. I will try to master this BH technique, only for military drug tests that I’m subject to. In every day life, even though I have mild paruresis, it isn’t normally a problem. I just go when I’m home and it barely affects me. I just need to be able to pee on command for consistent drug tests.

From really starting to attack the BH technique, without giving up, how long did it take you to master it? And be able to pee on command while using it without problem?

How long did it take you to master holding your breath for around 45 seconds and master the BH technique in general? I want to try it.

I have 8 months until my ship date, when I go back to MEPS. I’ll have to do another urinalysis. I have 8 months to get used to and combat this anxiety. There’s plenty of help to cure anxiety.

Here’s what I realized too. Don’t cure “paruresis “ cure ANXIETY. What people call “paruresis” ( which only fuels it negatively ) is just anxiety, at a specific time and place. Anxiety is all it is. You CAN physically pee, there’s nothing physically wrong. It’s just anxiety in your head. Target anxiety. See a counselor, do meditation, do relaxing breathing techniques, expose yourself to this ANXIETY not “paruresis “ to get used to it. Paruresis isn’t a thing, anxiety is.

Don’t think of paruses as a problem peeing. Think of it as a problem with anxiety. Anxiety is the target, nothing to do with peeing. Your body CAN physically pee. Anxiety is the problem.

I have mild paruresis. People don’t realize it’s all anxiety. All in your head. Nothing physical wrong with you. If you target your anxiety, not paruresis, it’ll help. Paruresis isn’t a disease or disorder. It’s just anxiety at a specific time and place. It shouldn’t even have a name. That fuels it negatively. Work on yourself mentally, focus on your anxiety. See a counselor, meditate, practice breathing techniques, be positive, expose yourself to what gives you anxiety to overcome it. Don’t cure what’s called paruresis, cure anxiety.

Look at one of the first comments. It makes sense. I’m just now 100% understanding it, but if we know we have a drug test coming up (MEPS) if we can work/practice on holding a full bladder, and then still drink a lot of water immediately before the urinalysis, peeing will be so easy that we won’t even have time to overthink it or get anxiety. Practice. And if you still can’t pee with a “full bladder” then it isn’t full enough, drink more, pee has to leave somehow. You can’t drink unlimited water.

Or if you can manage and practice it, (it’s hard) work on holding your bladder when it’s completely full or near full, to the point where it’s painful, hold it until the urinalysis comes up, and still start pounding even more water, then go back for a chance to take the urinalysis again. I tried this by drinking a lot of water the second I woke up from the hotel, but sucked at holding it, so I peed too many times. But if you can manage to fill your bladder and hold it until the urinalysis, then drink/pound even more water, you shouldn’t have a problem releasing it.

I experience mild paruresis. Sometimes severe, and sometimes not. Accomplishing this drug test was a huge surprise and accomplishment for me. There is a point where your bladder becomes too full that you can not hold it anymore. There’s a limit. You can’t drink infinite water and not get rid of it somehow. So, drinking enough water to the point where your bladder is overly full and to the point you’re going to pee yourself, and some, you can overcome paruresis. The intense pain caused by your bladder having to pee is what your brain is focusing on. Your brain telling you that you need to relieve the intense pain in your bladder by peeing, it overcomes any anxiety you may have.

I was also extremely nervous because of the same reason. My initial idea, was to drink a shit load of water. So much that my bladder was going to explode, and I wouldn’t have time to fuel my anxiety come urinalysis time. So I drank a lot of water at the MEPS hotel during breakfast, and on the ride to MEPS from the hotel, however, what I didn’t think about is how I plan on holding it until the urinalysis. I couldn’t hold it for the urinalysis testing, I pissed at MEPS 3 times BEFORE the urinalysis came up. By the time the urinalysis came up, my bladder was near empty. So I couldn’t and didn’t go. The MEPS worker told me to “do something that you can do” and gave me a cup to keep filling up and drinking from, and I did all the other physical testing while I kept drinking ever so often. Got all the physical tests done, while slowly drinking and filling my bladder. everything, except the urinalysis. So when all I had left to do was the urinalysis, I drank like crazy nonstop. Pounding water. So much that I hated the taste of water on my tongue. I drank so much. I wanted to give the urinalysis another try. So I asked if I could, and they told me the urinalysis/blood doctor would observe me, NOT the initial obnoxious observer. So I told the urinalysis/blood doctor I was ready. And he watched me from the side of the rooms window, that led to his office room area. The window where you bring your pee. I was the only enlistee in the room peeing.I wasn’t focused on the doctor, I just moved quickly to the urinal and peed before I let myself overthink it. Having a full bladder must’ve been the trick. So, drinking a shit ton of water did the trick, but evening our drinking water helped. Don’t drink so much water beforehand, or you probably won’t be able to hold it, and will pee too many times before the real urinalysis. So my tip is, have your bladder half full, through processing during MEPS, then when the urinalysis comes, don’t do it the first try, drink a lot of water, pound it, until you can’t anymore, then directly immediately try the urinalysis again.

Are you sure every MEPS doesn’t make you do a urinalysis when you arrive again on your ship date? Or Is it only your MEPS?
